I can still post in the newbie section, I did a test.  "Post new poll" is still clickable for me.  (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=424639.0)

Is that supposed to happen?

You can still reply to threads in there, but you cant make new ones, but you can seemingly post a poll, but not sure if that's meant to be allowed or not.

I like the proxy changes and removal of the newbie restrictions but I don't see why the newbie section had to be archived.  It was a great starting place and I frequently went there trying to help new users out.  What issues would leaving it cause?

Your board, your rules.  Good Luck!

Just so you know I'm a newbie who just created an account about 12 hours ago. Initially I couldn't post to anywhere which was confusing since the instructions said I should be able to post in the newbie forum and then browse for 4 hours to get wider access. So I looked around and came across this post and thought I might have been caught in the proxy filter even though I was browsing from a fairly standard ISP in Australia. But there was nothing on any page indicating this and I couldn't find anything about how/where to pay the 'small fee' anyway. Maybe I was caught up in the changeover and now the documentation matches with what happens. Anyway it seems like now I can post (at least to 'Meta').

I must to say that I like the idea of a small payment to avoid spammers. I have a quite a few ideas along these lines that I'd like to be able to implement.

I think it should be unarchived but no restrictions like now. Simply to keep newbie questions from filling up general and let them meet each other.

I agree. The newbies section is good to avoid the same question being asked over and over again on other boards.

Awwwww, I was looking to become a senior member in the next couple of days Wink. Guess I'll have to wait, it's for our own good.

The signature campaign posters adding useless redundant fluff to their posts to reach their minimum word count are lowering my IQ.

This is an interesting change only time will tell if it works but I guess tentatively I am alright with the changes
Newbie hell feels so long ago but the remnants of that time in purgatory will now be a thing of the past  Cheesy
Geh now I feel old

I just hope the mining sections don't get flooded with newbies asking really simple questions and not bothering to do much intel into how to get started up, but that's the only real cost I see of the new system. The old system kind of force learned you to a certain level of proficiency before you could graduate to the normal levels. Filtering out the idiots and establishing a base level of knowledge in the system since you couldn't do much for four hours but read and learn.

That said I agree with bitpops suggestion as I see no harm in having newbies greeting one another and general questions being asked, that said absent the newbies section a patrol page to observe those type of posts from new accounts is useful for moderation, and acts as a semi-filter.

I think it should be unarchived but no restrictions like now. Simply to keep newbie questions from filling up general and let them meet each other.

Yes, the newbie section was a good thing.
I would hunt for easy questions with no reply and help the newbies.
