@PhantomPhreak

Hello, when I saw your XCP,I was surprised to find that it's characterized is very similar to my previous thoughts.
This is my  postings at December 26.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=385739.msg4154105#msg4154105
Maybe a coincidence?
should be coincidence .
Yes, proof of burn was proposed long before last December. The value of this project is not just the proof by burn, but also the workable exchange and open source.

At least 2012, if not before: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=131139.0

Side note: note the number of hero members with high activity discussing the topic.

In particular XCP was inspired by Sergio's proposal of a PoBet scheme. (Phantom, xnova, can you confirm?) Actually it's quite different, NVM.

However, the prospect of greed has left PoB implementations to take a back seat to more ... ahem traditional methods of funding.

Unlike traditional banking where clients have only a few account numbers, with Bitcoin people can create an unlimited number of accounts (addresses). This can be used to easily track payments, and it improves anonymity.

We don't know whether it was a coincidence.I am considering the issue of copyright.
Search "proof by burn" and you will see if it has a copyright, it does not belong to you.

Btw what became bitcoins sent for mastercoin funding ?
All in the pocket of the dev. Including what they sent to themselves to get MSC share.
Oh, + 10% of all MSC created on top of that as "devMSC" to fund development and bounties I guess.
(like the previous 100% wasn't enough...)
And there is a rumour: a part of every single MSC transaction is going to the exodus address (to the dev pocket, again). I haven't verified this 3rd statement.
The first two are way enough to keep me at good distance.

And what do I read: copyright O.o?
Are you serious guys?
Like someone is gonna respect it...

mastercoin also claims to have a distributed exchange.
Has anyone here used it?   How is it similar / different to the exchange in counteryparty?
No idea.
Last time I checked it was pure vaporware, words.
XCP seem to be the first one with something other than words.

Each MSC transaction will send a dust of BTC (usually around 0.00006) to exodus address as the flag of MSC transaction, plus 0.00006 to an unspendable address(encoding all the information) and 0.00006 to the recipient address.

It's pretty obvious from a cursory glance that the devs have at least 4 BTC invested in this project, if not more. Also, they do have a donation address if you feel inclined to contribute to bounties...

If I had to take a guess, I would say more like close to at least 20 BTC invested  Wink

It's a total guess, but by observation of the first burning I arrived at:
2 people burned 25 BTC each
many burned over 5 BTC
one may have burn between 30 & 45 BTC.
After that I stopped watching.

I would not be surprised if during the whole month devs burned 50 BTC.
Unfortunately I am very far from owning that much money Grin

A mastercoin development update was released today.   It sounds like a distributed exchange is not ready yet, but is is in the works.

http://blog.mastercoin.org/2014/01/10/master-protocol-%E2%86%92-mastercoin-development-update-2/

Also I saw in another thread that there is a bounty for distributed exchange, and that good progress has been made.

So it seems that counterparty could still be first with a workable implementation, though that will depend on when bitcoin 0.9 is released.

I dunno what is going on with NXT in that regard, if anything.  anyone?

Well I take it as a very good sign that the devs believe in it that much.

It's a total guess, but by observation of the first burning I arrived at:

So, provided that the counterpartyd.conf has changed to include:

bitcoind-rpc-connect=
bitcoind-rpc-port=
bitcoind-rpc-user=
bitcoind-rpc-password=
rpc-user=
rpc-password=

instead of

rpc-connect=
rpc-port=
rpc-user=
rpc-password=

Should I download any new installer for windows? Or do something manually?

So, ubuntu 13.10 I did that to update yet another time:
Code:
cd ~/counterpartyd_build
git pull origin master
cd ~/counterpartyd_build/dist/counterpartyd
git pull origin master
But now it isn't working anymore...
Code:
counterpartyd --log-file=-
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/home/user/counterpartyd_build/dist/counterpartyd/counterpartyd.py", line 22, in <module>
from lib import (config, api, util, exceptions, bitcoin, blocks)
  File "/home/user/counterpartyd_build/dist/counterpartyd/lib/api.py", line 7, in <module>
    from werkzeug.wrappers import Request, Response
ImportError: No module named 'werkzeug'
I haven't change my counterpartyd.conf yet
Still looking like this:
Code:
[Default]
rpc-user=goodusername
rpc-password=goodpassword
rpc-connect=localhost
rpc-port=8332
#rpc-port=18832   #this is for testnest, for main net 8832 on both xcp & btc.conf

Should I edit it with the following?
Code:
[Default]
bitcoind-rpc-user=goodusernamesamebitcoin.conf
bitcoind-rpc-password=goodpasswordsamebitcoin.conf
bitcoind-rpc-connect=localhost
bitcoind-rpc-port=8332
#bitcoind-rpc-port=18832   #this is for testnest, for main net 8832 on both xcp & btc.conf
rpc-user=differentusername-only4xcp
rpc-password=differentpassword-only4xcp

edit:
I eddited my counterpartyd.conf with what's up.
Still the same problem. Nothing working.
Oh and shouldn't
Code:
counterpartyd --log-file=-
be
Code:
counterpartyd --log-file='/home/user/.config/counterpartyd/counterpartyd.log'
? so at least the log is kept somewhere...

How are you guys correlating that these payments come from the same individuals?

How are you guys correlating that these payments come from the same individuals?
You can spend time with https://blockchain.info/en/taint/1CounterpartyXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXUWLpVr if you want something certain.
Such as 16pefymTqo7dfMB7uHX8naco7JbptGoqDL burned at least 9 BTC, that is 100% sure.

Or if you see in the very beginning many same amount burned in a very quick time, all in the same block or (2~3 block max), then you can guess that x might have burned at least y.
As I made it clear: it's a guess.
I don't have time to lose to precisely check who burned how much.

'still waiting help for the updated software error.

hmm i should have been more clear in that update I guess.

you can do dist ex right now, but it is being limited to test mastercoins until a couple consensus issues get resolved. here is one implementation, as you can see their are transactions on mainnet http://mastercoin-explorer.com/order_books

having looked through the xcp code to me it seems the main difference is that the xcp dev (btw you code is very clear and well commented, easy to read for a noncoder like me) is using what mastercoin calls class c op_return transactions, and mastercoin does class a and class b as well, since when it was initially funded way before the pull request that led to op_return being included in 0.9.  in  that case the xcp code is a bit more rigid, but it allows faster development of a lot of the features in the mastercoin spec.

obviously everything is open source, so folks can borrow from one another and probably do.

You need to run bitcoind with the command-line option -reindex the first time.

After you pulled the new update from git, did you rerun setup.py??
(rerunning setup.py will rebuild your virtualenv, with the werkzeug package)

Thanks, that seem to have resolved the situation.
Weird, my mind stopped reading the doc halfway.
Probably because on first-update-this-way I didn't rerun setup.py and yet saw change.

This trouble made me stop from burning more.
Which is probably a good thing after all.

I have added a basic chart to http://blockscan.com .. From what I can see we are averaging approx. 80 BTC burns for the last 6 days. If this trend does indeed continue then we will definitely see more than 1000 BTC burned

cheers
