Honestly I don't expect this kind of performance from both teams because last season both falls between 10th and 11th place on the table, which is why I feel disappointed by their performance. This is the right to get up because the season is moving fast.

I think the reason Mbappe was worse than expected last year was because, as you mentioned, if the team as a whole wasn't bad, the defense was terrible. This season, when the team truly became a unit, Mbappe started to improve and be more productive. This season started off great, and I believe he'll continue to do so. 7 goals in 6 La Liga matches is a fantastic start, and he's already averaging over 1 goal.

I don't think this changes much for Atleti. They managed to win, but they're still in bad form. They have gotten only two wins in La Liga this season, and they play Madrid this weekend. They have been struggling all season, and for them to really compete for the league, they need to be consistent and win games.
I don't see them winning Madrid with the kind of form they are and the kind of form Madrid is in. The only advantage they have is playing at home, but I doubt that will help them. They drew with Mallorca over the weekend at home, so except they will play differently in the derby, they won't be able to get all three points from Madrid.

Its a surprise that they ended up winning after rayo dominated game for a while...I hope they can perform this way against real Madrid because athletico is really going through lots of ups and downs this season...I checked their position on the board and it wasn't really like the same team we used to know..I hope they bounce back and  make up for their lapses soon...if they really hope to defeat real Madrid they need to do better

I was surprised how it came. It is classic Atleti under Simeone: they survive on moments, not structure. This is why one week they are at home drawing with Mallorca, and the next playing Rayo with late drama. It has not changed despite the €175m on technical players. Still 4-4-2, still transitions, still Griezmann tracking back into the middle

The thing is, there is a clear path if injuries ease. Baena and Almada were purchased to deal with that uncreative side of what you talk about.
