Hello.

I restored my Jaxx wallet with my 12 words.
The wallet came empty. All my ETH is lost.

WTD?

I have the backup media still ok and I still have my 12 words written down.

Is it a completely 'fresh' wallet ?
Or do the addresses inside this wallet have a transaction history ?

You might want to uninstall jaxx, delete (or better: just rename) the jaxx folder inside the 'AppData' folder and reinstall it.
If its a synchronization issue, this should fix it.

But, Jaxx is known to be buggy and vulnerable. It is NOT recommended to use this wallet.
As soon as you are able to access your coins again, please move them to a safer wallet.

Did you use the right derivation path when restoring?

Check that.

https://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/63804/restore-wallet-from-jaxx-to-coinomi-eth-missing-but-btc-and-ltc-are-fine

I had a tiny amount of ETH on a Coinomi wallet that disappeared after a restoration. I really can't remember what I did now to find it again but ETH needed extra steps compared to BTC which just reappears. It took me quite a while to get it back.

I don't think your Eth was lost. Jaxx sometimes doesn't show the correct balance of the wallet, if you're sure with your 12 words seed (including the sequence) and there were no transactions that have been made, then your funds are there.

  • Are you using the latest version of the wallet? If not, update it to version 1.3.18
  • If still not showing, try restoring your wallet on other jaxx platform (Mobile: Android/iPhone, Tablet/iPad, Chrome Extension)

If you want further assistance, then you should contact their support by:

PS. You can also restore it using other wallets that supports 12-word mnemonic phrase.

Have you ever used those 12 words to restore your wallet before?

You wouldn't be the first person to try using their 12 words, only to discover that they are not the correct ones for the wallet they're currently using.

I'm not sure how people do it, but somehow they get 12 words, and then they create a new wallet that is actually using a different seed??!?

I always double check that a seed mnemonic recreates the correct addresses before committing coins to a wallet... It's one of the reasons I refuse to use Exodus, it won't even show you the backup mnemonic until you have received coins!!?! Undecided

Aren't Jaxx and Exodus completely unrelated wallets ?
I thought Jaxx does allow exporting the seed. Even without having a balance stored there.

Either way.. Jaxx AND Exodus are both wallets which should NOT be advised to use. Both seem to be buggy and partly exploitable.

@OP:
The best bet would be to use any other compatible wallet. Jaxx follows BIP 32/39/44.
If you didn't change any settings upon creating the wallet (i.e. derivation path; i am not sure if you are even allowed to change that parameter there) your seed should create the same addresses / private keys.

Yes... The point I was making is that you should always test that the backup you have works before committing money... Exodus doesn't allow this.

Jaxx does, but I suspect the OP never tested their backup... And have found out (too late) that the backup they have is not for the wallet they've been using

This is what i do presume too which he might able to list out the wrong back up for a certain wallet because if above recommendations doesnt work then this would really be the possible reason.
If its on latest version and if its already synchronized then there would be no other way.

You were right about this! I completely effed up this one.

But learned from the first fup though. Jaxx seems to be quite buggy, I had a similar (ish) problem later with BCH too. I tried to do another wallet on another computer, transfer some coin to it, then delete it and restore it to the same or different wallet, at least from Bitpay to Exodus, Exodus to Coinomi, etc works. And I also got the BCH working from Jaxx to Coinomi. I am toggling these between mac, iphone and 2 windows computers. The original ETH stack is still missing though. Cheesy

Using electrum wallet? I thought your ETH is missing AFAIK electrum is only for bitcoin though there are some several forks of this wallet (which is cannot be trusted) but never heard about electrum for ETH. Would you tell us if where you download that electrum.

For future people searching for this you'd be doing them a favour by telling them what happened. Though as above I don't see how you got ETH out with Electrum.

You are right.

So I did this:

I opened the wallet with the missing asset, example the Jaxx-wallet containing ETH.
Then I went to the tools- section and wrote out my ETH-private key.
Then I opened Exodus wallet, went to the tools- section and imported my ETH-private key - which retrieved my long lost assets. Woohoo!
Then I shapeshifted these ETH to my Electrum wallet as Bitcoin.

And then I did the same operation with BCH. Private keys out, imported private keys to a different wallet. Then transfer to BTC and move to a more steady wallet.

So now my assets are safeish in the Electrum wallet as BTC. I also ordered a USB-wallet for cold storage.

From my experience, I think using these experimental multiwallets is not very convenient. I also had to help one of my collagues to retrieve his lost coins. I think I will not use shapeshift anymore though it has worked every time. I think more appropriate way is to use a market of some sorts.

How were you able to open your wallet ?
I thought your word phrase did open a completely 'new' wallet ? You never had the idea to tell us it is the same address shown, just with 0 funds  Huh
This would have accelerated this whole process a lot.

I also ordered a USB-wallet for cold storage.

I hope by 'USB-wallet' you are actually referring to a hardware wallet ?
You can't use an USB-stick as a cold wallet. Those would not be a good storage solution. A real hardware wallet (micro computer / secure element) is required (e.g. trezor/ledger) to keep the private keys offline.

I'm not 100% sure what happened.

When I restored the wallet from seed it was empty but when I imported the private key of that same wallet it wasn't.
And yes, I meant trezor stick.

I am.

You always had access to your wallet. Jaxx somehow just wasn't able to retrieve the up-do-date information regarding your addresses/balances.
This is purely due to jaxx being buggy.

The next time, make sure to at least remember 1 of your addresses, so you can recognize them if something like this were to happen again.

You are right.
Could you recommend me some multicurrency-wallets or is it better to buy and store altcoins in market accounts?

From now on I'll write down everything I do. Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy
