There's something about this Lawsky guy, but I can't quite put my figure on it. It seems as if he's been appointed to speak for some other entity due to his voicing on the subject being carefully phrased. And I'm not just talking about him being personally carefully choosing the words.

Basically he is saying -- Bitcoin, we can't stop it and now we are trying to figure out how to control and tax it!

Summary?

Basically, they are going to try to adapt Bitcoin into the "system." They don't know how they are going to do it. They will have to rewrite all the banking and money laws from scratch.

Doesn't sound like good news to me. The good news would be to repeal all the laws. Why? Because any laws can be applied against anybody, even the lawmakers. And they take away freedom.

The only thing that should be in place is, laws as warnings and instructions and guides. ALL litigation should be based on harm and damage done by someone against someone else, not on laws.

As for Bitcoin, the good news is that they aren't going to try to shut it down directly.

Actually, it is government agencies who are developing conversion aspects of Bitcoin. Right now the CIA, NSA and FBI, along with their counterparts in governments around the world, are developing methods to readily convert bitcoins back and forth between the world currencies. You've heard of government slush fund accounts. What better way for gov agencies to finance slush fund accounts than through Tor and Bitcoin Fog-like conversion houses that you and I know nothing about?

Like the Internet was made practical so that the military could use it, and like Tor was and is backed by the navy, and like we all use the Internet and many of us use Tor, we will be able to use the worldwide, Bitcoin exchange houses that the espionage agencies are setting up around the world.

Good, bad or indifferent, Bitcoin is here to stay.

“My hope is that Bitcoin is very much at a tipping point and is moving from an earlier phase when it was dominated by some individuals who were more interested in the illicit nature of it, and what they could hide from people, and moving into a phase where it is more mainstream and will start to realise a lot of the benefits of digital currency,” he said.

“We are not going to dilly-dally,” Mr Lawsky told the FT. “Our hope is to move relatively quickly so we can give some certainty to businesses. My experience has been that businesses can deal with regulation. What they can’t deal with is uncertainty.”

Businesses can deal with regulation*, by shutting down. Nothing more certain than that.

I agree, but he seemed more open to the progression of bitcoin than I initially expected...

Don't know others situations but Youtube is blocked in quite a few countries in the world.  Not everyone has the luxury of an open internet Sad....infact the country with the most internet users in the world have heavily censored internet.  Enjoy the luxuries of not having to pay for a VPN to view things like youtube, it's a luxury many people take for granted.

And the good thing about bitcoin is that you can still use it in those countries Wink

It's only a paywall if you have to pay. Stop being lazy and just register. It's worth it because there will be lots and lots of very important articles, interviews, videos and whatnot posted on the FT in the years to come.
