Hi everyone, I thought long and hard about posting this as i am pretty new around here don't want to really be talking about the dreaded M (M*rit) word, or making myself look like a tw@t  Roll Eyes

However, I think its especially important that i get this out the right now while i am still currently a NEWBIE, and in my humble opinion i think that fellow newbies could take note of what I am saying. Apologies if this post is lengthy but stick with it as i promise it will help if you are struggling at first.

So firstly, I'd like to mention that I joined here in mid May and I've only been on here posting for around 1 week. I'm nobody special, just an average guy who has a young family and a strong interest in crypto/BTC. I have never been here previously and i do not KNOW anyone here in person, there is no bias toward you, me, or any other newbie in this forum. The problem we have here regarding 'Merit' seems to focus around it being perceived as unfair and/or impossible to achieve...

Well i am here to tell you that YOU ARE WRONG!

Weeks before i posted anything at all, i was on here looking looking through threads, looking at the topics that popped up time after time, looking and learning from the content, looking at the people who are posting the good stuff, looking to see if i could fit in and make a difference and/or help others!

Why is the merit system here?

Well its simple really, and it boils down to one word- QUALITYor rather the lack of it!
On one of my first ever posts I had a member (Jetcash) comment asking if i [as a newbie] could give my opinion on the merit system. I'll be honest, i was confused at first and then i read it again twice more-it made sense. Some of the guys who give merit here have been here a looooong time! Surely they don't want any Tom, dick or Muhammad (to be politically correct  Wink ) coming here posting trash and undoing all of the hard work that they have put in to build this place up and make it the absolute treasure trove of information that it is. Simply put- these guys are the owners and we are the visitors! Why should they dish out merit willy-nilly to someone who has brought nothing to the table? Only fair really isn't it?

So now we understand why the merit system is here right?

What can YOU do to gain some Merit for yourself?

1.CONTRIBUTE! Bitcoin and Crypto has to be one of- if not the most- discussed topic(s) on the entire internet. There is such a VAST amount of information out there, that you simply CANNOT FAIL to find something that hasn't been discussed in great depth, or maybe find a different angle to discuss a popular topic?

2.READ. I have no substitute for reading! Read other members posts, understand why they are getting Merit! It comes as no surprise to me that some of the same people get Merit time after time. Its because what they post is thorough, well thought out, colourful and precise. In the short time I have been here i know of AT LEAST 10 people who's posts i actually look for first. As i know they will have something good to say and it will be a good read. I'll not post names incase people think I'm hinting for merit!  Grin I'm not saying to plagiarize these guys, just to understand why its happening thats all.

3.LEARN So you might be new to Crypto, that's cool, we have all been there! Why not harness the power of the forum and research an answer in depth before posting a pi$$ poor reply? If you're genuinely here for the right reasons then educate yourself on the topics before replying and I have no doubt that in time your contribution will be just rewarded!  Wink

4.BE POSITIVE Negativity, begging for merit, and moaning will get you nowhere FAST! The minute you start whining on here, the less likely people will help you. If there's something you don't like or agree with, try and rephrase in a positive manner, if you cant, then just avoid posting your thoughts out loud!  Roll Eyes

5.BE REALISTIC A few of us newbies think you can just roll up post a few replies and get showered with merit, sorry, its not happening guys! Imagine you start a new job, and within a few days you are trying to be CEO of the company? Its not going to happen is it? Merit is awarded on exactly what it is- MERIT! Put in the graft, and you'll get your just rewards!  Wink

Summary

I'm posting this as i know that the above steps will help you on your way, it may seem difficult for some at first but put the work in and the reward will follow.I am not here to brag or gloat I'm a nobody in here compared to most, and at the time of writing this I only have 3 Merit, which is next to nothing- but not too bad for 1 week of posting!  I'm a positive person who will help ANY of you out if i can and i firmly believe my merit will rise the longer I am here-you just have to believe that yours will too and take some action! It matters little if your English isn't great or your grammar is poor, effort and participation is what this place is all about. Effort breeds quality, quality breeds results. Lets keep the crap out of here and we can all make a difference.  Smiley

I will leave you with this- show some of these guys in here respect- they've rubbed proverbial shoulders with the main man himself!

Great post! I think you will have a bright future here and even your post is about Merit it's one of the 1% of all posts about Merit bringing something new and meaningful! It's important to stay positive, there is not much merit around, so hats off, that you received already 3 of them!

Contributing something to the community is one of the essentials most users forget here and they are only looking at the money. It's clear everyone wants to make money, there is nothing wrong if you do this in a normal way. As I can read so far and we see it every day in Bitcoin discussion or Altcoin discussion the result is a bunch of spam and this is not the original function of the forum. I had a look to your post you received your first merits from and I'm sure: this is what we need! Contributing to the community!

I wish you all the best  Wink

The thing is, you don't even need to make quality guides. You could just make quality replies that could greatly contribute to the topic/conversation. Some newbies probably think that you could earn merits only through guides, hence you see some "guides" being posted that are quite generic and with broken english.

Weeks before i posted anything at all, i was on here looking looking through threads, looking at the topics that popped up time after time, looking and learning from the content, looking at the people who are posting the good stuff, looking to see if i could fit in and make a difference and/or help others!

As I told you before, you are a rare specimen, and we are glad you are here. The most important part of your text is what I put above, in my opinion. If the newcomers had this attitude towards the forum, this site would be totally different. This is just a matter of patience, though. To stay weeks learning how something works even before jumping into it requires intelligence, strategy, and patience, but it depends on why are you here. Most of the newcomers are in here just seeking to earn some cents. Even when I understand that for many of us need money, mostly if you live in the 3rd world, as me, I can't see how are they going to achieve that without getting implied on the community.
They conform themselves with some cents, while they could be making a name in here and, in the future, getting a real job, not precisely in the forum, but maybe even outside this site, a great job made my contacts done in here. For that, they will need activity, of course, but an intelligent one. That's why many new users are going to be forever Jr.Members, because they are not looking at the future, but trying to get anything on the present, no matter at what cost.

Reputation is all in here. If you build a good reputation through hard work, you will be considered as a kind of companion, your words will have value to others. On the contrary, if you spend most of your time trying to fulfill the required posting activity your bounty or signature requires with posts of the kind: "Thanks, sir", or, "bitcoin will rise again", or, "please give me merits, sir", you will achieve nothing and you never be a part of the forum.
If you use this posting activity required (in the case you are either on a bounty or a signature) to spend time in here, to learn and to post wisely, even if it takes you far more work, be sure you are putting the first stone towards a great house in the forum.

But, sadly, most of the people prefer to be lazy, to use Google Translator and to say anything stupid, even to copy-paste another user's threads to look intelligent.

Anyway, last week I just was saying on a Meta discussion that I believe there are still good newbies coming, we just need the patience to find them.
Thanks for the thread, OP, keep doing.

Rank of a member on bitcointalk does not correlate with the knowledge one have in cryptocurrency. A newbie on bitcointalk might be a pro trader somewhere trading with several years of experience and having a sound strategy that even a legend member on this forum might not have. I think a Newbie too can make a quality post to earn a merit.

This forum is all about seeking and sharing the knowledge about the crypto industry. Irrespective of their rank, one can always share his knowledge with others. I have learnt many things from the newbies and even I consider myself as a newbie when it comes to learning something new because that's what keeps me going and motivated to explore the new things. It might take some time for the merit feature to inculcate on this forum but one should not stop sharing his knowledge with others. Quality content will always get demerit points, not immediately but definitely.

Well, it's not possible that a newbie earn merits. I see some newbies with 10 merits waiting to rank up when his/her activities meet the requirements. If a newbie contribute to the forum i'm sure he/she will possibly earn merits with his post/thread that help members in the forum. Goodluck to all newbies out there.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys, it really means a lot!  Smiley

I just honestly think that if you are here and you are participating/looking/learning, then do it the right way!

Forget about the money aspect, help yourself first. This may sound a little bit like double standards as I have a signature campaign on here, but i might as well if i'm here right? It's not the primary reason i'm here. Learn to make content that people find helpful and engaging. Try and have a positive outlook, look at it from the perspective of YOU being the one who is giving out the merit- would you give merit to the vast majority of posts in here? I wouldn't.

I'm no expert but i'm trying. All the knowledge I need is here and on the web, I just have to find it, digest it, shape it and then present it in a way that people find useful and informative. This isn't rocket science guys, all you have to do is try a little harder. If your mindset is right- you are almost there.

As i originally posted above, if ANYONE needs a hand or help with anything at all, I will try my best to make the time to help you. Don't be afraid to reach out and ask.  Smiley

Well, it seems that everything is not that simple. This is different from other places. It is only possible to post, but to learn and then do something helpful to get an upgrade.

Exactly. The answer to most of the questions posted on here are already posted on the internet and people are just too lazy to search for it. We only use our previous knowledge acquired and Google to answer most of the questions posted on the forum. It is really not a special skill, it just takes some of your time and a little effort to help others who are lazy or even too busy to do the work on their own.

The thing that makes your posts unique, is the effort that you put in to post something that are easily digested and interpreted. You use the same information, but you structure it correctly and you package it in a user-friendly manner. That is a skill.  Wink

Thanks for your post and encourage the newbies to learn to do a good job in bitcointalk. I like how you write so real and emotional I wish you the best of luck.
I still have not created my first post, I have only limited myself to bounty campaigns but you are a great inspiration for other guys to follow your steps and for them to earn merits too.

This is a good post as we know that many on here beg for their merits! No, that will get you nowhere!! Members work hard for their merits by actually taking the time to post something with quality and something that will help someone. Of course, that is the easiest way to earn merits but many do not understand that or they just simply do not want to take the time to write quality posts because all they care about is gaining activity points and ranks!
