I eat out a lot - airports, hotels and restaurants.
Since I no longer carry cash, I pay for everything on the debit machine.
I remember when tipping was expected to be 10% - 12%
Then it became 10% - 15%
Then it became 15% - 20%, where it stayed at for a number of years.
Just today I look on the machine, and the options are 15%, 20% or 25%.
25% ?!?!? I commented to the waitress and she shrugged and said "I think I'm worth it!"
This is not inflation. As prices go up, the money servers take home also goes up.
This is pure greed from the service industry. Why does a server need to take home hundreds of dollars a night in tips for simply doing her job?
I've been to places where I don't even get the 15% option, the smallest available is the 18% option. I agree it's nuts but I don't think it's the greed from the service industry, it's just that restaurants don't pay their staff normal wages. Most of these people get like $4 an hour and the majority of their income comes from tips. It's a terrible setup but I blame the restaurants, not the staff.
