Everything has started in November. One crazy girl - Alice Chittenden, may be you know her - has send me a PM. She thought I'm altcoin expert ( because of my twitter, I guess) and asked me to help her with her master thesis research on altcoins. And I agreed.
At first we decided to bring all existing information about cryptocurrencies together and rework it somehow. Yes, it was rather hard and took more then a month, but we successfully did it! It was partly useless for diploma work, but looked so wonderful... that we use it in another way.
So, we are glad to present you.... It is visualized history of the cryptocurrency world from the first bitcoin whitepaper to present days. Only there you can see the cryptocash ecosystem evolution! Over 200 altcoins on the final pick! Names, logos, specifications and HISTORY!!! Do you like it? Please, give us your opinion about our work! Have some ideas of further Map of coins development? You are really welcome to express it! Advises, thoughts, questions and so on - it's extremely important, because we want to make our site better for you! Ada, Alice & Mapofcoins

Transactions must be included in a block to be properly completed. When you send a transaction, it is broadcast to miners. Miners can then optionally include it in their next blocks. Miners will be more inclined to include your transaction if it has a higher transaction fee.

What coins are cloned from starcoin? there are a few but not 100% sure what ones ( I only know because I was talking to a coder a while back ) I know ADT is because I am one of the devs and I know COL was cloned from ADT there will be a new blockchain for ADT and that will be cloned from CGB so you might want to put ADT v2.0 as a clone of CGB Caps is cloned from CGB as well as I see things that are missing or wrong I will let you know

Nice work.
But with a browser zoom level of 120% (my default in firefox) you can't see the top of the circle (we should be able to scroll up to see it) maybe some awkward svg positioning ?
You shouldn't use the "Halfing reward cycle, blocks:" for every coin, since this doesn’t apply to all. For example MMC (MemoryCoin 2.0) have a 5% reduction in block reward every week.

Cool site! One thing I noticed though is megacoin is under ltc. Is it because it uses scrypt? It actually doesn't use any litecoin code and Kimoto converted a newer beta version of bitcoin to scrypt himself before creating gravity well.

It's very good and useful detail on each coin when those are clicked.. though perhaps some users will miss that detail is avaliable. I wonder you could also throw the same data into a d3:cluster dendrogram http://bl.ocks.org/mbostock/4063570 as an alternate way for the user to choose to display this detail.

We have thought about it. And it was something like this at first warning! may cause brain damage I understand, that mapofcoins is not perfect and as informative as it could be. But we try to do our best. There is a plan to implement filters and search option to help it to become better.

Hooray! Mapofcoins was updated! 1. Yes, we've added a search option: you may easily find out all coins you want to. 2. Number of cryptocurrencies on the top of the screen - now you don't need to count coins manually, if you want to know how many of them exist! 3. All coins launched in February were added to the site 4. "Donate!" button ^_^ www.mapofcoins.com

Hello! We've planned a big update for http://mapofcoins.com/on this week! We're going to release its extended and upgraded version. We’ve made significant changes to the website design and structure. Till that moment mapofcoins.com was just an electronic library for exploring Bitcoin and its forks’ specifications, while very soon you will find two more sections: “Technologies” and “Contribution”.The first one will include all cryptocurrency technologies that famous currencies are based on. “Contribution” section is created to enhance our communication. You will be able to take part in enrichment of the cryptocurrency library as well as inform us about defunct coins and new coins / technologies. Please don’t hesitate and write here all issues about cryptocurrencies’ specifications you’ve noticed on the old website. We’ll be glad to take them into account before rolling out the new version.

This is really cool! I've been interested in a project like this, making a genesis tree of Bitcoin and all its forks. Are you planning to include ALL altcoins ever made? Or only those that maintain an active network? I really like the idea, but looks like the map is very cluttered. Also, if you don't mind the specs for Digitalcoin(DGC) are off, it was updated to use 3 PoW algorithms, you can find all the details here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=785601.0I know some coins were forked from DGC and they aren't on the map; likely many of them have died off.. this is an ambitious project! I'm keeping this website bookmarked and will reference it to others. Good luck mapping this mess out!

We will add 3 PoW algorithms to the Digital Coin’s specifications! Please point out the exact specifications of this coin that we need to change.Concerning the project, we are not planning to get rid of altcoins that become dead afterwards. It is like a tribute of cryptocurrencies’ history. Also there are lots of people who want to investigate the past of cryptocurrency world. Another case is when the launched coins become dead immediately after their market entrance. Such coins usually have no source code or binaries available for users. If these coins are mistakenly included in the tree we would like to be the first who know about it. I agree with you about the cluttered map. I am confident we will find another way of visualizing it. If someone has ideas we are welcome to consider them.

Hello everybody! Want to have a deeper insight into the cryptocurrency world? Then explore the visualized history of cryptocurrencies on mapofcoins.com! We are happy to present you the extended and more user-friendly version of Map of Coins. https://i.imgur.com/xkfNyra.png?1The first thing that could draw your attention is the new website design. Hope it will help you navigate easily through the website sections. Another new feature that you may find useful is a new website section: ‘Technologies’. Here you can expand your knowledge about the cryptocurrency technologies. What is more, with your help we’re planning to enrich our electronic library. Also, there are small changes in the website structure. Now you’ll find maps of coins based on platforms other than Bitcoin on individual pages: Bytecoin MapNXT MapRipple MapAnother thing worth mentioning with the latest update you’re able to take a closer look on the map of each cryptocurrency! And the last, but not least, from now on you can make a contribution to the cryptocurrency world. If you want to submit a new coin or report about a defunct one you do it through the Contribution section on the website. There is always a room for perfection. So, dear friends, we are expecting an active cooperation on your part.

This is really impressive. Following the list of altcoins had become impossible, but your representation does a great job of conveying the extent of the alt coin universe.
I wonder if there is some way to include the viability or value of the coins? But that would probably be a major effort, and this is already really nice.
Thanks and good luck!

Could you make the circle larger, and add some space between the coin names? It would be cool to color code them, maybe based on # of transactions being made on each network? Any kind of indicator to show how much activity there is in the coin. Here are the updated specifications for Digitalcoin. Also note the ANN thread and Source Code links have changed. Thanks for your work --- Info: Digitalcoin is an open-source cryptocurrency focused on transparency and reliability. It is an attempt at an "ideal" cryptocurrency environment for everyday people; there was no premine or instamine, and faithful PoW block rewards scaled over the next decade give it an honest economy. Digitalcoin has a dedicated development team that provides client maintenance to ensure future relevance. Digitalcoin is not owned by any central authority, as such its parameters can be changed should there be enough public interest to do so. The most active of our community can be found in the #digitalcoin channel on freenode IRC servers. We are glad to hear any and all concerns or ideas. Anyone interested in investing their time to the digitalcoin network are more than welcome to join. Specifications: Scrypt, X11, SHA256 Proof of work only Block Time, sec: 40 Reward, coins per block: 5 Reward Info: Rewards grew from 0 to 20, then later reduced to 5 Halfing reward cycle, blocks: Reward halves every three years Total coins: 48,166,000 Difficulty cycle, blocks: Changes every 108 blocks, no more than %25 up/down Difficulty Info: Difficulty started at 0.00024414. Thank you for your contribution! Perfectly! The next update will be this week.
Looking forward to it I have the site bookmarked and will check it periodically. There is potential here as a 'go-to' resource for cryptocurrency history. Listing them by date created would be interesting to see.

http://i59.tinypic.com/qodndh.pngGuys! I am extremely happy to announce the New update of mapofcoins.com . We’ve made a significant progress on the cryptocurrency library. Mostly we’ve paid attention to the functional part. Probably you remember a giant amount of coins which was put together in a chaotic way. From now on you can perform analysis of all cryptocurrency data. With a brand new function you can now choose the Specific Algorithm like: SHA-2 Scrypt Quark X11 Boulderhash CryptoNight Wild Keccak Multi-Algo Others and see the highlighted cryptocurrencies by the chosen Algo! Another new feature is the division of cryptocurrencies into two groups: defunct & running. With the help of “Condition” Filter you can see which coins are developing and which are gone. If some cryptocurrencies become alive, I hope to receive a message from you. And the other thing that cannot go unnoticed is the Visualization Part. https://i.imgur.com/2PfbAcF.png?1To help you navigate with more convenience we've made big changes to the BTC coin tree. Now you can look at the map more thoroughly and find out which cryptocurrencies have been released on any particular month. I hope that mapofcoins.com now could be a good place not only for looking through different cryptocurrencies within the time but also a great instrument for making marketing and business analysis. P.S. Develop and stay tuned with the cryptocurrency world!

iXCoin is the second oldest alt-coin in the world, launched less than 2 weeks after Namecoin, with the latter being the first alt in the world.
People need to stop spewing garbage about Litecoin being the first alt when it wasn't even the first script alt.
Let's get this straight and clear before iXCoin commences its Brutal Global Domination.

Nuggets (NUGs) was launched in May 2013, in the first 25 coins to ever be born. And ShitCoin (SHT) was in the first top 50, born soon after Nuggets. These two coins will prove to be two of the most important developments in the history of Crypto.
