I'm not quite sure that I understand what you mean by "real token", but anyway it's both.

1- it is a very useful tool for a simple and cheap way to diversify crypto assets. It allows you to spread your the risk, while saving time and costs.
2- Index based decisions can be speculatively valuable. Index value allows you to take a view on whether you think the value of the market is going up or down.
