I am very new to this group. I think this is the right place to post this, if not I'm sorry.

I tried to link my bank account with coinbase and they asked for my Login/Password for my online banking? It just felt wrong. The first thing people are told is not to give this info out. Is this something I should be ok with? I know coinbase is one of the biggest. Like I said it just felt wrong...

Obviously no, we shouldn't give our bank credentials to anyone.

Didn't try linking my bank account to Coinbase since our country is not supported so I don't know how's their process. In the usual process of linking bank accounts to exchanges, payment processors or any related service, it should be done by just giving the bank account number and some basic info, etc., that's it. And if let's say, you really need to log in your details, it should be done in a separate tab directly at your bank's server.

Out of curiosity, can you provide a screenshot of that login/password part?

You can move the thread here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=223.0

no; you want to focus on making sure you only submit info directly to coinbase.

The only thing they will do is ask for an account and routing number.  Also verify with the bank the KYC credentials match.

You should only be linking bank accounts from coinbase.com;  not any email link or anything....  if you are worried;  do a full signout on coinbase, and sign back in;  and it should ask you to do your 3 factor auth to login (email link, text code, and password to login).   This way you are sure you are logging into the real coinbase.

you can also check domain records for coinbase's public IP and visit that directly under HTTPS. (104.16.53.46 is the IP I see here in California)

You should NEVER follow someone else's instructions anywhere at any time to log into your bank account.   if you have;  change your password and other relative info right away.   You can only link with an account/routing number from your check or that the bank itself gives you in person, and I believe they have you verify two microdeposit amounts to be sure you control the account.  The only thing you may need to submit is for KYC (passport/ID photo, etc)...

I have >100,000 daily limits after enough purchases and sells;  I have a linked CC, Debit and bank account....  doing none of which required anything but me filling stuff out in my coinbase config/settings page and submitting photo ID.

You can tell them your bank account information but the password is absolutely not. Because when they have a password, they can easily access your account and withdraw your money.
Coinbase is really abusing its power to push users to provide unnecessary information and to learn from it.
Should we condemn Coinbase? They are really going in the wrong direction.

You can't give everything about your bank details. It's okay to give your account number but including the password? stay away, I guess you're talking to a coinbase staff imposter.

I wouldn't do it.

Coinbase and Gemini both do this, and supposedly it's secure -- they don't actually have access to your credentials. Like you said, though, it just feels wrong and seems unnecessary.

You can do manual bank verification. They'll make two small deposits < $1 to your bank account and you'll verify by reporting the amounts. I forget the exact process but I just did it when I switched banks on there a few weeks ago. Just click through the option that says you can't/won't verify using your bank login.

Coinbase and any other regular service never ask for your personal bank data.
There are many phishing sites, you need to be careful. Check again, your browser needs to look like this.

as Horizen says, post here a screenshot where they ask your login/pass, it's very important.

OP: just X out the prompt asking you to link accounts. there should be a popup after that which allows you to do an old school manual verification like squatter mentioned.

Out of curiosity, can you provide a screenshot of that login/password part?

what the OP is saying is true. this is the default way that coinbase verifies bank accounts. they use a service called "plaid" that links the two accounts. the data is supposed to be encrypted end to end so coinbase never has access to your login info.

That's a screenshot only you can see since the link is on your computer.

Can you put it on imgur.com instead (just copy and paste the image).

I don't think they should ask you for the username and password of your online banking. Mine asked me to send £2 there (I assume that's £2/$2/2 Euro).

What country are you in?

Yes, that's what I'm trying to know since I can't access the link accounts section here in my country.

The separate TAB on which the login credentials will be done by a third party secure environment or the login will be done right directly at the banks' system.

Moving on, surely, lots of customers already linked their account using Plaid. Coinbase is a big company too so I don't think some sh*t will happen. Well, just to be safe and to make you comfortable as well, then don't use the option but instead try others suggestion above.

It's asking you to sign into coinbase, not your online banking?

Sign in and see what it says, maybe it wants you to confirm it's you or maybe it just logged you out and wants you to log back in.

Seems like jackg is asking one thing while Jared is talking about another.

I responded to OP.  Gave serious advice that another person after me gave as well.

I then provided a photo because someone asked for a photo of the login page.

I then corrected the photo to a link as per request.

I just wrote this post.

Hopefully that helps.  Everything is to be taken with context to the original question, and my response to it.

Hmmm, I got really confused as op (or another newbie) posted a screenshot to a file a bit like you did. And I responded to them saying they needed to add a link to the image because that ones local on their desktop. Their post then got deleted and I hadn't quoted it but you updated your post so I assumed you were him.

If you are uncomfortable with it, then don't do it.

I don't think that Coinbase has ever asked me to do this when adding a new a bank ccount. I think that the normal procedure is supposed to simply be send 2 small transactions or something along the lines of that. There are virtually no financial institutions, even Paypal, that ask you to directly enter the password of your bank details into them.

Perhaps that's been a long time ago, and things have changed since they've integrated into the traditional banking system. But I'm still skeptical and echo others who think that this may be a phishing site you're on.
