Hi everybody

I am relatively new to mining and currently trying to choose the graphic cards for the rig I am building.

I bought 2 cards:

Asus RX 580 Dual OC 8GB

https://www.amazon.com/Radeon-Dual-Fan-GDDR5-Graphics-DUAL-RX580-O8G/dp/B071L1VGQW/ref=sr_1_4?crid=A2JV0A1RB8H4&keywords=asus+rx+580+8gb&qid=1555061965&s=gateway&sprefix=asus+rx+580%2Caps%2C203&sr=8-4

PowerColor RED Dragon RX 580 8GB

https://www.amazon.com/PowerColor-580-DisplayPort-AXRX-8GBD5-3DHDV2/dp/B0711QH8ZS/ref=sr_1_2?crid=PMY9149Q3QAC&keywords=powercolor+rx+580+8gb+red+dragon&qid=1555062077&s=gateway&sprefix=powercolor+rx+580%2Caps%2C201&sr=8-2

Then I just installed hive OS and let both cards run with the claymore miner (ETH only). I did not make any configuration changes or optimization. I just plugged them in and let them run as they arrived.

The ASUS (which is significantly more expensive) performs ~24 Mh/s at 140 W.
The Powercolor performs ~27 Mh/s at 120 W.

My question is now: What does that mean ?

Is the Powercolor card generally better for mining purposes than the ASUS (because its already better on default) ?
Or is this just a matter of settings ?
Does the Hashrate only depend on the chip and its core clock or can the rest of the card also affect the mining performance ?
should it be possible to get the same hash rate out of every RX580 or can one RX580 just be better for mining than an other one ?
Can somebody share experiences with the both cards I just mentioned ?

Thank you in advance

Mario

Power Color is considered a weak brand by many IT professionals compared to ASUS and other major brands ,I don't know about mining since I have never used a Power Color product although working as an IT support specialist but I think it is because of the different settings.

Once you overclock your Gpu-s I am sure you will see mich better performance from the ASUS brand.
It may also be because different memory vendor maybe PowerColor have better memory like Samsung while your Asus may have elpida or hynix which can be a limiting factor.
Under normal circumstances and with same memory Asus should offer betterperformance.

Thanks for your input. I already got this feeling too just from the overall impression. Also the Powercolor claims to have the same temp with a lot lower fan speed. I don't really trust this Powercolor that much  Grin

SO does that mean the memory vendor of the card can affect the mining performance ? Just judged by stats the ASUS memory should be better.

Yes it does as mining looks better on cards with Samsung memory compared to any other memory without modifying the BIOS, once you do a BIOS mod even Hynix becomes as good as Samsung from my experience.

Please don´t ask such old questions. Use google and search for memory timings straps for mining. This subject was discussed enough in the last 3 years.

Majority of hashrate depends on memory (Micron, Samsung seem to out perform Hynix and Elpida) of the card.  For instance my Power color 580 4gb Red Dragons out perform (mining eth) my Power color 580 8gb Red Devils, even after bios modding.  By 4 mhs.

Another example is I have 8 MSI RX570 8gb MK2.  7 of the gpu's have micron memory and 1 card has hynix.  Stock bios, the 7 cards with micron memory hashed ETH around 31.2mhs with some overclocking.  The hynix memory gpu would only get to 22mhs.  After bios modding the 7 micron memory gpus they would hash at 32.5mhs and the hynix would get 32.2mhs with the same overclocking.  The hynix version started throwing errors so I had to slightly back off the overclocking of the hynix memory gpu.

Good luck with you mining hobby!

Just wanted to let you guys know how the story ended.

I sold the powercolor Cards because i dont really trusted the durability of the cheap model i had.

With the Asus best i achieved with the card was 29Mh/s at 120W core.

It turned out that this card is really bad for mining purposes. Memory is not going above 2000 Mhz and at least i could not manage to get the consumption below 120W.

So i also sold that one.

I switched now to Sapphire RX 580 Nitro+. Lets see What performance that one brings Smiley.

Thanks for the replies Guys

Asus Dual are probably the worst out there... cooling is so bad and they pretty much use the lowest quality memory chips. If you want Asus buy Strix. Nitros have great cooling but there is big difference in quality since they use a lot different memory chips, but MSI does it to.
There is no need to OC above 2000 MHz with bios mod, it depends on the timings, you can have 2 different timings and OC one to 2000MHz and second one 2200MHz and the hashrate will be the same. But most of the free available timings need to be OCed to 2000+MHz to get 30+ from them though, except some Elpidas, Microns even to 2300MHz.

If you want Asus buy Strix.

When they were first released I bought 5x ASUS ROG Strix 570s.  Of the 10 fans only one is still spinning.  Could be a fluke in the production run as they have sequential serial numbers but if I had to bet it would certainly be on cheap fans not designed for continuous operation.

I still have few RX 470 Strix and the fans are working and still quiet as before. But you are not the only one, some of the Strix fans dies very early, but mostly RMA fix this from what I know, but I never had a problem with Strix. You can also buy cheap fake fans for Strix on Ebay, not as good, but worth the money, some of them even have Strix logo Grin so it might actually be from the same factory Grin

Edit:
I just looked at Ebay and all those cheap are gone...  Grin
Strix fans from Aliexpress then, 17 USD for both, still not bad price.
