You could circumvent the problem with bitcoin-qt by using a wallet that doesn't need the entire blockchain such as MultiBit.

Or Electrum

Or https://blockchain.info/wallet

Go to the blockchain and enter the address from the wallet, this will tell you if you have money in it.

First of all be sure about that.

The next step is to get the private key.  Threads exist on how to extract private key from bitcoin-qt, not difficult.  Then you are free of that wallet.  You can import that to your choice of wallets such as previously suggested.

Remember value in bitcoin is strictly a public/private key with the public key and value in the blockchain - there is no "value" in a wallet unless the keys are owned by a third party web wallet service, in which case they possess your coins and sort of give them to you as you transact.

If you have the private and public key on a piece of paper, you are free of the bitcoin-qt wallet issue you have.
