DING - ranking up - DOES THE MERIT SYSTEM ACTUALLY WORKS?

Sorry if most of you won't probably care, but still: DING

(after some months of lurking) I joined this forum on: January 15, 2018, 08:43:23 PM
Starting merit: 0. Yesterday, six month later, i became a Full Member with my 100th merit point. Most of them gained in the italian sub-section, where we are a small community also lacking on merit source (all 1+1+2+1+1 merit tx, NO 20/50 merit for comment or buying/trading merit bs)
No particular skills in blockhain dev or anything, just a lot of curiosity and wish to learn this world. Trying to share what i know and be useful to the community in my posting. Plus yea, also joined with some bs the W/O 3d cause, why not

Anyway, just want to say that the merit system can work, i know a lot are complaining but the system is not the real problem, i think the problem is how most people use it







PLUS, honestly I don't actually care about all this, since i'm not really interested on signature campaign

Congratulations mate for earning the Full Member rank. I hope people who keep thinking that they can not rank up for merit they will find some inspirations from you too. And of-course for me, it's good to see I have another one to add in this post

I added an Italian section to the Fit to Talk English project. This was intended to help Italian speakers to translate posts into English, so that they could gain merits on the english boards. So far I have had no takers.

If you took a look at my sig there are some post i made (exchanges and wallet list), can start thinking translate those if it's useful or something like that is missing on the main forum (but i dont think lol)

God damn it, I still haven’t ‘earnt’ 100 Merit’s yet. Congratulations OP on ranking up, obviously well deserved. It’s even harder for lower ranked accounts to rank up literally due to the stigma & prejudice against being a new account.

Proud of you bud. You say that most people will likely not care, but I think it is imperative that we receive testimonials from users such as yourself; users that have come, started at 0 merit and worked their way through the system as it was intended. It enables all of us to get another look, or test-case to see how the merit-system is working and the type of users it is pushing "to the top".

Reading through your posts (quickly), it seems like you genuinely just enjoy your time around here. Posting pictures, making jokes, and just generally having an enjoyable experience. You learn when it is time, lurk and make comments that are fun to read.

Keep it up, we do care, we're a community and we've been here for each other for years.

Do you mean a small group of people (cartel) who'd only complement each other with merit and trust feedbacks? yes in that case you are here for years. I bet if OP were not on a local board he/she could never get those 100 merits. nothing has changed other than making ranking up a hard task for everybody and like always those with friends and alt accounts are on top just like before. industrial account farmers got hit hard by the merit system and so as ordinary members from non-English countries.

I'm speaking of everyone, including you, digaran. We are a community, what role you play within it is your own choice. What you are speaking of does not exist. You always have an excuse for why everyone else can succeed, except yourself; this is an extremely sad victimhood mentality. Theymos is actively seeking merit sources for Non-English boards, since the beginning of the implementation.

Actually, yes. This is certainly because of those Italians usually active only on their own local forum and lacks smart people to be merited, or you can say he's the only chosen one who deserves merit. But, whatever, he was trying hard and mainly active to contribute on his local forum, so he deserves to rank up. Congrats.It might be great if theymos gives an automated reply in your message to gratitude if you're ranked up in every rank.

I'm not sure those are the real reasons.  I think it's the general shitty nature of their posts, which 99% of the time are being made with no thought or effort whatsoever, and they're being made in threads that no one will ever read. 

Plus there are so many noobs that just by the math alone, a large proportion of them are not going to earn merits.

Congrats to OP, though I'm starting to wonder whether threads like this that purport to show that the merit system works are necessary.  I think they're going to attract the members who haven't earned any merits, which could lead to another bitch-fest.  It's basically rubbing salt in their wounds.  I don't find that particular act distasteful, but I'm not sure the aftereffects are all that good.

Too hard to believe someone’s not interested in sig campaign?
Never thought about this forum as a place where to “work” / make money, but only a place where to learn and share knowledge. Believe it or not that’s how it is.

Nb: I know I actually have a sig, but as you can see it’s not a bounty, only links to a newbie welcome guide + some post I made as a result of personal research of information i than thought could be useful for the community.
All without referrals or any other kind of personal reward if not the hope of being useful, since I was a newbie not too long ago:)

I understand the difference between local forums and main section, but that’s what I wanted to point out too.
As a small community, we are mainly free from spam and other bounties bs, the “tone” of posts/conversations are keeped high level and so why not, in this scenario the merit system can actually be used as intended.


Ps: of course I’m not the only one that deserved those merit, there are also users who easily did better too:)

I hope my local community can be like yours. We've had major problems in Indonesian section as a lot of members only care about money. I don't mean everyone, but yeah, you know what I'm talking about.

BTW, there are a lot of people in my community who rank up and gain more than 100 merits like you do OP.

Well congrats from me too.

If you haven't walk this path yourself you cannot understand what this means for a newbie to rank up to full member.
I know and I was really excited about it when I became Full Member. Now I have my avatar- the kind of personality in this anonymous word and I have everything I need.

Soon I'll have the activity to be a Sr. Member and maybe the missing merit will come too, you never know, but I don't really care and everything happens naturally, no need to join any merit review services, nothing.

So, just a tip, focus on being you here, even behind the anonymity of the forum just be yourself.

Do something useful, like I'm planning to build soon my first full node and LN node, and open a few channels.
Plan your steps ahead.

Congratulations!! I've been lurking in threads about merits for quite some time now and to be honest, I was kind of depressed as I thought it would be close to impossible for a new user like me (I created the account years ago, but I'm only using it now) to gain merits from other users as I know that they are extremely valuable.

However, after knowing that you have gained more than 100 merits AND that you only started in January this year, I have gained a little inspiration and a glimmer of hope hahaha. I hope I get to have merits too, one day!!! Again, congratulations and good job!!

Too many people are here to make money. The original purpose of the board, as I've been told, was to bring developers and influencers together to disseminate information about Bitcoin, help new users through the technology and provide one single point where Devs and contributors could congregate. As with anything that starts out with a noble purpose, people will eventually bend it to their own priorities, mainly, making money in any way possible.

I like the Merit system but, I think it's a bit harsh. I would more like to see a ranking up system that combines length of time as a member, time spent posting in the forums, merit, and something like "extra credit" for really helpful posts. I know, impossible to administer right? Depends on how automated you can make it.

Many of you may have had a similar experience to mine. I started here around 2013/14 and rose to rank of "Hero" at which point my account was hacked and I lost it. No help from the Mods (my fault for not posting a signed message I suppose) so, I created a new account which was about to go Hero when it too was hacked. That's when this account was created. A month or so before this account was due to rank up to Hero, BOOM, Merit comes into play.

So now, back to the waiting game and being dependent on others (the part I really don't like) to make it back to Hero at least.

A true "love/hate" relationship. Anyway, enough of this, have real work to do. Wish you all the best!
