I don't have the time to look into the details, but it always makes me curious why one user increased so much, and the other didn't. Maybe someone improved their posts a lot, maybe someone just became much more active. Or maybe "being well known" really makes it easier to earn Merit.

Looks like a very high number of recently most merited users gained most of their Merit in 2019 like fillippone, nutildah or mikeywith and even myself. I remember mikeywith was saying the first few months he was reading most of the time, same goes for fillippone AFAIK. And that applies even for myself, 80% of my Merit was earned in 2019.

Maybe that's stuff for a new study. 

And it took around 5 weeks for fillippone to pass all of us, called flippening (word is derived from fillippone?)

All reasons mentioned by you are Loycev make a lot of sense, but based on my personal experience it's mostly "where" you post that makes the big difference, if i take myself as an example, and for the past a few months, I started being most active in my local board, we only have 2 merit sources and their merit allocation is relatively low, I know I could earn more merit in B&H and Meta or even the WO thread since I do a lot of technical analysis,but honestly I don't like forcing myself to post in places where I don't feel like it, when I started being active in my local board it was almost a dead town there, I have been working for months on it, along side with a few members and we now have a much larger community and much better content, and honestly being in top 15 or even top 50 most merited members while being relatively new here ( i am barley known ) puts me in a comfort zone as far as merit is concerned, which is great , I get to focus on improving my local board , but don't get so comfortable miaw because when i feel the heat , guess I already know how to get those merit  .
