Are there any good moderated forums for bitcoin that people can recommend?  I don't really like the thought of someone having that kind of control over forum postings, but this forum has degenerated to the point where I think such a forum is an unfortunate necessity.  And, btw, this kind of thing is not unique to bitcoin.  Almost every community that achieves some degree of popularity has to take such steps at some point.  I would also recommend shutting this forum down (an action that I think, while unfortunate, is probably in the best interest of bitcoin).

Have you thought of just using the ignore function. Not sure how it works, but whether you can ignore a whole thread or a particular user, that would work nicely. It would be sad to see you guys leave, you're among those doing really good work for Bitcoin.

Have you thought of just using the ignore function.

The ignore function is somewhat useful.

However, the best solution I've seen is a voting system (like Reddit), where trolls get down-voted and effectively ignored. For those who are interested, I'd recommend you check the Bitcoin section on Reddit. Over 5,000 users and growing strong.

The more Bitcoin supporters on Reddit, the more publicity Bitcoin will receive (by hitting the front page etc).

I don't need tools to ignore certain people or threads, I just do.  I just want a place where I can engage in serious discussion about bitcoin without having to wade through pages and pages of people's personal quarrels and other nonsense.  I also want a forum where people new to bitcoin can land and not be completely turned off by such nonsense.  I suggested shutting down this forum not because I'm against having unmoderated forums, but because this is the oldest and hence most popular bitcoin forum.  And in my opinion this forum is no longer deserving of being the place where people are first introduced to bitcoin discussion topics.  I'm sure another unmoderated forum will be started in short order and it can stand on its own merits.

I think free speech goes hand-in-hand with the Bitcoin philosophy and places like Reddit turn into circle-jerks where only the popular opinions ever get seen and anyone expressing a contrary opinion is effectively silenced via downvotes.

Apparently freedom is a great concept until it becomes a minor inconvenience, right?

I can relate completely with what you're saying, Steve, but it might be a case of an unmoveable object against an unstoppable force. Shutting down this forum is probably unrealistic. If it was shut down, that would be the proof the anti-Bitcoin camp needs to say "told you so, Bitcoin is doomed". The best possible scenario would be for the community itself to mature to the point where these issues are a non starter.

If another forum is opened (check out the one Vladimir was talking about, for example) as long as it quickly rises in the search engines, it could then become the place where the uninitiated land, and this forum would slowly descend into obscurity. That might be a good thing.

There is plenty of free market demand for well moderated forums.  Freedom of speech is not an obligation for others to listen.

Try that : https://www.mturk.com
For 0.25BTC / 100 posts, I am sure you can find a bunch of people how will accept to post on your forum.
You can even ask them to write only bootlicking posts, and ban them at will (just tell them that's part of the job so that they don't take it personally).
Enjoy!

I could not pass it by and not shamelessly plug this:

https://bitcoin.org.uk/ is a up and coming collaboration platform for everything related to "block chain and proof of work" technologies,  naturally including Bitcoin.

We are on the first page for google's "bitcoin forums" already and moving up. What's more important is that my goal here is to get a business friendly board going and it will be moderated. It is also a full featured advanced forum platform already and more improvements and clean up is being worked on.

For example, you could get your own subforum(s) here (PM me) and be able to moderate your subforums as you see fit. There are also plans to come up with while label setup eventually and possibly even with openAuth/openID API to enable even deeper integration with participating businesses. We already support twitter auth. You can see, for example, how MMC pool is using it at the moment at https://bitcoin.org.uk/mmc and https://mining.mainframe.nl/forum .

Kind Regards,
Vladimir.

I would say this is probably you're best option, Vlad has been here since very early on and is very professional.

(and mine if I ever catch you at TF).

You know a forum has some serious iron-fisted moderation when they ban you before you even register.

Until a moderator comes along that doesn't like your particular point of view and uses the banhammer to silence your voice.

Yes, yes, the market will correct itself eventually, but why go through that in the first place? It just seems like people here don't like to see anything that is contrary to their worldview. The Bruce situation is wrong with the accusation of pedophilia, but it is very justified in questioning his decision making and heavy handedness when it comes to the location he chose.
