The only altcoin which i believe can POTENTIALLY, and that is a very important keyword, outperform bitcoin is Ethereum. Other than ETH, i don't think there are any other altcoins that can match bitcoin's fame and adoption rate.
People are saying altcoins are over, many have been turned off by so many scams, bitcoin is the way to go for now or so it seems.
I totally agree with you mate, it is only ethereum that is still serving as threat now and even the ethereum too is not really encouraging because they are not holding their position very well as they are allowing bad projects and scammers to really tarnish their own image, but I know that with their upcoming ethereum 2.0, they might have put a lot of things into consideration that will allow the ethereum market to booms once again, but no matter the boom in the market cap of ethereum, it can never still reach that of bitcoin, not now and not in the future as people believe more in bitcoin that ethereum.
Bitcoin has a very strong community and it is easier to predict bitcoin than to predict any other altcoin, if you see altcoin dropping in price today, you will be scared of losing your money, but when you see bitcoin going down, you will want to buy more of it knowing that there will be an up-lift men of it within the shorted possible time.
