We've streamlined our processes, and Cyrus has put together a team for handling these cases, so account recoveries should now be handled at a reasonable pace again. Additionally, we will be somewhat more lenient in recovering accounts without signatures, though signatures often will still be required, depending on the situation. If you have a locked account, send a new email to the @bitcointalk.org email address given in your "account locked" error message. (The email address changed a few weeks ago.) If you were previously sending messages to me or Cyrus, send a new email to the address here. We might try to go through the backlog of old-process recoveries in the future, but for now you should send new messages. Sorry for the delay!

Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

This is indeed a welcome development ad simply goes go show that you're really putting in effort to make the forum a better place and more accommodating for every user. What most users must understand is that a change in the system takes time to implement as numerous factors would have to be put into considerations, this has really been a long time coming, but it's better late than never. Good work theymos!

Thanks admin, eventually you have proved again that you care about us. Its a great decision to recover old account before implement to new recovery system. Really it was most important subject since we meet the merit system. I don't know why there is security question if not possible recover account by this. Only for lock account ? If that then hacker can change question after change password. Because many account locked by security question. However thanks again for this step and waiting for new recovery system. And any update about reporter badge? Or it will be new year gift ? . Its long time you have made post about reporter badge. It might help keep forum more spam free because people will encourage to report spam post.

I have something in my mind and I want to be reassured: If the owner of a locked account send an appeal from a new email, will you unlock his account?
edit: the user provides a signed message.

I believe it would depend on whether or not the user has a signed message, there has to be something with which to prove that you indeed owned that account. It is very thoughtful of the admin to be lenient and consider accounts without signatures. Every user however should endeavour to sign a message as soon as they can.

I was having a feeling that something is going on when I saw this post ( Recovering hacked/lost accounts) earlier today. A bit off topic (not sure): How about the script you were writing we heard from the PM of one of the member (qwk i guess)?

Not sure what you're referring to. One thing I'm working on (maybe for release in the first half of 2019, not sure) is a proper address-staking system. The main point of this would be to replace the current ad hoc address staking situation and safely allow opting out of any of: long-term IP log retention; email password recoveries; or manual recoveries. Automatic recoveries using a staked address is possible, but not much on my mind right now. I have something in my mind and I want to be reassured: If the owner of a locked account send an appeal from a new email, will you unlock his account?
edit: the user provides a signed message.
If a signature is provided, probably. But each case needs to be considered separately.

If a signature is provided, probably. But each case needs to be considered separately. You know that there are many appeal-threads where users already provided their signed message. The hacker will simply create a new email and copy paste the signed message. I don't know if what I said make sense but it would be better to only accept appeals from the original email the user used to register or to accept only newly signed messages.

That's why signed messages for account recoveries have to include the desired new email and a date.

Here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4864633.msg43837185#msg43837185We don't actually accept the profile field address unless there's some sort of proof that it's remained unchanged, for that very reason.
I'm working on a new address-staking system which will automatically handle signatures, etc. Might have it ready by the end of the month if nothing else comes up to consume my time. Good to hear another new possible date by the way (maybe for release in the first half of 2019, not sure)

I was trying to translate the OP ( https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5089777.0) for my local board, since it's an important topic for all to see, but I'm having issues when trying to include the recovery email in a forum post: A trimmed version of the email appears on screen when previewing the post: recoveries...@bitcointalk.org (recoveries_2019_ t727d@bitcointalk.org -> with a space just to be able to post it here). Any idea why it trims characters? (it seems to interpret the email and does something weird with it, whilst the OP does not have that issue). Thanks.

Rather than copying the email address, please just say "the email address in theymos's post" or similar. These email addresses will be periodically cycled, so if you copy it, it'll stop working eventually. Thanks.

Thank you Santa theymos. It's a great Christmas gift to forum users. I believe that many of hacked users already lost hope to get account back, so these news is like a miracle for them. I read your post in new pinned thread and I want to ask, is it there are something new about bans? Your ban message may have an email address which you can email. If not, then the ban cannot be appealed. It means that email address are shown not for all banned users and they don't have right to appeal? Or this ban appeal email aren't shown just for temporrary banned users?

Apparently, it is a security option to make it difficult to copy and past and require the link to the original post. I translated to Portuguese the two posts for account recovery. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5089888

That's a good thing to hear.
Indeed the number of people affected was small, but it was a bit terrifying how impossible it seemed for anyone to get their new account back. Even when you had everything you needed to prove it was indeed your account...

Also, its good too see that some of the suggestions are heard and worked upon by the form administration. Keep up the good work Theymos .

Your ban message may have an email address which you can email. If not, then the ban cannot be appealed Am I right assuming that appeal threads in Meta are also prohibited for permabanned users now? Check that the email isn't ending up in your spam folder And that e-mail provider doesn't filter it. Some providers don't allow users to reveive the e-mails from bitcointalk.org if forum wasn't manually whitelisted.

Looks good dedication of the forum admin to help users who got troubles with their accounts.
I have a question, "If someone got their account locked, and they can not access their email [something like forget their email address and/ or email password], are there chances for them to get their account back (unlock)? I guess that the answer is "NO", but it's good if I can get confirmation of theymos. If the answer is truly NO, it is really important to have fully backup of both bitcointalk account and email (address, password)
In the worst case, something like what happened with yahoo email, are there solutions in those cases?
The forum has come closer to its one year anniversary for the merit system, which launched on 24/01/2018, Dutch time. Around one more month till the 24/01/2019.

No. I changed it to "Your ban message may have an email address which you can email. If not, then appeals are unlikely to be accepted." I don't want to so blatantly encourage people to "appeal by making a topic in Meta" because that's just a ridiculous process, especially since it so rarely works.

But practice shows that we can't divine every single incident. Sometimes people describe the situation and it really looks like some mistake took place (or whatever) but these ridiculous threads are the only thing they can do. At least I can recommend them to try in such a case.

Patiently waiting for the new software to be rolled out and probably be able to safeguard our accounts. It has been so much of a pain. I personally lost a full member account that did not have any staked address just because someone was able to change the password and email within one minute.

Not to sound like a (possible?) broken record, but will this site ever support any kind of 2FA? Thanks! theymos is working on that #THEnewForumSoftware. Anyway, like Loyce I am also seeing some movements. December 27, 2018, 04:25:01 PM - Haymac - manual recovery, previously-queued ownership change completed December 24, 2018, 03:25:01 PM - EnricoS - manual recovery, previously-queued ownership change completed December 21, 2018, 09:25:01 PM - pooya87 - manual recovery, previously-queued ownership change completed December 20, 2018, 03:50:23 PM - Haymac - manual recovery, ownership change queued (completed) December 17, 2018, 03:06:02 PM - EnricoS - manual recovery, ownership change queued (completed) December 14, 2018, 05:38:26 AM - pooya87 - manual recovery, ownership change queued (completed) I would have expected more entries. At-least we are moving

I think it means if you're banned for something like 50 pages of "great project soan" there's no point giving them an email they were banned for. Or maybe it's if they were permabanned previously and clearly shouldn't be allowed to appeal it. I'm glad these are back working, if someone uses a good password and their passwords are stored correctly on the forum and email account then a hack should be very unlikely but it's good to see theymos is doing something for those who did fall victim to having their password harvested.

No response received till date. Any idea how long it might take? Since the new method was in place, have anyone successfully recovered their account till date?

All we know is that account recoveries are moving , but we don't know exactly at what speed they are going. Just be patient, and if you've provided all the required information needed then it will be recovered eventually.

Your account was banned for life for plagiarism so I doubt you'll be getting it back. You are evading your ban as well by posting outside of Meta.

All we know is that account recoveries are moving , but we don't know exactly at what speed they are going. Just be patient, and if you've provided all the required information needed then it will be recovered eventually. I received the following mail. Hello,
Thank you for your email. The signed message was successfully verified. Please note that the email address cannot be restored to a different one other than the original used to register the account. In the situation where that email address was used to create a different account, you will need to change it on the second account as one email address cannot be linked with more than one acount.
Furthermore, we will need you to send us an email from that original email address where you wil also receive further instructions. Best regards, Bitcointalk account recovery team
But, I do not remember the original email ID with which my account was registered 5 years ago. Though, I have provided signed message from an address, that was used within one month of account registration. What am I supposed to do?

It seems that you have no choice but to remember the original email ID with which your account was registered.

If they are telling you that you require the original email address then you require the original email address. You can send an email back to see if there's any possibility of proving otherwise, but it seems that the prerequisites are pretty strict in account recoveries. Unfortunately, I imagine the majority of people trying to recover their accounts would have lost their original email address especially if it was made a a few years ago.

Exactly one month ago I sent them an email with the signed message. They asked me to email from the email I used to lock the account. I explained them the situation -
1. Yop mail is open access email. That's why I changed the email but random person clicked the link & my account got locked.
2. I signed a message from an unedited address from over 2 years ago. I didn't change the password as well. so it's clear account is not hacked.
3. I am surprised that people who are in charge don't even know how yopmail works.
they replied to me twice but after I explained the situation they are not replying again. I just feel bad that they don't care about their users.

Hi Theymos and all the team just a message to say : Thanks you , after many mounth without acess, your new process have help me to recover my account ! i'm very happy for that i have try to send some merit to all people who have support me during this year and half but unfortunatly ihave 0smerit to send have a good day

My account was also hacked in past, but I was very lucky to get it back just in few days. Did hacker wasted all of your sMerits? It sucks, but I hope you will earn some Merits eventually. Good luck!

Most likely, yes. Was your account hacked? As explained by theymos: If your account was hacked
Email recoveries_2019_t727d (at) bitcointalk.org, ideally from the account's email address. Include your username and a brief description of the details of how/when the account was hacked. A signature will likely be required (see below).

Go to Security log, press Ctrl + F and search for "manual recovery"; Every result is an hacked/lost account being recovered.

I was able to scrap some data about the recovery of accounts from the security log. This is just limited to results from December 17 2018 to Jan 19 2019. 11 accounts from the manual recovery queue are recovered successfully.
1. miKnutty2. s1ng3. copyable4. MemberCount+15. knobson6. zzaza7. JeromeTash8. shidayat89. feryjhie10. Haymac11. EnricoS
This seems a very good upgrade in number if you compare it with the previous solved account recovery cases before the update by theymos was applied.

Yes, I don't find your. I think it is still in the queue as the amount of recovery cases are pretty much. I would like to suggest @theymos to add some log about the recovery queues and also an indicator to phase of recovery of the account. Which will make it easy for people to track there account recovery process.

Account Ranyar was hacked and i lock it via BCT e-mail. Here is thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4907272.new#new

what about the blocked account whether it will be easy to appeal because my experience was never a reply from the email listed on a blocked account. even though we really feel we didn't make mistakes. it's just that the problem is an appeal that is difficult to get an answer

I am waiting since June 2018 for a recovery for my account KlaaasA mail was send out a week ago +- but still no response. Any suggestions ? Yea My account Tom14cat14 was hacked around Dec 2017. Since I never posted address they never would help. Even though I was part of numerous Alt coin dev teams where I was the OP and have access to all of the accounts like twitter or FB to linked accounts from the history. Not to mention I did proof of developer for 3 coins. Anytime spent looks and you can see it was my account for many years and everything is connected. I sent new email but I doubt it will work. The current person seams to post once in a topic a few topics a day. I just hate seeing the bad guys win

Can anyone share the actual process of account recovery? I mean the steps from admin's end. I applied for my account recovery on 10th Jan and I received a reply on 18th Jan with a link to click on. And since then no reply, no sign of account recovery. I was very happy when I received that email but at the end > So I'm wondering how the process exactly worked with those who got their account back. Actually, now I'm very impatient about getting my account back after the recovery process restarted.

I want to report that I finally was able to recover my account AvenG, thanks @theymos and @cyrus for making the Recovery Team available to us. Can anyone share the actual process of account recovery? I mean the steps from admin's end.
~trig~
So I'm wondering how the process exactly worked with those who got their account back. Not sure how did you lost your account, however here is how I was able to do it. I documented the whole process, hope my case serves you as an example to make you feel less impatient.

cryptonator.com address and there you can not sign a message with btc address. May I, in the form of a certificate from the address 1PmQKhEvratCxy ........ transfer to you, the minimum amount of btc in the form of proof that I made this post on a hacked account.
