give it a try but most motherboards expect a power draw from the pci card.  that being said its not a problem if you only have 2 or 3 cards.  Its when you are stacking 4 or more cards per motherboard and then it could take months before a riser cable fries or worse your motherboard.  I run 5 GPUs per board.  I use 3 powered risers and 2 unpowered.  Never had problems after that.

Powered risers replace the 75w that is normally present with the pcie lane physical connection.

In other words, if you don't use powered risers, you will be overspeccing your 6/8 pin gpu connectors.

Always play safe.  Miners don't let other miners use non-powered risers.

Power raisers are ONLY needed if your running on a slot outside of a pcie x16 slot. They already provide power though the raiser for the card... your fine with a unrpowered raiser.

You need POWERED raisers when you go to a slot outside of the pcie x16 slot because then you need to supplement the normal wattage your card would draw from the slot and the slots outside if the pcie x16 do not support the amount of power the card needs though the slot.

You'll need powered risers if you're using the gpu in a 1x slot or three or more graphics cards. Typically this goes hand and hand.

Agreed, you do NOT need powered risers  on a x16 slot. I have 0 powered risers, no problems at all on any of my 280x or 7950 cards.
