Most appealing and appears to be the most friendly digital coin to your average-day-person, the one's who knows nothing or little about crypto-currencies. Those people also know next to nothing about investing, trading or anything to do with how money is made on exchanges.

These are the types of people Doge attracts.

I'd give doge this much credibility at the least.

There's no such thing as a "gateway drug" and there's no such thing as a gateway coin. People who come in on one coin won't move to another one that is exactly the same but more serious.

People want whole units such as 1 doge, instead of say... .0000000521 bitcoin.
So when people receive 1000 doge, they feel good than they would with .0000000521 bitcoin.

Pennies take that concept to a whole new level to where each unit can't be divided into say.....   .0001 penny.

First got DOGE.

Then bitcoin, litecoin.

Now I have at least 5 other alts. So yes, I'd say it has been a gateway-coin for me, although it's still my favourite by far.

The only slight flaw in this logic:

When Doges are massively dumped and crash to virtually nothing one day, (which they will, because miners don't mine for the fun of it)
then all those bright new shining investors will never invest in bitcoin, litecoin, etc.

Its the worst kind of way introduce anyone to investing in alt coins... in a meme-joke-not-serious pump-and-dump coin.

I hate to shatter the illusion of all the Miners mining billions of these coins in Mom's basement...
