Bitstamp has halted Bitcoin & Ripple withdrawals (TODAY FEB20th), various users have now received this following email!:

Subject: Blocked Bitcoin and Ripple Withdrawals‏

" Bitstamp has detected an increase in the number of reports of phishing emails which were also received by some of our clients. Our technical team responded by examining the threat and setting immediate security measures in place to prevent potential risks.

As a precaution we have also applied this security measure to your account.

If you have received any emails with suspicious content and have opened links or attachments we highly recommend that you immediately contact a computer expert.

While we appreciate that this comes as an inconvenience we are convinced that our security precautions are in accordance with your expectations in keeping your account secure."

I've confirmed with many fellow Bitcoiners and indeed they've received this email (i have yet to receive it), after receiving this email they are unable to withdraw BTC anymore

what the hell is going on...

What exactly is the problem with that? It's just a safety precaution against recent phishing attempts and not a technical issue with their withdrawals? Or am I missing something?

Bitcoin withdrawals are not halted for all accounts. The option is still available for me and I have not received this warning mail. Furthermore, I've performed 4 Bitcoin-withdrawals today and they all went through as usual.

So it seems that only certain accounts are at risk for some reason.

Here's what I posted before, in the bitstamp thread and the wall thread:

re: Bitstamp withdrawal.

Might be some automatized safety thing, that wasn't exactly thought through very well?

Maybe something like: If IP address changes regularly, stop withdrawal. Something moronic like that.

Aaanyway...

Just bought 1 btc for testing purposes, and btc withdrawal works for me, as they always did. Arrived at my address a few minutes later.

NOTE: I'm not denying that some accounts have problems withdrawing, but at least we know that not all accounts are affected.

Probably the same people who engineered the market collapse at MtGox are trying to achieve similar results with Bitstamp.
This attack is probably just the start, they'll try to create panic by spreading FUD, hoping to crash hard the price on Bitstamp too.

Sometimes, if it looks too bullish, it's actually bearish

And here is user/hazek (of Bitstamp)'s reply, just this second. Rather terse, they should really work on their communication, but in principle what most of use suspected:

There are no general Bitcoin withdrawal issues presently. User's who are reporting that they are unable to withdraw Bitcoins will be notified individually via email.

LOL. Bitcoin is working fine.

Centralized exchanges... not so much.

Apparently the bridge between Bitcoin and fiat is very difficult to build.

If you aren't the sole controller of your private keys, you don't have any bitcoins.

Have just requested withdrawal of 30btc. Status: "Waiting to be processed"

why would you ever keep 30btc on an exchange? keeping over like .5 not in a wallet seems stupid.
