Is Telegram overrated?

Every ICO nowadays needs must display a Telegram channel, that has become the fashion. But, is it really necessary to do so?

I'm asking because I came across a newly launched ICO whose Telegram channel displays the same two posts (about their ICO) repeated daily. They have about a couple of thousand subscribers, but no engagement, barring a few stray hi's and memes.

On a few other ICO channels, I've observed bot behaviour, and admin strikedowns, but no messages regarding the token itself. Finally, even the messages that seemed relevant were all of the type that an FAQ would've clarified.

So, is it time we call the bluff on this particular social media platform?

Are your experiences different from what I've stated above?

Pretty much the same. At first, blockchain projects seemed to favor Slack, but then scammers ruined it, harming many unsuspected victims. Slack team didn't do much to stop them. People mostly left for Discord and Telegram. In Telegram, when someone you don't know writes you a private message, for some reason your suspicion level is higher, so the scammers didn't like Telegram much. And then MetaCert Security came and kinda solved the problem.

The downside to Telegram, as you have noticed, is a very low signal-to-noise ratio. At least in Slack there was a #random channel, for all the "when lambo"s.

So, is it time we call the bluff on this particular social media platform?

Perhaps, the ICOs with Social Network construct are better placed in this regard. They need only operate a forum module/ software for this purpose, like here at Bitcointalk.

Just mute the groups/channels — problem solved.
My only problem with Telegram, like other chat apps is the mobile numbers they request before one can register.. Bad for privacy!

Some of the chat app feature are quite useful... like the ability to pin channels and groups. The notifications are very useful too!

Perhaps ICO's are in too many places -- telegram, discord, etc.?  Although I'm not sure they can limit themselves to any single community.  Either way, itdoesn't make much sense to redundantly post daily with no engagement.

The role of the telegraph is obvious, in order to allow investors/bounty hunters to communicate with the project responsible party, I think this is a very important communication channel!

They find it easier to use and others might be just following the popularity and other ICOs are using for their own channel contact. It's necessary to have contacts with a representative from the ICO developers but it's not necessary to use telegram but most of the crypto folks are into it.

That's how marketing works, if that channel isn't for their FAQ's and a place to know more about their ICO it's only for bumping their channel and reminding people who joined their telegram channel.

I think this is necessary. The schema is a place to discuss the project where the administrators and players interact directly with each other so that the project is approached in detail to investors.

Get used to it because thats how it works and you cant do anything if those project owners would used up this platform since we do know crypto traffic is somehow high into these area. We cant really avoid those dead chatboxes or groups which we can see theres no response,full of spam, bot responses. The thing you should focus is you do know how to check out updates towards on the project you are following into.

Some legit projects will answer all the questions asked by the people on the telegram channel,but now a days the telegram channel is just over loaded with bounty hunters they were joining here for the stakes awarded in the telegram campaign so they don't worry what is happening around they just want their token.But ANN thread is more important to keep updated about that project.

Well, I personally go to discord against telegram all day long. Yes, I used to like Telegram and still use it from time to time, but it has nothing on Discord.  It has so many advantages over Telegram it is unbelievable people even use Telegram these days.

Only downside of discord is, that it is not widely accepted by ICOs yet. With that being said, all of the community driven projects use it and are doing just fine.

I do not think that telegram as a platform for promoting a project is over rated because it is a very important place where the bounty hunters can communicate directly with the representative of the project, they ask disturbing questions and get answers to it from this channel.

telegram in my opinion is very important for a project. sometimes I measure the success rate of a project from the number of communities that exist in telegram, it certainly affects the meaning of many who are interested to join the project but want to know more detailed information.
can not be denied to the user of course there are still beginners and do not know how to buy tokens on a project and it needs guidance by a team of experts.

It certainly is not bad for an ICO to have a telegram channel. It allows direct contact between the ICO team and investors. If the ICO team in the channel answers the investors' questions and does a good job, it is certainly good for the ICO. I think this is what causes more investors to invest. But if the ICO team does its job in the channel badly, it will negatively affect the ICO and maybe scares investors.

I trust the mail because it is the only social network that is protected by phone numbers, it deserves what we see, is widely used by the community and in particular highly confidential personal information.

technically telegram became one of the ways ICO participants and bounty connected with one of the project managers but who deeply regretted in the telegram group that many members are not active and bot even they leave it
