[TOP-200] The most generous users giving merits

If you look at Merit Stats, you will see this text:

There are 109 merit sources with a total merit generation of up to 33190 sMerit per 30 days

I wished to detect, who these 109 merit sources are.


A merit source differs from an ordinary member of the Bitcointalk forum. He/she generates some amount of sMerits from nothing every month and can send these merits to other members for useful posts. To detect such users I analyzed all the merit transfer transactions.

People say that Legendaries were credited with up to 200 sMerits on the day the merit system has been implemented, on January 24, 2018. However, when a user receives 2 merits, he/she is credited with 1 sMerit, therefore the new "Generosity" index was introduced. It is equal to the amount of sent merits minus half the amount of received merits.

GENEROSITY = SENT_MERITS - ceil(RECEIVED_MERITS / 2)

Thus, if the "Generosity" index is greater than 200, this user is a merit source for sure. At the current moment the analysis of different time intervals detected 100 such sources. Note that not all the merit sources known to me are included even in the TOP-100, since probably they were appointed to their new status recently or they have their own merit distribution policy. I will write the known merit sources in bold. The currently reg tagged members will be marked in italic, permanently banned users will be strikelined.

Thus, if the indicator "Generousness" is greater than 205, this user is a merit source for sure. At the current moment the analysis of a different time intervals has detected 33 such sources. Notice that not all of the merit sources known by me are included even in TOP-100, since probably they were appointed to their new status recently or they have an own merit distribution policy.

Even though the primal logic used to substract received_sMerits/2 from sent sMerits is what I would look at, the 205 barrier is not so. As per theymo's post regarding initial sMerit airdrop:

So the maximum per person depends on both rank and activity, meaning that the 205 barrier to detect a merit source is incorrect since not all merit sources are Legendries, and even so the maximum would have been 400 sMerit, and no lower limit was officially provided.

Regardless, most of them are probable on that list, although we did discuss on Meta not long ago if it would be wise to publish the list and the conclusion was "Nay".

Note: Digaran was a Merit source and appears with 180 generosity on your list, but also we cannot tell which are no longer merit sources and once were, without looking at a narrow recent timeframe too (as a secondary indicator).

Before analysing the forum’s data, I figure you should search on the forum posts thoroughly to search for your answer. There are more than a bunch of people here who have analysed data in some way or other, and most of them refer at some point how they got to it.
It’s like 99% of the questions placed on the forum– answers are already here somewhere, you just have to invest time into searching for them (and from there on it’s down to your skills and wits).

I am looking at some automated method of Web scrapping or API based Query approach. Reading all the messages and posts to gather data is labor intensive and could take a lot of time to gather information on a related topic.

I've recently decided to merit more posts, not to lower my standards of "quality", but just because "good posts" deserve merit too. Any "good post" is far above the average spam for which the Merit system was introduced, and I don't think people with "good posts" should be restricted in leveling up.
Most of the time, I leave just 1 Merit though. I haven't really decided on when to increase it.

Is there anyone who would like to let me know, how to mine this kind of data.

The detection algorithm has been upgraded. Now the analysis takes into consideration the ranks of users on the day the merit system was introduced.

The maximal initial amounts of sMerit that have been credited on January 24, 2018, are as follows:

• Legendary - 200 sMerit
• Hero Member - 88 sMerit
• Senior Member - 32 sMerit
• Full Member - 7 sMerit
• Member - 1 sMerit
• Jr. Member - 0 sMerit

Such a way the merit sources of all ranks were detected. Here is the table ordered by the "Maximal generosity" index below.

I think LoyceV and Ognasty should have more source merits to distribute. I guess LoyceV is in the test phase and doesn't have that much sMerits yet. if he/she keeps at meriting more random members it would be great.

I've recently decided to merit more posts, not to lower my standards of "quality", but just because "good posts" deserve merit too. Any "good post" is far above the average spam for which the Merit system was introduced, and I don't think people with "good posts" should be restricted in leveling up.
Most of the time, I leave just 1 Merit though. I haven't really decided on when to increase it.

So the maximum per person depends on both rank and activity, meaning that the 205 barrier to detect a merit source is incorrect since not all merit sources are Legendries, and even so the maximum would have been 400 sMerit, and no lower limit was officially provided.

Agree with you. But it is more difficult to detect such non-Legendary user as a merit source. I guess it is almost impossible.
