I personally feel that religious topics should be in the politics & society section... for many people, religion is the basis for society

Religion causes many of the problems with politics & society

Religion is extremely relevant to this section

I would generally agree with these statements however I wouldn't cast it as an absolute.  I would rather look at it on a scale.  Some religious topics do not belong in this section IMO.  for example your thread that you PM'd me about was not about political implications it was an opinion poll for what is the best religion.  I did not see a lot of value in the thread being in this board, my options are delete, lock or move it.  I chose the one that didn't censor the topic, feel free to continue to discuss it!

If you think differently, then create a religious subforum and move ALL the religious topics to the same place...

That's not how it works dude, I don't get to create boards, I work within the system provided.  If either of us don't like it we can complain, deal with it or leave.

It appears that way because it is and the arbitrary decision is left to me.  Again not all religious topics belong in this section IMO. I don't look at this subject in terms of absolutes.  The rules are subjective I did not receive instructions on what and how to specifically mod the section.  I apply the rules the best I can based on my interpretation of the rules.  If you believe I am not interpreting the correctly after we talk about it feel free to take it to meta!

It is funny you say half the religious topics have been moved to OT.  In reality I have moved dozens of threads in the last couple of weeks and I believe 1 of them was a religion opinion poll.  In fairness it may have been a couple of religious threads moved but they were shit topics I probably should have shit canned instead of moving but meh, point being it isn't anywhere near half.

It is also worth noting that as I mentioned I feel I have been extra lenient on the religious subjects.  I won't be moving every thread on this subject to OT it does as mentioned have a lot of society and political implications, but I also don't think I will leave all them anymore and will be making decisions on what to leave and what to move.

How exactly do you decide that a thread called "Evolution is a hoax" where some idiot just argues nonsense about why he's religious and hates evolution... is more relevant to this section than a poll about religious beliefs... one has to do with politics and society (my poll about religious beliefs is society), and the other is 100% off topic (Evolution is a hoax)

Hello FH, first time talking to you so first thanks for your work on the forum.

I've spent a quite long time in P&S cause that's what I love. But I've ran away and I don't think I'm the only one.

I know you talk about lengthy posts here, but I think it's a bit as talking about a last stage cancer and saying "ok we need to do something about your nosebleed". The nosebleed is a problem but that's definitely not the main problem, it's just a consequence.

Deleting posts CANT be a long term solution. Apart from the huge amount of work for you it justs doesn't affect the rats swarming this place.

I think everyone will agree on the fact that a few people are responsible for maybe 80% of this section pollution and that's why I left. Getting different opinions and sometimes... Bizarre personalities and theories is perfectly fine, especially on this section. For example I don't think there is even one thing in common between my opinions/vision of the world and the one of Spendulus. We disagree on pretty much everything and sometimes the arguments were a bit... hot but never utterly stupid or repetitive.

Problems come with people who are not here to discuss but to vomit their agenda. Do I have to give the names of BADEcker or popcorn1?

And honestly when you get Spendulus, Techshare, Pocorn1 and Badecker on your thread (like this one https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4666163.0 )... Man you gotta be motivated to even continue the discussion...

It's not a question of political agenda, it's just a question of keeping the debate open. It's not possible when you encounter 4 or 5 aggressive trasher at the same time. It just makes people trying to discuss go away. Though I don't have a solution...

Welcome back to the board!  I hope you will feel like joining back in some of the debates going on!

You raise a number of concerns and I agree it can be a challenging environment at times!

In simple terms theymos' vision for the forum is to be "as free as possible".  This philosophy allows all of us to spew our shit on the pages!  What comes along with being allowed to spew any old shit we want, we also have to deal with others spewing any old shit they want.

I assume that this freedom draws in more of the extreme fringes of society as they can say many things here they can't most other places.  Having any kind of engaging audience just gives them more reason to be here!

I agree certain users are here to push an agenda no matter what.  Along with giving us all the ability to spew shit because of theymos' vision he also gave us a couple of tools to use to combat those we feel are not worth our time.  Putting a user on ignore is one such tool and will allow you a bit of freedom from any user you choose!  The other option is to start self moderated threads, this allows you to delete any post you want, for any reason!

I don't personally have anyone on ignore, it's kinda hard to moderate if you can't read posts hehe.  I do have a couple of self mod'd threads and I encourage debate but there are a couple of users that are not welcome in the thread no matter what they write.

I hope this helps and you will join in the debates again!

Problem for me is that when going into political debate, if you manage to do something a bit constructive, that should more or less look like a battle of arguments. Each argument being potentially supported or challenged by others... Each of those others by again others...

Like for example on the thread I oppened on the subject of banlifting of weapons possession in Europe, someone answered about the 3d printing of weapons and someone about the American constitution. Each of those arguments could lead to international copyright or internet censorship or electoral systems... While still being LINKED to the topic but by a far far faaaaaaaaaaaaaar extend.

So is off-topic something even possible on the P&S board? Is it something you should report?

It would be a welcome new rule if it is one.  Normally 'self-moderation' is used by people who have an agenda of some sort and who want to control others so that they don't interfere with the hidden planning and scheming.

More and more people are shocked and chagrined that they cannot just present a particular viewpoint or 'fact' and not have it go unchallenged.  'self-moderation' is the most obvious solution to this 'problem'.

Generally speaking, someone who wants to self-moderate is better off with their own web-site.  Hijacking someone elses' more popular platform and taking full control of a little piece of it (e.g., 'your' thread) is kind of pathetic.

I’m curious if you mean in terms of just this sub or btalk as a whole. Theymos and that Flying Hellfish fellow know what they’re doing in that regard I can assure you. I also can assure you Self Mod topics can be extremely necessary in some boards ( collectibles and general discussion for example ). Some posts aren’t meant for the masses / opinions  ( or more likely sig spamming aimlessly off topic ).   This board is more for open dialogue/opinion than many others, rendering it less needed. IMHO anyhow.
