I know that the answer depends on the project, how much you believe in it, and how much you have to spend.
But I am looking for data about an average ICO investor... are people investing tiny amount in as many projects? or more sizeable amounts?
For example, lets take a $40m ICO, what do you think the average investor puts? $10? $100? $1000? 5,000? more?
Edit: many of the answers were, whether one should invest in an ICO at all. My question was intended to understand more specifically what's the average person place nowadays in an ICO, IF they participate. I am interested in data, about a typical average ICO investment, not whether anyone should or shouldn't invest in an ICO.
to me ico is nonsense, they waste yourr time, force you to do KYC, delay you while purchasing then after just 3 hours of listing on exchange I can buy 10x someone paid in ico for a very cheap amount its just basic clueless programs. Maybe when dumpers are handled well, ico can be better.

When I was beginner, it was like 20-30£, after some time 50-60£, and later when I started knowing much more about the blockchain technology and after some due diligence, I started to invest bit more amount in very select projects. Now the trend has gone to presale.

That was about a few months ago, when I invested in ICO. Not much, only about 0.7 eth which at that time eth was soaring high. After the ICO has finished, the token price has dropped dramatically, even now I see it. Although there is a bonus, but not sufficient to cover losses. After that, I never invested in ICO again.

Risky business to invest big amount of money in ICO, especially in ICO that you don't sure about, at least 90% sure. 1000$ is fine amount of money
Personally i think 1000 is already a big amount to risk in an upcoming project. Though the returns can be pretty tempting if you placed a big amount, i don't think i'm up for ths risk of losing. I've invested in only a few icos and i didn't put anything more than 300 bucks. I'd rather invest in solid alts and coins that are already in the market.

I do not invest large sums, because I simply do not have them, many projects that I previously invested in turned out to be scam, so I no longer invest big money, and many projects did not pay anything in the bounty.

ico investment is very profitable, especially if you are lucky to choose a very successful ico project and the token will rise in price when it is in the market, but for now the crypto market condition is very bad, even the price of tokens or coin from ico also the average price below ico

It depends on the project, If I invest then i do that for +- 500 dollars. But some of people invest 10 or 100000 dollars in one project - it depends.

I don't invest anything at all i can't afford to lose money and investing in ICO is too risky, you have to be prepared for the project to fail and to loose your money. there should be legislation for ICO in order to get back your money in case of a scam or a project which fail, currently it is way too dangerous.

I never invested over $ 1000 for ICO, because I think ICO is very risky and it is often experienced by my friends

Usually i invest in ico 5 or 10% of my bankroll. If i am 100% confident in this project, i can invest 20-25%. Anyway i never put all my money in one project, even if it looks very cool.

Now it is generally risky to invest in projects. All the projects in which I participated in the bounty show mostly back Iks. at an ISO price of 0.1 $, the price is very likely 0.02 $. It is better to wait on decentralized exchanges where bounty hunters can sell everything cheaper than it was on sale.

Market recovery will take time and you made a wise decision here op. This is a great time to purchase Bitcoin and many altcoins at low prices, but the problem is that we don't know how long we need to wait until the market recovers so that we can gain profit on our investments. I recommend investing only for the long term at the moment and forget about the short term for now. If you can HODL your coins and tokens for a long period of time, do your research and select coins with long term potential like Ethereum, NEO, Ripple etc. 1000$ seems to be the optimal amount to risk at this moment.

I'm risking not more than $1000 because i know most of upcoming ico will be traded below ico price until the market will recover.
Yes most projects end up cheaper on exchanges nowadays which defeats the purpose investing in an ICO in the first place, I made a few bets on supposedly good projects but they tanked. Therefore I am staying away from doing more ICOs at this time, I really wonder why so many people are still interested in ICOs in this current market conditions.

It all depends on what kind of capital the investor has. If the proposal is very interesting, the maximum that can be allocated to the project is 1% of the capital. This method of investment will help to diversify your portfolio as much as possible, and in the case of the collapse of the project, this loss will not affect your capital. Personally, I invest small amounts in ICO, because I do not have large funds. Typically no more than 1 ETH.

When choosing a good project, I usually invest about 0.5-1ETH. If the investment is correct then I will continue to increase capital.

i have tried once to invest 1ethereum and the project become successful so my investment tripled but the next that i tried turns scamming that the dev return only half of my money thats why from that moment i stopped joining ICO. But if you are really interested and wanted to try then out only atleast half ethereum per project so even if the project becomes scam then theres only small amount that you have lost

30% of my capital is invested in ico. In 2017, I made a lot of money by investing in ico. Investing in ico means buying new shares of stocks.
