The block chain is the main innovation of Bitcoin. It is the first distributed timestamping system.

There are a couple of ways: Flash and Java, if you disable Java on your system and set chrome to click to play for flash, as well as installing Adblock+, you should be relatively safe, however if you download cracked applications on a daily basis, the likelihood increases of you getting your bitcoins stolen.

right now I just have everything in Blockchain with adblock and chrome. I am just always paranoid because every day when I come on here I see many stories of peoples BTC getting stolen.

The initial responses seem to be alluding to wallet-stealing malware.

The thing to remember is that proof of ownership with Bitcoin is knowledge of a private key. For large amounts, the private key should not even be stored on an Internet-connected computer.

Because transactions are irreversible, computer security suddenly has money on the line.

I recommend paper wallets. Of course, you have to keep in mind that if anybody is able to read the keys without your knowledge, they would be able to spend the coins at any time.

I also recommend keeping more than one copy in at least 2 geographically separate locations. While this will increase the risk of theft, it will also reduce the chances of loosing your Bitcoin in some disaster that destroys one location.

Maybe you want to check our our website www.pi-wallet.com
We offer a solution for people to store their coins offline in order to prevent them from being stolen by hackers. Additionally, there are lots of easy to restore backup methods available to prevent coins from getting lost to data corruption.

How are most bitcoins stolen and how can I avoid that fate?

1) user noob atitude (trust an unknown user to sell bitcoin for paypal ... and chargeback begin !)
2) computer compromise (by virus ... but, in usual way, by other person use the same computer and destroy it)
3) user HEAVY noob strategy : trust the hard drive that it hold bitcoin-QT and not backup the wallet.dat
4) user VERY HEAVY noob reaction : trust "virtual" wallet host in the plateform that they exchange BTC because fee to retrieve BTC in bitcoin-QT are too high.

so :

- use bitcoin-QT
- use "one shot" stratégy on plateform exchange (insert USD/Euro, buy BTC, retrieve immediatly BTC to bitcoin-QT)
- backup wallet.dat on 3 different USB storage
- secure PC (like normal way... use a "commercial" antivirus and not a free antivirus)
