Even disregarding any potentially crackpot people talking to aliens to warn us,  I believe it is possible that our sun is actually not the only star in our solar system.  In fact single-star systems are the rarity in the universe.  It is possible that there is a dwarf star orbiting our sun (or, they orbit each other actually).    It only comes around every X thousand years, which happen to coincide with massive historic cataclysmic changes on Earth.
