I would buy Ethereum, as this is one of the promising coins and has a huge popularity among users of crypto currency.
But you must make decisions only yourself.

I always prefer to invest in 3 to 4 coins rather than investing and waiting for profit in one particular coin. There are big disadvantage and risk involved investing in one single coin that too a slow performing coin. Prefer for 3 to 4 coins to invest and make sure you validate their potential and future growth by looking into their charts on the price fluctuations. Always go for top 50 coins investment if you are a first time investor.

I'd invest in Ethereum. I wouldn't put money just inside of any coin that is listed in the top #100 coins.

Well first of all 3000 is a good start. I would suggest you dive deep into infrastructure projects like AION and Elastos. Whose ones have good developers, their main net is up and running and both of them already have a list of potential DApps being built on top of them. Not financial advice.
