Many people has missed Bitcoin boat. Is bitcoin the end of the world ? I don't think so...
I believe in the near future there will be atleast 4 to 5 alternate currencies that will come close to the Bitcoin. So let's not miss these new boats !!

I am not an Economist. Following are speculations based on the info I gathered from different tech sources. This is an on going effort and I will be revising this list based on my findings. Ethereum is not a cloned alt coin, its a platform to create new decentralized services (Bitcoin 2.0). You can call it as an amalgamation of Mastercoin, Open Transactions, Namecoin etc..  It helps in creating DAC (Decentralized Autonomous Corporations) called Contracts which you can code using C like language using BlockChain technology. Virtual coins value are reflective of what anyone is ready to pay for them. And to pay for something it needs to add value. If it doesn't then its a simply btc clone and the question needs to be asked - Is the coin good enough to usurp btc? If not, then its not going anywhere. This actually filters most of the current coins and future coins too. Even LTC, though some like to call it silver compared to gold of btc. It certainly is not going anywhere.

Out of the two suggestions Ethereum is a good contender. So, is mastercoin and PTS.

Though the next big thing will probably be, zerocoin with its anonymity raised to another level.

Guys, mastercoin is not a alt coin it's a protocol layer on top of bitcoin. 

But yes, mastercoin  can do alot of thing and it's a great protocol. and  can  be  used to  do  many different  things. Its future is bright.

the focus is going to be on btc and with mbtc coming into picture, if the wallets re-assign the decimal accordingly 1BTC = $900 as the gold standard, 1mBTC = $0.9 the silver standard. Media is too focused on btc and Satoshi. So not even sure where the irrational exuberance for LTC will even be born out of. On top of it, people are calling it silver compared to btc's gold itself is going to stop it from achieving the next big thing's tag.

The underlining factor on incorporation is "may". Not every coin/DAC being born out of btc fork is supposed to be incorporated in btc in the future. Mastercoin maybe, but ethereum or protoshare or zerocoin or even levelcoins too? Nope, not all of them are going to be incorporated.

Again IMO, if looking for the next big thing, look for something which adds value. If you find a coin which just acts as a value store like most of the coins out now,  then you already have BTC. No point in looking for others.

Niceness. This is like CNC reaching 1 BTC each before dropping like a stone.

The properties of a coin are valuable to the tiny tech community that can read into it. The rest of it is in the marketing and assurances behind the coin.
Of course active community and active development are a must.
