About piCoin piCoin is a new cryptocurrency based off of the original coin from mid-2013, but this time with a fair and optimized distribution and a strong backing from experienced marketers, businessmen, crypto nerds, and math geeks. We've set out with a plan to not only spread piCoin far and wide, but to help spread cryptocurrency throughout the math community. Cryptocurrencies are clearly a very math-oriented concept, but we have yet to see them catch on to a large degree among the communities of mathematicians, math teachers, math enthusiasts, and every student in the world taking a math course. Many programmers and developers are passionate about cryptocurrencies - our goal is to extend this ardor to everyone with a love for math. piCoin will expand past its Internet roots and develop an offline presence as piCoin is promoted at various offline events, including but not limited to math conventions, conferences, universities, and schools. We've hired paid marketing consultants from all over the world (specifically in the US, Europe, China, Korea, and India) in order to assist in the globalization of piCoin. As piCoin grows, opportunities for charitable efforts will arise; math scholarships, education for those in need, and even funding a school in a third world country are all distinct possibilities down the road. Nice idea, but that is one heck of a lot of coins.
I've been wondering this for a while and guess I may as well ask it here but what is your rationale/thinking behind the number of coins?
To be clear I don't mean the exact number, I realise that is using pi, but why did you go for 31 billion? Why not 31 million for example?

Thanks, we agree! Nice idea, but that is one heck of a lot of coins.

There are nearly 8 billion people in the world right now. If a coin becomes very popular, having more total coins is beneficial in our mind. There are so many more people in cryptocurrencies these days that coins with higher totals make more sense than they used to a couple of years ago. We decided on around 31 billion because it's a good amount which allows people to hold bigger numbers, without things getting too crazy. Owning 10,000 of something is more appealing than owning 1,000 of something for most people - it's basic human psychology. There are some coins with 1+ trillion max coins and we think that is a little much - but 31 billion is a good solid, number for a coin like this in our opinion. Also, most people who practice for a few minutes can get up to about eleven digits of pi - we wanted to pick the highest reasonable number we could that normal people could still memorize without two much trouble.

First of all, that is not the first "pi coin." The first one was back in mid-2013, on CryptoCoinTalk. It didn't have much of a following, due to the unfair launch of launching it on a secondary forum. It died quickly after launch. Our coin is based of of this coin.
Secondly, the SHA-256 coin launched in January also died quickly after launch. The fact that now that there is a very competent team creating a coin called piCoin with an actual usable number of coins (do you really expect a currency with only 3.14 total coins to ever have actual use?) appears to have made some people feel like they're being left out and decide to resurrect a dead coin from 2 months ago. By the way, the real pi is always lowercase.
People can make their pick.
piCoin (this one): launches on Pi Day, great wallet design according to the many positive responses we have received, way better logo, better website which will be launching over the next few days, small premine, strong team of 5+ people, KGW to prevent multipool dumping, and a usable number of coins. Based off of the original piCoin from mid-2013.
PI Coin (the coin you linked to): 1.9 % premine, dead since launch, not even the first "pi coin" but claims to be the first, self moderated thread, not enough coins to ever achieve a decent following, questionable theories and goals, instamined due to a non pre-announced relaunch, and likely sockpuppet accounts making false statements on the other coin's unmoderated thread.
