I just sent 0.01 bitcoins from my qt wallet to my exchange wallet but when I went to look up the transaction under blockchain it shows 0.01 being sent to my exchange wallet but 0.9 being sent to a different address. My balance under blockchain reflects sending 0.1 while my balance under my qt wallet shows ive only sent 0.01?

Transactions must be included in a block to be properly completed. When you send a transaction, it is broadcast to miners. Miners can then optionally include it in their next blocks. Miners will be more inclined to include your transaction if it has a higher transaction fee.

You have to understand how Bitcoin QT works. To protect your privacy, the client takes the neccesary inputs for the transaction and sends them to the destination address, the reminder is then sent to a "change"-address within your wallet. Your wallet has a set of 100 pregenerated addresses for change, so your coins are not lost, but just sit in another address.
