the average joe doesn't really stand a chance getting a good domain because the people into them for a living own massive numbers of them as evidenced by the above post.  Personally I wouldn't spend a dime on any of those domains because a good business will do well through word of mouth, just like a site like coinbase.com has done which really you wouldn't figure would be a bitcoin exchange looking at it. I suppose having bitcoin in the name might help them and if they were smart they'd take their profits and buy up a better name.  I'd say maybe after you have some cash flow use it to buy a better domain if it's needed.. but a crappy service on a good domain is still a crappy service.

In any case I look forward to the day a domain name can be any extension and shortages of good names become somewhat a thing of the past. That day is getting closer and closer. Of course if there are a million possible extensions of a site you'll find a person buying a million of them up...

Just like the 200 copy and paste versions of Bitcoin drove BTC price down?

New extensions don't mean anything, they're ICANN's newest money making scheme. There always have been plenty of options besides the .com, and yet the market decided to pay a premium for it. It's going to stay just that way for the foreseeable future.

I agree, at least while the internet generation is still alive. only a matter of time until QR codes and NFC devices destroy typing a domain all together... be smart.

You guys simply don't understand the billion dollar domain name industry...

110,000 people PER MONTH are typing in "Bitcoin Wallet" in to Google alone, not to mention how many people type in "BitcoinWallet.com" directly in their address bar. The current Pay-Per-Click suggested bid for one click is $1.60 and the competition is picking up, fast.

It is very difficult to have an intelligent conversation about Bitcoin without mentioning "Bitcoin Wallet".

I predicted this exactly, many months ago actually.

With nearly a decade of experience and more than $100 million worth of media as consultant, broker, developer, or licensor, I am fully qualified to tell you that $250k was not "expensive" but rather a very savvy investment to gain a timeless and global competitive advantage in the marketplace.

The sale is real.

In the next few weeks you will see media publications writing stories about this sale.

Every single "Bitcoin Wallet" company on the planet is competing with their website title tags, H1/h2 headers, meta data, and search marketing details (SEO/SEM) for the generic branding "Bitcoin Wallet". That is an undeniable and absolute FACT.

Here is some free education for you guys. And so, point being, the domain name was actually sold too cheap.

Two word - premium domain asset - sales examples:

AreaRugs.com - $405k
RunningShoes.com - $700k
DataCenter.com - $352k
RingTones.com - $750k
BoardGames.com - $450k
PartySupplies.com - $360k
ScreenSavers.com - $335k
MusicVideos.com - $250k
SportingGoods.com - $450k
CookingGames.com - $350k
ShoppingMall.com - $500k
TeamWork.com - $650k
YearBook.com - $237k
MathGames.com - $725k
DiamondRings.com - $228k
ReverseMortgages.com - $600k
PersonalLoans.com - $1mm
GiftBasket.com - $350k
StockPhoto.com - $250k
FreeWebsite.com - $500k
DownloadMusic.com - $242k
SkiResorts.com - $850k
LawFirm.com - $233k
AntiSpyware.com - $550k
FinancialAid.com - $480k
BlackJack.com - $460k
AsianPorn.com - $200k
DomainRegistration.com - $376k
WirelessPhone.com - $335k
ShoppingCart.com - $285k
CrosswordPuzzles.com - $210k
ChinaTours.com - $200k
TokyoHotels.com - $200k

I bought bitcoinslitecoins.com some time ago. Here's to hoping they both take off.

I would pay probably 250 000 for a wallet with 1000BTC in it.
But for a wallet that exists only as a name Smiley))  , no.

Plus , those kind of names don't usually mean success.
Google has no search in it , Amazon no shop , MTgox  no btc and no trade.

This is pretty ridiculous.

A parameter when submitting offers: there is nothing for sale under $4,000. Some names have a much higher price.

^ This is even more ridiculous for domains generated via bots.

What's with the negativity??

You must have the same type of pessimism regarding the ENTIRE BITCOIN ECOSYSTEM since much larger amounts of capital are flowing into all avenues of it.

Put on your thinking-hat and see that something epic is likely to built on top of this domain. Thats something to look forward to Wink

How do we know, except the tweet announcement, that BitcoinWallet.com was sold for $250,000? I can't find it on the web...
Same for bitcoinwallets.com, I can't find the auction... If both are private sales, the price announced can be different from the real transaction price?...I am not an expert, can someone answer my questions?
Thanks!

Look up DNJournal.com for their weekly reports. If a sale makes that list, it has been independently verified.

DNJournal is good. It already posted to public records. We use a database to search publicly published sales. Strangely, Bitcoinwallets.com is showing that it only sold for $3,000, so we aren't including it until we can verify what it really sold for.

Check out our bitcoin domain name sales report (updated weekly): http://www.cryptonames.com/bitcoin-domain-sales.html
