That's why we have Report to moderator button. If you think a post is spam, report it. People rarely report posts, that's main problem.

So this button can be used on a daily basis? I never use it unless it is offensive and spam...
That is exactly what that button is for , you hit it when you feel some post is offensive or spam, i don't know if you were trying to be sarcastic ..!

The root of the problem is people spamming for higher payout from sig ads. What I suggest is to build a spammer list and anyone on that list must not be accepted into any sig ad campaigns.

How we build that list is debatable, but we can start with member marking spams posts with a spam button as suggested. Moderators can review the posts that member writes in a 2 week period. If spamming is consistent, give a warning. If warning is ignored, add the member onto the list for a set period, let's say a month.

Mods can also add a new 'Spammer' member group where no sigs are allowed and posting delay of 6 minutes, for all time king of spam  Cheesy

Layer after layer of fiddly and irritating rules, and the spammers will just create new accounts.

Considering how long it takes to get to the account level needed to earn anything decent.  I don't see it being an issue.  Leopards don't change their spots either, so I'm sure by the time they get to that level they will already have earned spammer status again.

I have a simple suggestion for the forum to help stop spamming as mentioned in this topic. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=484259

My idea is to simply have a button next to the "Report to Moderator" that says "Mark as Spam". If more than 5 Sr.Member or higher click that button, the posts "hides". People have the option of viewing the post, but that post does not count towards the users post count.

It does make sense, and I like the idea.  I really don't know a lot about these boards, but is it even something that can be implemented?

I'm not a fan of the new sig rules to try to curb spam as it hurts people like me who try to make constructive posts without spamming.  I think there should also be a penalty added to this system as well.  After so many "hides" the person receives a warning, suspension, etc.  However it works around here when it comes to penalties.

The only concern I see is that it could be abused. Obviously if it's SR. members and higher the chance would be a lot less for abuse, but its still a possibility.  It's a step in the right direction I think, and far better than the current solution.

If it does get abused, it could be changed to only hero members...

Sounds great in theory but it'll be almost certainly abused. You don't like that guys post? *mark as spam*. This guy is posting a lot but has a sig deal *mark as spam*. Limiting it to higher members won't really matter either.

The abuse is going to come from any membership level regardless of what you set it at. There are people childish enough on this forum to abuse such a function to have a post of another person they despise enough being hidden. This is more so for the people who are rather stubborn on their views and radical (there are quite a few of these people around) which would see these peoples opinions be hidden. As much as I dislike some of the crap that these people post it isn't spam.

Exactly.

A simpler solution would just to use the report to moderator button or implement a report as spam/off-topic one. Maybe they could go to different moderators who will look out for this.

How about a "hide" trust system? You could add people whose judgement you trust to your list, and any posts they've hidden would be hidden for you too.

Really? Is there anyone you trust 100% on matters like this? If someone gets into a petty personal spat then their post(s) should be hidden from you too?

As always, even after thousands of threads and hundreds of thousands of responses about spamming "the board" all over the internet, the answer is: you cannot stop spammers without draconian measures. The best measures that help? Ignore the people who irritate you (you dogooders know who you are), and hit "Report to Moderator" and let them take care of it.

The alternative is ~another~ couple of hundred posts. To save you all some time, I'll list them all here:

1) Ban paid .sigs, and punish everyone.
2) No, don't punish everyone.
3) Hey, I've got a "novel" idea (insert idea that has been suggested 1000s of times before, here)!
4 That won't work because (insert reason that has used to respond to 3, 1000s of times before, here).
5) Suggestion (used 1000s of times before) to modify the swell idea in 3.
5a) Possibly 4, to comment on 5 (1000s blah, blah).
6) Well, I just think some version of 1 or 2.
6a) Comment about how some people ruin it for everyone.
7) Well, I just think some slightly different of 1 or 2.
7a) Find common ground with 6a.
8 ) Repeat 3-7a, endlessly, until 8a or 9.
8a) Discussion gets heated (the dogooders can't fathom that anyone can't see the wisdom of their ideas), then 9a.
9) Someone: GOTO 1.
9a) Helpfully start new thread becuase, this time, THIS TIME, the answer will be found!, then 9.

These aren't spam posts "because, of course."

Now you guys can just post your numbered responses, though with 3 or 4, you have to insert a few words, e.g., "4 some people will cheat."

'Nuff said.  8^]

I like your original idea, and I also like the idea of having it only work for Hero members, ( perhaps sr members )?
If it was available to everyone it would -surely- get abused. I want to see the old signatures back, or perhaps another rework.
This solution should solve spamming, at least a lot better than just lowering whatever payment the newbies get for shitposting.

most forums have an ignore button but I dont see that here.   If anyone is getting alot of ignores it could put them on a short list for mods and/or to forward to the AD company, purely in self interest this system could self regulate

I've never been much of a person who reports spam, but i did the first time earlier because I feel the spammers are screwing it up for the rest of us who are being "punished" so to speak.

I noticed that when I went to report it said something like "0 reports with 0% accuracy" or something close to that and it asked you to submit a reason before hitting ok.  So a few minutes ago I hit report just to see and it said something like 1 reported with 100% accuracy.  To me right there, that is almost self moderation for using the report feature.

I can't really see people reporting just for the sake of reporting if you have a crappy accuracy rating.  I'm sure the mods could even set it so if your accuracy rating dips below a certain level, you can no longer report.

I know going forward I will be taking more of an active roll in reporting. Not just for the sake of reporting, but to keep my accuracy level at 100% while hopefully lowering the spam around here.

I agree to this and like your opinion, but considering the fact that this place isn't really changing fast,I doubt this will be implemented in less than a year or two.
