Hello,

Long story short, I got default_wallet, unecrypted so funds can be easily seen in the wallet as available. So far so so good,

However wallet is protected by password, meaning that if you want to transfer funds to another address it requires password, or if you want to see private key for an address it requires pass, etc.. you get the picture.

The password hints are unknown, the only hint is that the password is no longer than 12 chars, mixed.

Before I even offer anyone the job, can anyone explain if the electrum password can be brute forced?

The pay-out for the job is 100 btc, anyone who will get hired will need to crack upfront an electrum password created by me where I input a random amount of btc, for example 0.5 btc, that he can keep upon password crack as a reward, however the biggest reward is that once he finds out what the password is for this test amount, he can reply to me with the password as a proof that he has the means to actually crack an electrum password and not wasting my time. At that point that person will be hired for the 100 btc job.

I am waiting your thoughts and opinions on electrum password cracking, is this even a viable option? Or am I wasting my time?

Thanks

The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

Well, since your are talking about a password and not the seed, it would depend how you generated your password. If you used a password manager, it will probably be a tough nut to crack. However, if you used only your mind, it may be possible to crack via brute force. Unfortunately, I am not very technically adept, so I won't be able to assist you further.

If you know few parts of the password you can recover it using the BTCrecovery tool this is mostly used if you can remember some parts of the seed or password.

Check this link https://github.com/gurnec/btcrecover

However, if you can't remember most of your password or seeds you will never recover it using this tool.

where did you get this wallet? is it yours? if yes then how come you have no idea what the password was?

you should at the very least provide length of the password so that it can be assessed whether it is possible to attempt a brute force or not. for example if it has 6-7 mixed characters then it will simply cost a lot more than 100BTC to attempt brute forcing it without any guarantee of success! and if it is 12 then asking for brute force is just silly...

It seems that these days many offer rewards from 100 BTC for recovery or cracking passwords, is this thread have something with this : HUGE PROBLEM, LOST MASSIVE AMOUNT OF BTC. 100 BTC is Reward ?

There is such a kind of fraud where some smart guys sell bitcoin wallets with huge amounts of BTC, only problem is that wallet is password protected. I am not sure is OP have one of such wallet, but in any case cracking such password with today's technology would take a bit too long...

@OP, I think it's probably best to consider those funds as good as gone.

Unless you can offer a hint as to the password you used to encrypt the wallet file as you make it sound as if that one was encrypted with a different password and you decrypted that...

However, clearly the bitcoins you have in that wallet aren't so important to you otherwise you would have WRITTEN DOWN THE SEED.

It is also possible, if you can get access to a master public key and one of your private keys to gain access to the rest of the keys in your wallet, maybe that should be explored?
