Hello,
been trying to put a card on a x1 slot with x1-x16 riser but I get a black screen despite being detected (see through ssh).

Setup:
Asrock z77 Extreme 3
intel celeron
4 280x XFX TDFD
2 GB DDR 1600Mhz
Fortron Aurum Gold 1000w
usb 2.0 Xubuntu 12.10
Catalyst version 12.10
the date from
dmesg | grep fglrx
gives me  [Nov 22 2013]  so it should be 12.10
cgminer 3.7.2

Cards are undervolted.

Tried a different riser powered/non-powered. Same thing.
3 cards work on the 3 x16 slots (with risers) but when I put one of them on the x1
it's a black screen.

There is a black screen but I can still connect with ssh and see that it actually detects the card.

when I try to start VNC (x11vnc) it says:
Quote
XOpenDisplay failed. No -display or DISPLAY.

fglrxinfo
Quote
Error: unable to open display (null)

Followed the instructions here:
http://gentoovps.net/add-a-new-card-to-cgminer/
but still no improvement.

lspci | grep -i vga

detects all 3 cards. If it detects the card I don't need pin shorting, do I?

If the 16x-16x risers work fine but the 1x-16x risers do not then it's your motherboards fault, you can test this by swapping out another motherboard if you have one handy.

Otherwise i'd try the classic fixes, pin shorting (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=36061.0) and dummy plugs(http://rumorscity.com/2013/12/06/how-to-create-dummy-plugs-for-your-graphics-cards/).

thanks for the input everything_zen,

After a few starts the motherboard burnt down. Smiley

I have a second z77 ext 3 mobo and have put it now. It was working properly before, but now it's acting strange too...

Waited for the x1 x16 usb raisers and trying with them. Very funky and strange behaviour...

Will continue testing
