I have $1700 to invest in alts and have been doing a lot of my own research. I was interested in getting some of your opinions on what would make up a nice balanced portfolio. I am not talking about an omg so much doge type portfolio but a genuine medium risk medium term balanced portfolio of alt coins. Would be great to hear some of your ideas.

bitcoin, litecoin, nxt, protoshares, peercoin, mastercoin, eTherium. Litecoin because MAYBE there is room in the market for 1 shitcoin, then the rest because those are all of the ones that are actually innovative.

Thanks for the idea on the mining rig! I didn't think I could make a roi from mining though after electricity costs ect though?
With the introduction of ASIC miners this year wouldn't this be a bad idea though? can the new ASIC miners mine script coins ect? Sorry if these a stupid questions I just never opened up the idea of buying a mining rig instead of investing..

give me a marketable copy coin anyday, innovatives mainly for a very niche crowd, ltc just being the silver to btc gold will take it way further then most the 'innovative' coins as the public becomes more interested in alternative currencies.

You'll be fine. In a month or two you will see where the profit lies. As for ASICs, well, you still have eight months. You will fail first couple of times if you decide to build a rig, but eventually you will make some money. When you do make some money, you will start to seriously consider mid-/long- term investing. If you are capable to make some money in this jungle, you will bust your ass trying to keep it or make some more. You'll learn, like anyone else here. That's the best way. Better than ask for an advice from day traders.

Base of the possible growth and the cost of maintenance. I would go with Quark as it will most likely be your safest investment.

Wouldn't Zerocoin be at risk at getting totally banned in the US. From the last New York hearings they seemed to keep stressing how they hate fully anonymous coins and tumblers, but gave bitcoin benefit of the doubt because of the public ledger..

Hobonickels or P-Stones. It shouldn't represent 100% of your holding but these two coins can provide healthy returns through PoS mining. Check out my Hobonickel Invesement Journal to learn more. Link is in my sig.

I'm a NXTer so I admit bias, but if you want something that is sustainable and still hasn't fully launched yet in terms of value: NXT NXT is almost guaranteed to double up A LOT of times more. The main features and a userfriendly client hasn't even launched yet. Just now are the media picking up attention for it. So if I were you I'd put it all in NXT.
If however you are just looking to play lotto and hope to hit the random altcoin that will be pumped and dumped next: I'd rather invest it in poker. At least in poker you have quite a lot of influence if you know math.
