People tend to get quite confused with all this fancy crypto stuff and confused people tend to say funny things when they try to act competent. So, what's the most stupid thing you've heard about bitcoin recently?

Far too many...
Just read any bitcoin related article on Forbes, Business Insider or WSJ... and read the comments too.

Seen on twitter. "Oh great, the same banksters who gave us the wall St. bailout are now ramming this bitcoin stuff down our throat!" Not a lot of research there.

The deaths of MtGox means the death of bitcoin. The latest, piece of nonsense from the media.

People will say all kinds of random nonsense about what they don't understand. I'm not sure ignorance is the worst kind of stupidity.
From those that should know better, there's often talk only of Bitcoins only as currency; which rather misses the point of what makes it valuable. 'Cryptocurrency' perhaps describes some alt-coins with no ambitions; however, Bitcoin's ability to provide confidence relative to transactions and act as a public ledger, is the heart of it. Because it's valuable, it can then be used as currency.. ~obviously.
The worst kind of stupidities follow directly from the conservative mindset, looking to put down anything that is change to their current power and wealth. Demonising the enemy is lazy and beyond ignorance. I expect there are then many examples of comments from traditional banksters and politicians worried that Bitcoin might shine a light on the mess they've created, forcing the issue.

* Bitcoin should be regulated * Bitcoin needs to have blacklists * I'm safely storing my coins on <insert web site here> * "We'll never see $3 again" (when it was under $3), but you can replace it with $1, $10, $33, $266, $1200. * Bitcoin is a Ponzi scheme * Bitcoin isn't backed by governments so it will fail. (Gold and silver aren't either). * "Incoming crash imminent" * "People can just print more bitcoins, they are on the computer" And my favorite for now: * "You can safely use tx id's to verify if a transaction has made it into a block" - MtGox.
There are so many though, it is hard to think of them all...

"But bitcoin isn't real money" (some of my friends) "I dont understand it so it must be a scam" (From my mom...lol.) "bitcoin is going nowhere, the government will never let bitcoin be legal" (my brother) This was all way before the big bitcoin boom, since then all of the people I mentioned above are into coins.

Less of a stupid comment, more of a common conundrum:
"1 Bitcoin costs $600? That is too expensive for me."

My SO has banned me from buying bitcoin. I watched bitcoin go down to $425 / BTC on coinbase briefly a couple days ago, but I was unable to take advantage of it. My SO has declared, "Bidcoin is just a ponzi scheme cooked up by nerds. If you buy any bidcoin, I will break up with you. I don't sleep with nerds." So, I called up my "nerd" buddy and told about the low price, he bought in and now is sitting on a 30% profit. He made $3000 in less than 48 hours (he bought at $450/BTC, it's now $585 on Winkdex). My "nerd" buddy bought me a beer. At least I got a beer out of it. (I have to look at it from the bright side)

And not because of bitcoin.
