I've been able to get my 48 miners powered by a single windows x64 machine. I was using anker 13 port powered hubs and I found that you can't daisy-chain them, as windows sees each block of 4 ports as a daisy-chained "hub."

Basically, you need to plug each hub into the machine or, at the very least, daisy-chain off the first port. Here is my current setup, minus a few gridseeds.

When I initially plugged these units in, I couldn’t get windows 7 x64 to see the virtual com ports, and found I needed to install the virtual com driver that I found here: http://www.diffpair.com/lightningasic/LIGHTNINGASIC%20Gold%20miner%20USB%20driver.rar

I’m running separate instances of the custom-coded cpuminer with the BTC core shut off for scrypt-only mining. I was able to get that from here:  http://cryptomining-blog.com/1165-download-cpuminer-for-gridseed-5-chip-gc3355-asics-with-reduced-power-usage/

I have been able to get about 16 mh when mining with 49 of these units. I’ve been running them for 48 hours straight now with no disconnects, no reboots, and 100% stability. If you are having issues with the supplied controller, I suggest you ditch it and use a computer. If you’ve still got motherboards lying around from your GPU mining days, setup a quick install of windows/linux and run your gridseeds off that.

Then once you've gotten this done, you need to create a couple scripts that will help you run the cpuminer instances.

first, called mine.bat:

Code:
echo on
miner-start.bat stratum+tcp://us-east.multipool.us:7777

The next one, called miner-start.bat. Note--if you are running more than 10 COM ports, you'll need to slightly modify the COM designation in the script from COM12 to \\.\COM12.

Code:
start C:\Users\zeetak\Desktop\cpuminer-GC3355-win32-fixed\minerd.exe  --freq=850 --gc3355=COM2 --url=%1 --userpass=zeetak.1:x
start C:\Users\zeetak\Desktop\cpuminer-GC3355-win32-fixed\minerd.exe  --freq=850 --gc3355=COM3 --url=%1 --userpass=zeetak.1:x
start C:\Users\zeetak\Desktop\cpuminer-GC3355-win32-fixed\minerd.exe  --freq=850 --gc3355=COM4 --url=%1 --userpass=zeetak.1:x
start C:\Users\zeetak\Desktop\cpuminer-GC3355-win32-fixed\minerd.exe  --freq=850 --gc3355=COM5 --url=%1 --userpass=zeetak.1:x
start C:\Users\zeetak\Desktop\cpuminer-GC3355-win32-fixed\minerd.exe  --freq=850 --gc3355=COM6 --url=%1 --userpass=zeetak.1:x
start C:\Users\zeetak\Desktop\cpuminer-GC3355-win32-fixed\minerd.exe  --freq=850 --gc3355=COM7 --url=%1 --userpass=zeetak.1:x
start C:\Users\zeetak\Desktop\cpuminer-GC3355-win32-fixed\minerd.exe  --freq=850 --gc3355=COM8 --url=%1 --userpass=zeetak.1:x
start C:\Users\zeetak\Desktop\cpuminer-GC3355-win32-fixed\minerd.exe  --freq=850 --gc3355=COM9 --url=%1 --userpass=zeetak.1:x
start C:\Users\zeetak\Desktop\cpuminer-GC3355-win32-fixed\minerd.exe  --freq=850 --gc3355=\\.\COM10 --url=%1 --userpass=zeetak.1:x
start C:\Users\zeetak\Desktop\cpuminer-GC3355-win32-fixed\minerd.exe  --freq=850 --gc3355=\\.\COM11 --url=%1 --userpass=zeetak.1:x

Now when you run mine.bat, you'll open up xx instances of minerd and will start hashing away. My next step is Windowskey-D to minimize everything, then maximize just the windows you need. As you can see, the amount of system resources it is using is hardly any, so it shouldn't be a problem to run 50 instances on your desktop:

Here are some things you’ll need if you just have the gridseeds but didn't get the kit:

wire to connect power:

VERY HELPFUL I forgot that batch file trick in passing the variable.

Also your hashrate looks a little slower that I had expected it to be, although I don't know whether you are running all 50 but 15Mh was what I would expect

Have you considered running it as a service?  Would certainly clean things up if you actually want to continue using that computer while mining! (not to mention you don't have to worry about when the computer crashes and/or reboots while you're away).  Smiley

That's a good idea. I am not much of a windows guru, so I'll have to look up how to do that.  Will there be a way to monitor random miners here and there if it's running as a service?

many many thanks for your quick "how to".
I'm actually waiting for my LA6M and was afraid to have some faulty controller comming with it.
wouldn't it be possible to use a standard atx psu with those barrel connectors? 12v should be equal but i've no clue about the rest.

Hello !

I know that Gridseed can mine only for scrypt based coins at the full speed.
Which particular coin worth to mine with Gridseed ? I mean to have at least ROI.

What is the exact part number of the usb hub you are using?

It looks like the hub that is supplied with accessories pack. I cannot find a pic of right now, I know it was in one of the support threads.

Edit- found it

He said they were anker hubs.  If you look at the picture it looks like all the plugs are in a line.

great works.
only one problem.lost hash rate. it should be 350Khs per usb miner.

I know that some people have contacted the user "cablez" to make them pci-e 6-pin adapters for barrel connectors.

The exact one I bought is here: http://www.amazon.com/Anker-Aluminum-13-Port-Charging-VL812-B2/dp/B00GSLMTQ8/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1394057871&sr=1-1&keywords=anker+13+port+hub

There are probably other good hubs out there, but I've always had good luck with Anker products.

You are right. I had a few units that weren't hashing, thanks for mentioning that! I looked and they were connected to bad cables. Now i'm running 49 units at 16,148 KH.  Is there any way to overclock these? Mine are running at 850mhz, and I heard that when people pushed them up to 900, the hashrate dropped. Perhaps a new firmware?

After a day of these units running I got sick of the noise of 49 small fans, so I disconnected the individual fans and pointed a box fan at them. Now they are running silently and are only slightly warm to the touch.  The only sound is the power supply fans kicking on every once in a while.

Also--it looks like somebody has gotten cgminer to work in LTC mode with BTC disabled so you don't need to run cpuminer. Here's the comment:

If you don't want to run a bunch of cpuminers, I have posted modified cgminer sources to allow LTC-only mode: https://github.com/dtbartle/cgminer-gc3355. I have this running on a Raspberry Pi with 10 devices.

What's your total power draw?

I don't have a kill-o-watt, but I'm estimating around 8 watts per unit, or 393 watts. Not bad for 16 MH scrypt mining, if I don't say so myself.

How hot is the room they are in or how hot do they run? I have 2 miners with 6 total 280x cards and it is hot as hell in that room. I might order 20 of these to start. What site did you order from? Thanks for the great infor

Well, it's not hot at all. I actually disconnected the wires that cool these little guys and they are still cool to the touch. In fact, I had to turn on the pellet stove just a few minutes ago because it's cold down here.  I don't miss the heat and noise created by GPU's, I can tell you that.  I ordered from Zoomhash.com, he is totally legit and very helpful.

Great info! Thanks. I just ordered one unit from Zoomhash a few days ago for testing before ordering more. I am looking at selling all my miners to buy some of these up. I have extra stuff from miners so I can do a stand along pc.

Sure. Initially I had the box fan on the top of the rack pointing down, but then it occurred to me that heat rises, so I'm basically fighting against physics. I moved it to the bottom blowing up and now more of them stay cool.

Thanks!!

Very nice! Is the Fan sufficient for the three-storage-high rack? The top are also cooled???

I ask you this because one of my Gridseeds came with a Fan that does a annoying noise....I am thinking of replacing it with a standard one...

If it worked for zeetak then it is good enough for me. waiting on ebay funds to clear and I have will have 20 to start. I have a similar rack also lol. Awesome setup zeetak.

The top ones are cooled currently. The bonus of having the fan wires disconnected on the miners is that you can just lay a box fan directly on them, and it'll probably work fine.

regards,

P.

If it worked for zeetak then it is good enough for me. waiting on ebay funds to clear and I have will have 20 to start. I have a similar rack also lol. Awesome setup zeetak.

Great job.  Could you  post a close-up picture that shows the AC connection of the psu and the connections of the Gridseed units to the psu?

Thanks in advance.

Sure.

I have this running on a Raspberry Pi with 10 devices.

what thread does this come from exactly?

I can't wait to order more for myself. Plan on doing a similar setup on windows 8.1 though.  Wonder how that will work.

Please post your results, as I haven't needed to setup Windows 8 yet, but I may in the future.

Is there a way to launch all 50 miners at once or am I going to have to create 50 different batch files for each miner? and do I have to create 50 different workers on 1 pool or can I just point them all at the same worker?

I think on the first page of this thread at the bottom someone mention a version of cgminer with a link.

I have 12 just need to hook them up I can't wait

The easiest way is to create a start-miner.bat file with this contents:

echo on
mine.bat stratum+tcp://[pool].com:[port]

Then create a second one called mine.bat with this info:

start C:\Users\username\Desktop\cpuminer-GC3355-win32-fixed\minerd.exe  --freq=850 --gc3355=COM1 --url=%1 --userpass=user.1:x
start C:\Users\username\Desktop\cpuminer-GC3355-win32-fixed\minerd.exe  --freq=850 --gc3355=COM2 --url=%1 --userpass=user.1:x

etc. This will launch a separate command window for each minerd process from a batch script. If you want to switch pools, just edit the start-miner.bat file and put in a new pool, instead of having to modify each line of your mine.bat file.

From the Alphatech website "Shipping is targeted for Q2/Q3 of Year 2014". We are still in the first quarter, so that is a 6 month window. I am happy with my 7MH/s Gridseed setup that is making me money now, not 3-6 months from now.

So just to be clear.  In LTC only mode these can run cool without bothering with all the power supply jumbo and just the powered usb hubs or did you only unplug the black fans on top of each unit?

Hello,

I have a quick noob question.

I am starting to use a few Gridseed units from Zoomhash. I have them plugged into a 10 port USB hub (Hoo too).

I loaded the virtual driver and cgminer (linked from Cryptomining). I can seem to get cgminer to see any of the Gridseeds, I can see them listed in the device manager as the virtual com port. I loaded the USB driver with Zadig . I changed the look time in cgminer from 0 to 5. Still no go. Plugged and unplugged usb port after cgis running also..

I then set everything back to default drivers and loaded Bfgminer, and it works from there, and suggestion what cgminer is doing different?

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Great setup. I have 23 running on one instance of cgminer. The ui hangs up though. Still mines but no data. Here comes the noob question. How do you setup several instances of cgminer for your gridseeds?

How do you stop and restart them if using cpuminer with that many instances?

Is there a way to kill all the processes with one batch file or command? What I do, if I want to switch pools is to CTRL-C each instance, then I rerun the mine.bat file.

Code:
cgminer --scrypt --gridseed-freq  8D7415695554=975,6D8213764857=825,8D98206C4849=875,8D8B46874955=1150 --gridseed-options=baud=115200,freq=750,chips=5 --hotplug 5 --scan-time 1 --queue 4 --no-submit-stale

pause

This let's you specify each and every miner independently, with default  speed of 750 in this example.

This will let you specify exactly what speed to run that way you can minimize HW errors.

Oh, this only works on cgminer 3.7.2 (https://www.google.com/search?q=cgminer+3.7.2&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-US:IE-Address&ie=&oe=)
