Hi all,

I have finally pulled the trigger and purchased a GPU mining (6 x ASUS AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB rig to mine alt coins, to accompany my ASIC Miner (Antminer S9).

The mining rig I have purchased comes with EthOS preinstalled - Would you guys reccomend this as a starting OS or should I move to something like SMOS or HiveOS?

I will be looking to have this mining rig setup at a remote location away from my home address, so being able to remotely control the unit is a must (although I will be around the unit 6 out of 7 days)

I have watch verious videos about each OS but still on the fence which one would suit me best?

Any help / advice always appriciated.

Thanks

Whats the difference between them? I mean its all based on Linux from what i predict, so it doesnt matter, what matter is TIME which you should utilise this cards close to 99,98% of it. Not working, laying down loosing you money and getting old which is loosing money also.
Whatever OS you will choose, make it run already Smiley this is my advice.

I think ethOS only support Ethash algo or they only have limited algo supported. If you are planning to mine only ethereum you can use this OS but if you are planning to mine with different algo go for other OS like SMOS/HiveOS or just windows for more flexibility.

If you stay mining with ETH you can't make a profit or you can't reach your ROI back. GPU miners mostly mine what suggested from whattomine. But for me go for windows OS and mine Beam coin then hold.

Yeah, unfortunately, mining brings very little profit and you won't hit ROI since the difficulty will increase. If you mine new altcoins you might be able to make quite a lot. I managed to mine about $50 in a month with on a rx480
This is luck too though so it cannot be relied on and thus I cannot either recommend GPU mining, however, If you already have the equipment I say find new altcoins and go for it. You might make some nice profits and the thing is it will be daily and different coins. You never knew which may moon. As long as you can pay the electricity cost than its basically free mining.

You can mine other algos using EthOS, but from looking at the knowledge base for the OS, only Zcash and Monero are officially supported, through claymore and xmr-stak respectively. As for whether or not it's the best mining OS, I would suggest you test out other ones like SMOS or HiveOS as you mentioned yourself and see which one you like the most. EthOS is generally easy to use and it's already installed on your rig, so it'll be simple to run.

what did you pay for the rig?
did you purchased it new or second hand?
anyway stay with linux distros as they are very stable compared to windows

£1100 - Second hand

I am currently using SMOS - Might try HiveOS next.... but I have it up and running and hopefully configured right... I will have to wait until my first payout to confirm this - But It is mining to my specified wallet address so lets see what happens.

I am going to do more reading up which coins etc... but just starting with ETH at the moment.

Really depends on your taste. Havent used SMOS for while now, as i switched on hiveos and very happy with it. Just in that time when i started to use it was much more advanced. Dont know if SMOS has integrated same main features as hive does, but if they do then hive is always first to update their software with latest features like telegram notifications, aggressive undervaluing, mem tweak tool....etc. Would suggest you to try it out, at start it seems very complicated, but when starting to use its very easy.
I have made installation guide also https://mineshop.eu/2018/07/27/how-to-install-hiveos-and-setup-for-mining/

Thanks mineshop.eu - I will give it a go later as me "Free Trial" is coming to an end with SMOS (which is fairly easy and straightforward to use)

Anyone have any personal opinion on what to mine with 580's?

I am in the process of saving up now for an NV rig...

Thanks

RX570/580s are most efficient for algorithms like from most popular coins Ethereum and Monero have.

Hi,

I have now made the switch over to HIVEOS as it is a free option and fairly easy to use.

I am setup mining ETH for now just to make sure settings are correct and fund are being recieved at the wallet address.

My question is this?

I am miining using RX 580 8GB Strix ROG - and I am pulling 155.5mhs for 890W (according to HIVEOS) - does this seam right or should I be getting more?

Thanks

How many gpus you have 6x ? If so hashrate should be over 185mh/s . Do you have screenshot of your OC settings?

I am running 6x 580's - I am not running OC at the moment - I added a preset one from inside HIVEOS last night and it dropped down to 140mhs so I obviously reverted back to standard this morning.

I can send you a screenshot but obviously nothing to show you.

Do you have a reccomendation on OC settings - I didt want to start messing until I found something that has been tried and tested - as I did not want to break anything lol :-p

Guys I have one question, especially directly on OP. Does it still worth to buy rx 580 now and mine with them? This GPU was very popular 1-2 years ago but after releasic asic, a lot of people gave up on mining eth with GPU and decided to pick asic instead of it, well still a lot of them continue but now buying RX 580? Wouldn't it better to buy for example Nvidia GTX1080ti? At least you don't depend on eth and can mine a lot of alternatives.

Yes still seems quite low , just a sample http://prntscr.com/p2l7f8 , these are the RX580 4gb. Is your cards modified? RX580 8gb memory clock max is 2250mhz so you can try push a bit more. Also at overclock setting where is mem tweak tool insert value 30. If still face issue you can pm me and i could help you when will have free time.

I think that HiveOS support a bit more of miners compared to EthOS but with Rx 580 you should stick with it as these cards perform their best on Ethash algorithm.

Both OS are very stable and you will not have random driver problems like it often happen on Windows.

that is a pretty sweet price for the whole rig

the power consumption is really very high
all rx580 cards can be undervolt to get 30 mhs for 75 to 80w per card
try reducing core and core voltage
it will reduce the power a lot
less power consumption lower temps

The RX580 won't get 80Watts @ 30MH/s. The absolute best would maybe be about 120 Watts. When you measure power consumption you need to actually use a watt meter and not the figure that you see in GPU-z. That figure refers to the GPU wattage consumption and doesn't include the consumption used by the memory controller and other parts of the GPU.

I think the best figure I ever got was like 120 Watts @ 27.5 MH/s and this was with the highest ASIC quality GPU i had. Going any lower wasn't possible because it got freezing issues.

So if you got a 6 GPU rig then what you should expect is about ~750 Watts about 120Watts per GPU and 30 Watts or so for the memory, CPU, motherboard, etc.
