First you need to decide whether you want long term investment or short term investment. $500 is not a huge amount to invest in cryptos. But i would say choose those coins which have huge market cap. Second refer past price trends. As you're newbie , do some research before spending your money.

My personal strategy for this bear market was to 1) buy the dip :"(   2) invest in ICOs that have their tokens pegged to a certain price in eth.  The first isn't going so well for me till now for good things come to those who wait! Everyone should know by now why this advice might not be the best. It is not a good time when the price is going down though the loss wont have been that much like when it was $19k. When the speculation is still $3000, I will advice patience.

Coinmarketcap is good source to gain necessary knowledge about crypto coins , its demand , its marketcap and price. Do some analysis before investing in any coin. Do not listen to anybody because everybody have their own goals. Do some research , refer coinmarketcap website you will get eveything what is necessary for investment.
