if all of you are moaning about him saying its effectively 0. atleast do some maths
7billion people=100% 700million=10% 70million=1%
so he is probably right, there is effectively under 1% using bitcoin.
but then again UK is only 1% and thats a whole country that is meant to be a first world country.
so dont let it get you down. the pound has been around well over a century to get that far. they are even relaxing immigration to rules to get more people using pounds, but we all know bitcoin can exceed british pound users in just a few years as there is no rules keeping people away.
I agree. Bitcoin is still far from mainstream. There's only about 300k - 2million users around. We have a long way to go but the snowball has already started rolling. We shouldn't shove Bitcoin into people's faces. Just wait and let them get into it on their own. They will surely stick around longer if they do it on their own.

Wikipedia is a CIA front. It includes lots of trivia, sports results, celebrity biographies etc., which are factual, mixed up with falsified historical events/fake terror events passed off as a fact. It's part of the Pentagon's mindgame trickery. I suggest reading the work of Professor Carroll Quigley, Scottish radio show host Alan Watt, and the media fakery site Cluesforum.info, to understand this better. No insults please. It's up to you, to inform yourself. I promise you that you'll find these sources highly enlightening (unless of course you think you know everything already).
Wales is extremely dishonest.

From what I gather from his comments, Jimmy Wales appears to be an ungrateful asshole.
Give Jimmy some time and the respect he deserves - he has already given so much to the online community. Wikipedia is a CIA front. It includes lots of trivia, sports results, celebrity biographies etc., which are factual, mixed up with falsified historical events/fake terror events passed off as a fact. Such as? There's probably more valid sources on wiki than there is on some conspiracy forum.

Agreed! This about JW might be true. But it isn't evident from his statement at the beginning of this thread. Rather, he is simply being practical. For example. At the height of the Bitcoin flurry, when China surpassed MtGox in volume, when they were going strong before they dropped more or less out of the picture, Bitcoin moved about as much in that whole month as the Forex does in $dollars in one day. In the scheme of things, Bitcoin is nothing. To Bitcoiners, it might mean almost everything. That's all Jimmy Wales meant. It has nothing to do with his likes or dislikes of Bitcoin. One thing granted. If everything in the world and finance continues on, basically as it is going right now, Bitcoin has the chance of dramatically changing the world way more than any Forex fiat currency.

Professor Carroll Quigley was one of the most respected people to ever study "secret societies". From what I gather from his comments, Jimmy Wales appears to be an ungrateful asshole.

WTF are you smoking? I even gave you the benefit of the doubt and didn't find anything about Carroll Quigley, the CIA and Wikipedia & didn't find any legitimate source. Tragedy & Hope: A History of the World in Our Time Carroll Quigley was an American historian and theorist of the evolution of civilizations. He is noted for his teaching work as a professor at Georgetown University, for his academic publications, and for his research on secret societies. http://www.amazon.com/Tragedy-Hope-History-World-Time/dp/094500110X

Keep in mind that Jimmy Wales knows alot about internet advertising. Specifically he knows about placing small advertisements across thousands of web pages. The internet venture that I remember of his was Boomis from 1996 until before Wikipedia. That involved groups of websites joining and advertising things with Boomis taking a cut - or something like that. Certainly his decision is the "right" one for Wikipedia today. However, the day will come when things will change... From wikiquote: "Bomis was a dot-com company founded in 1996 by Jimmy Wales, Tim Shell and Michael Davis. Its primary business was the sale of advertising on the Bomis.com search portal...." "Bomis created and hosted web rings around search terms popular among male users. It included "Bomis Babes", which was a segment devoted to erotic images." " http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Bomis

Man, five years slumming there and I didn't even realize I was under the CIA's payroll. On the plus side, CIA pays well, so I can look forward to a gratuity/pension. Right? Must share this news with the other editors. Oh much joy, so happiness! Seriously though, is it still fashionable to use fringe conspiracy theories as a tool to discredit major political and thought leaders? And do you realize statements like yours is disrespectful to the character of thousands of volunteer editors who spend their free hours there daily for no other reason than to create the biggest tome of knowledge in the entire history of humanity?

Pot, kettle, except you can't take it and only try to dish out I ain't exactly big on anonymity Feel free to mess with people - just don't be surprised when they go out of their way to find you for it Are you just that simple, or just ignorant about how you behave? Sad that so many are turning into bitchy little kids when they should know better. I expect better returns from a minor.

Just like Wikipedia's initial funding came from Porn portals through Bomis, Bitcoin hit the world for all bad reason - Silk Road. But the way Mr. Wales is now treating Bitcoin, only implies Wikipedia is treated as a Porn portal !!! Insane... He can has paypal on donation page, but NOT Bitcoin !!!

Wikipedia foundation has 60 million USD in its vaults and is every year adding 15-20 million USD NET to their stack, but... they still ask for your money to run the website. And guess what, the server part, is just around 10% of their costs. You guessed which one comes first: employees

You can't honestly expect Wikipedia to put a BTC donation address on the bottom of every page. Even this forum doesn't do that. Instead, this forum has a "DONATE" button in the top menu -- similar to how Wikipedia has a "Donate to Wikipedia" link on the left navigation pane. I'd be happy with a Bitcoin address on that donation landing page. Ahh, a voice of reason in a sea of hysteria. Thank you.

He is new to all this and needs guidance - when many of us here first got into Bitcoin it took a while to wrap our heads around the concepts involved. Give him a chance, it's been said that Bitcoin is the spiritual cousin to Wikipedia so it shouldn't take a smart man like Jimmy long to fully comprehend what all the fuss is about.
Some men are not too smart, maybe he's one of them. He appears to be both ungrateful and arrogant. I'm surprised he even managed to get involved with something like Wikipedia when he clearly lacks vision. 'Need help and guidance'. Would it be too much to ask to ask him to read the whitepaper, the wiki entry and to educate himself? Jimmy Wales or not - bitcoin does not need Wikipedia to succeed. Mark my words, one day they will have Bitcoin as a donation option, because they simply can't ignore it anymore.

Let me get this straight. 1. Jimmy Wales states that Bitcoin is used by virtually zero persons, and has virtually zero value. 2. He has just received about 13K Dollars worth of btc without even asking for it: https://blockchain.info/address/1McNsCTN26zkBSHs9fsgUHHy8u5S1PY5q33. Currently Bitcon has about the same market share as WU: http://www.coinometrics.com/bitcoin/btix4. The market share of Bitcoin is about half that of Paypal. So Paypal being a centralized payment solution unavailable and crippled in several countries, known for treating customers like shit and confiscating and freezing funds seemingly random is okay, but a decentralized bleeding edge crypto currency solution like Bitcoin which requires virtually no effort to set up and poses no risk at all, you could even convert instantly to USD if you so desired, or you could contribute to the bitcoin ecosystem by paying volunteers with bitcoin, and even paying for hosting and a multitude of other things, is not okay? Jimmy Wales stated that accepting Bitcoin donations would not help Wikipedia, but would help Bitcoin. Does this man have a brain at all? Does he not see the development and where it's going? He can't envision were we will be in 2 years, in 5 years? The internet archive has the right attitude: http://archive.org/donate/bitcoin.phpThey said that they would be happy for any amount, so I sent them a small amount of btc. Wikipedia got nothing from me, and neither did they get anything in the past. If they accept bitcoin, they might get some. Even a tiny link at the donation page with a bitcoin option would be better than nothing. It would cost them exactly zero to set up, and the potential upside is huge. The fears of having people confused if there's more donation options is just plain silly. Heck, it could just even be a single bitcoin address in very small letters at the very bottom of the donation page, and nobody would even care about what it was except from bitcoiners. Because of Jimmy Wales being hot headed, arrogant, ungrateful, stupid and lacking vision of the future. I hereby give him this:
