If ever or whenever cryptocurrency goes mainstream then BTC and ETH will definitely take the lead. However, we are all open for possibilities and there might be a new cryptocurrency that will exist and overtake the lead. This is a little foggy at the moment but who knows.

agree, bitcoin and ethereum have too strong dominance, so it is very unlikely that there will be a replacement coin, let alone as we know the new token or coin also seems to depend heavily on price movements of both coins

Yeah you are absolutely right. For now many coins is newly entering in crypto market now but when the time past that new coin is recovering and build a good and strong foundation that bitcoin and ethereum is not totally defeated but it will equal to them.
