I eat out a lot - airports, hotels and restaurants.

Since I no longer carry cash, I pay for everything on the debit machine.

I remember when tipping was expected to be 10% - 12%
Then it became 10% - 15%
Then it became 15% - 20%, where it stayed at for a number of years.

Just today I look on the machine, and the options are 15%, 20% or 25%.

25% ?!?!?   I commented to the waitress and she shrugged and said "I think I'm worth it!"

This is not inflation.  As prices go up, the money servers take home also goes up.

This is pure greed from the service industry.  Why does a server need to take home hundreds of dollars a night in tips for simply doing her job?

Some places get sneaky and include the tax into the tipping totals too.

Canada.  The attitude of people here is insane.  She spends literally two minutes in total with me, and she want a quarter of the bill as a tip???

It's because the establishment is too greedy to pay their workers a good wage. They expect us to cover their salary and buy the food

I always tip well. Their salaries suck, the only way they make money is with tips. It's a shit job too.

I just figure that if I'm going out to eat the tip is part of the cost.

I've been to places where I don't even get the 15% option, the smallest available is the 18% option. I agree it's nuts but I don't think it's the greed from the service industry, it's just that restaurants don't pay their staff normal wages. Most of these people get like $4 an hour and the majority of their income comes from tips. It's a terrible setup but I blame the restaurants, not the staff.

I'm not cool enough to have a fancy signature so you're stuck reading this

Isn't this just a way to advertise with fake prices? If they'd include tips in their price, and pay the salary of their employees just like any other company does, the prices would be 20% higher. That's more transparent, but I guess they like fooling their customers.
