Permit me to throw some light into this. The global world might to have not completely gotten aware of this.
There is a group of militant in Nigeria West Africa popular by the name MEND(movement for the emancipation of the  niger delta)
Niger delta is a very rich oil producing region in Nigeria and it's has become some sort of black gold region of Nigeria.

This group was created with the goal of rebeling against the illicit actions of the government in that area to promote the interest of citizens living around the area to benefit from there natural resources.

But over the years this has brought more harm than good in that area the introduction of the rebel groups has giving rise to other groups who has been notorious and terrorising the region(stealing, raping, vandalizing pipelines etc)
The nation has lost huge amount of money due to the action of this group over 4billion dollars in 2016.

Another so many other vices has been born like kidnapping, illegal fire arm peddling and so on

Nigeria government are quite corrupt in there practice and that's no doubt but rising a rebel group(who the member are notorious) has not done any good rather it has compounded the problems.
The best approach should be a dialogue

Same question I ask. Life's has been lost property destroyed and hope shattered for some ignorant people who chooses to cause chaos and disorganisation all in the name of freedom movement. Funny enough some politicians employ this set as thuggery to destroy things to upset the administration of there opposition party or individual alike.

There is a famous quote by Thomas Jefferson ...

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants..."

Unfortunately when it is just tyrants shedding the blood of other tyrants all that results is lots of bloodshed.

Most of the rebel groups that are active, are funded from governments that have different benefits from the government of the nation that the rebel group is activated.
The can't do a direct dialogue with them, because they won't have a chance. So they try to use other dirty techniques to achieve their goals.

I've seen some posts on social media that these rebels are even better armed than the Nigerian soldiers. If that is really the case, then some big groups are funding them. Most rebel groups are more like mercenaries nowadays. They are not really fighting for a noble cause.

Those posts are actually in no way far from the truth, this rebel groups are actually armed to the teeth with enormously sophisticated weapons and armoury for more than the legal force men
And this is due to corrupt practices of the government officials, funds meant for the purchase of weapons are diverted into the private pockets of unscrupulous individuals leaving the military men short of weapons in the battle field.

This is a menace that must be curbed, and with this been said its obvious the problem isn't the rebel group actually, but the corrupt government.
