Hey guys, I was wondering about Bitcoin, blockchain and cryptos in general and their relation to the games industry

We all know, people at my age (31 years) growed up playing games, surfing the internet and they are  very close to technology in general

Games always have put new technologies to evolving the market, like: Internet to play multiplayer games, virtual reality and 3d to have a deeper experience, photorealism, payment inside app/game and etc

But until now, games industry didn't use any new technology related to cryptos

Do you think they will use?
And if yes, how they can use BTC, blockchain and cryptos in general?

The only and most obvious for me is use cryptos to pay games, in steam, psn, xbox live and etc, but I'd like to see your ideas guys

There are games out there that is using blockchain technology.

As far as I know this is not a new thing. There is this game I've read about that while you are progressing in the game, you will be able to mine cryptocurrencies. That I think is the future of gaming and cryptocurrencies since the world is slowly shifting into that kind since games nowadays are being priced with a lot of money, in the future it will be a stable job for a lot of people not just the professionals.

I find it really, really strange how gaming has such a blind spot when it comes to crypto. You'd think they'd be running towards it but the silence is deafening.

Crypto integration is likely to come from the left field as ever and it'll be indie developers who do something with it. The gaming behemoths are full corporate and some have their own financial systems to protect just like banks.

There's nothing strange here, crypto doesn't offer much to gaming industry. Bitcoin was dropped by Steam when fees skyrocketed, other coins are not adopted because they don't have any users, Few gamers care about "truly owning their gaming assets", and only people from poor countries are interested in using games as a way, and you can't make much money off them.

Crypto integration is likely to come from the left field as ever and it'll be indie developers who do something with it. The gaming behemoths are full corporate and some have their own financial systems to protect just like banks.

Crypto and blockchain are useless in single-player games, and most indie games are single-player, they don't have resources to build large scale mmo projects. And I've seen some games that are built around blockchain, they are really lame and I wouldn't play them even if they paid me to.

I'm talking purely about in game money.

No one needs a 'blockchain' game. That said, the ongoing creep towards being permanently tethered to a developer's whim and your game being forever a lowly lease is ripe for a kick in minge.

If it didn't happen, it is unlikely to happen in the future

I refer to indie developers here. I'm not much of a gamer myself, but as far as I know many role-playing games (or whatever they are called) have their internal currencies for use inside the game (i.e. to buy things to raise your level in the game's pecking order). Crypto is a competitor to them, so why should they care?

As I see it, it is a matter of control but you can't control crypto, so it is kind of banned from being used inside such games (I mean, as a game currency). However, we can always gamble our coins away at online casinos where cryptos have established a pretty firm foothold since the very beginning

In-game money doesn't need crypto either. The main properties of in-game currencies is that they are meant to be created out of thin air to reward players, and then consumed by being spent on in-game items. Linking it with real economy, which is what many crypto-for-gaming enthusiasts propose, is generally undesirable, because it screws the in-game economy (attracts botters, cheaters, hackers, farmers) and spoils the fun of playing the game.

But until now, games industry didn't use any new technology related to cryptos

if by "use technology" you mean using the blockchain technology in the gaming industry by using the technology itself then the answer is no, it won't happen because these two technologies have nothing in common and can't be integrated in each other! think of blockchain as an inefficient database in this case.

if it is just usage of the "product", then it has already happened in a smaller scale. meaning usage of bitcoin as a payment in gaming industry and that is how it should happen since bitcoin is a currency and that is how it should be used.
the scale is still small because of the volatility, higher fees in some cases and the low adoption that bitcoin still has. we first need to reach semi-mass adoption and reach more stability to see a widespread usage of it.

Well, well. I am surprised that people don't already know about it. LOL.

Crytpo integration into games has been going on for a long time gentlemand. You are right though that it is not the gaming behemoths who are doing it. The integration has happened in terms of usage of crypto as in-game currency as well as using the blockchain itself for the gaming mechanics.
I am sure a lot of people have heard about EOS Knights. Its a shitty RPG with shitty graphics but a lot of people have been making EOS selling in-game items there. Like everything else in crypto, it is heavily tilted towards the early adopters than the better gamers.

The best in-game integration that I have yet seen is with Enjin. They even have their own minecraft server. There already have been games launched where you can actually earn blockchain items that look beautiful on their wallet. They use an ethereum standard called as ERC-1155 which is different from ERC-20 and ERC-721 (that cryptokitties used).

They already have a bunch of games out including:
1. A dungeon crawler: Forgotten Artifacts
2. A space shooter MMORPG: Space Misfits
3. There is a crypto puzzle game with an in-game reward of 20 BTC, Age of Rust. The alpha isn't out yet i think. It started here at the forum years ago and I believe has grown really well.
4. A PVP RPG 9Lives Arena

I am a BTC believer when it comes to cryptocurrency. In gaming, I find Enjin really credible. If you have even a slight bit interest in gaming, I encourage you to try some of their games.

This idea is very good, we are currently trying to integrate with cryptocurrency in a MUD game, and it may become very interesting in the future.

you already answered your own question because you are aware that you can now use your cryptos on those gaming platform  that you stated above  .

also there also blockchain/crypto inspired games that you can grab on the appstore and playstore    .

there were also called dapp/s   in which there are apps and games that also uses those technologies that i stated above  .

sometimes all you need is a research and activenes on the web to be able to discover those exciting and new trends that are present thesedays  .

Yeah, Steam is a known gaming company and once accepted bitcoin before but sadly they've removed that option to pay for their credits. I see that usecase with what they did although there are services that you can use to enjoy gaming while paying bitcoin.

I think Gabe Newell will come up into consideration to start accepting payment through bitcoin again. There's just lack of suggestion and reach out to their support since they are listening to their customers feedback.

IIRC, Steam was accepting bitcoins for their marketplace correct? I'm not a PC gamer so wouldn't know much about that. There are already a number of games which are built for the crypto markets. Like I'm talking about the games that use crypto as their main source of the action. As long as PSN is concerned, they're not going to do it in the years to come as you know how exclusive they're with their technology.

Not bitcoin but cryptocurrencies in general are already being used in the gaming industry. I remember Enjin coin which also launched their signature campaign on bitcointalk.
Recently it had a big spike in it's price after a rumor spread saying Enjin had partnered with Samsung but then the price went way down.
If we ignore the speculation then Enjin coin has done really well over the years and better than any of it's competitors.

I know there are many more possibilities, but already blockchain has introduced the ultimate gambling industry. We can see right now there are many pokers, bingo, dice, and related to probability games are available on blockchain even many gambling enthusiasts are trying to connect existing gaming platform to the blockchain which can give more mobility to users.

Still many testings are going on with blockchain technology to enhance many factors comparing current gaming platform.

Tokenization is great tool offering users to perform gaming activity which can be easily exchanged against fiat, and this can happen with the only blockchain.

They are not yet popular at this moment since blockchain and crypto in general are not that popular right now. Maybe in some countries, blockchain is popular but to use it in gaming industry is a different thing. I believe that it will be used in the future. More games that involves blockchain technology will arise in the future for sure.

Actually, they are using it now like the game I played last time, they allowed their game ITEMS to be paid with bitcoins. and also you can use bitcoin to trade with the other players.

Some other games right now run with their own Altcoins their game currency is Altcoins.

The bigger gaming companies does not want to touch Bitcoin, before it is classified as a currency by more governments. They have to adhere to their local laws and most of the governments does not officially accept Bitcoin as a currency.  Roll Eyes

I have send several emails and posted a lot of request on gaming platforms to accept Bitcoin and the answer is always the same... They cannot accept it, because it is not a recognized currency.

The smaller companies have already incorporated Blockchain technologies and Alt coins in their games.  Roll Eyes
