I’m brand new to crypto. I made my first purchase yesterday on an exchange, and then sent it to breadwallet on my iPhone. The transfer was going fine, a little slow, but I understand it’s the whole bitcoin network is a bit overloaded at the moment. My wallet was syncing, and once it reached the end of the sync, the program closed and when I reopened it, my balance was gone, as well as my transaction history. Breadwallet support says this is a known issue, and I’ve deleted the app and am in the middle of a re-sync. They also said that they’re “releasing a beta that should fix the problem, and will email me when it is available.” What the fuck is happening? Is my money just gone?

Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

You can recover the funds if you’ve written down the seed.

There are alternatives to recover the wallet while waiting for the beta however, I think you should wait for the beta as that will be more secure.

If you have the address, you can check if it still has the balance before recovering it too on any block explorer, such as blockchain.com or btc.com (if the address begins with a bc1 it won’t show up on blockchain.com though).

After synching, try to manage your wallets (the original wallet). I think it need some refreshment after synching. Don't have an IOS so I can't provide you a screenshots.

Also as stated above, as long as you have backed up your wallet, it's not lost. Try also to checked the receiving address you used as mentioned above for your assurance that you really hold the funds.

The statement to you by Breadwallet support is the supposed fix for that kind of errors and not how to recover your funds if you will do it now, I guessed.

Any other details given by them?

The fact that your transaction history disappeared too, means that there is a syncing/network issue.

If you have your recovery phrase, your BTC are NOT lost.

You can verify this (if you still know the address) by visiting a blockchain explorer [1]. Enter your address and you'll see how much BTC are associated with it.

Breadwallet does support BIP32 / BIP39. This means you can import your mnemonic code phrase into any other compatible wallet (e.g. electrum for desktop).
You'll be able to see and access your coins there if you don't want to wait for an update of breadwallet.

Also, please make sure to never store more money on your mobile than you would carry around in your pocket.
