It's not really about which coin is where. ETH, XRP and BTC aren't direct competitors with one another, they each offer different things.
As to whether XRP can hit number one in market cap, I think it's possible but a long way (years) off.
For now and at least the medium-term future, BTC will dominate crypto and will have a huge effect on altcoin prices.

Ripple has no chance of getting around Bitcoin from any side. The fact that ripple temporarily ranked second in terms of capitalization does not mean anything.
