Serbia is again the Olympic winner in water polo.
At the beginning of the tournament, in the group stage, it seemed that Greece and Spain have the best chances, but in the continuation of the tournament, Serbia raised the level of the game and beat Spain in the semifinal and today Greece in the final.

Serbian dolphins managed to beat Spain and Greece for the gold medal! I watched both games, and I can say it was tight until the end!

Well, it was a third gold medal for my country, putting Serbia in 28th place, with 1 silver and 5 bronze medals... this is a record for my country, we won 1 more medal than the last time in Brasil where we had 8 medals!

Nice Olympics, as expected US won the most medals... in one little moment I thought that the Chinese can keep the lead, but last few days they just couldn't keep up with the US!

You should also include Taiwan in the list of the countries as well, they have a 2 gold haul in this Olympics and then Hong Kong and Thailand. South East Asia (SEA) is well represented in Tokyo. Yeah, this Covid situation really bring the best (and worst) of our athletes.

Yeah, speaking at least for Malaysia and Indonesia, the Olympics have always been an event to follow, especially in badminton. Girl from my village took silver in diving (!) of all sports in the last Olympics, so I share in the joys of all these first-timer golds.

Bermuda, Taiwan, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia are extra sweet though, as they've won their first-ever golds. Can't imagine how happy they are, and as mentioned, especially given the hell they've all been through this year politically, socially, economically, etc. Not to put any less shine on HK and India, but they've won gold before;)

So, USA passed China in gold medals as well in the last day of the Games. It was really exciting, China had a big lead on paper but most of the remaining athletes were favorites to win medals for USA.

In total, 93 countries managed to win at least 1 medal which is a great accomplishment.

Congratulations to both our neighbors Serbia and Slovenia, combined with Kosovo the Balkans won 11 gold medals (3, 3, 3, 2).

During the 2016 Rio Games also they had won one gold (total of three medals). Similarly, Thailand has won a total of 10 gold medals, including one this time. During 2016 Rio, they had won two golds. Same is true with Indonesia as well. Total of 8 gold medals since they first participated in 1952, including the one from Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu in Badminton (Women's doubles).

For Bermuda, this is the first ever gold medal (Flora Duffy, in triathlon). Their only medal before this was the bronze medal in 1976, won by Clarence Hill.

They performed extremely poorly in gymnastics (perhaps with the exception of Sunisa Lee). And then in track and field also, they were below par. This time they won a total of 39 gold medals, which is far lower when compared to what they received in 2016 Rio (46 golds, 37 silver). And despite biased judges and a ban from the IOC, Russia actually improved their medal tally from 2016.

actually, I did expected that when we beat Spain, it was a matter of experience in the final
goal in last second of third quarter with Spain (from 4:7 to 5:7) changed everything for Serbia team, and it was clear that we are in winning strike when fourth quarter started

congrats to our team, and all other Olympics winners, seven Waterpolo players are getting retired after this, so it will be a challenge to get third gold in a row in Paris

Personally I think all of this is well deserved,,, but I remember reading in the past that especially for USSR athletes and Chinese athletes, other than the medals and the glory and honor etc they got nothing. And even in the old days in Asia athletes who did so well were famous, but the most they got after that was a coaching position with the government.

This is great. In Croatia, the athletes are receiving a little less than 30.000 euro for gold medals, 17.500 for silver and 12.000 for bronze. That is really peanuts compared to what most of the other countries are giving, even the ones with lower life standards like Serbia and Kosovo.

I'm actually really surprised that our athletes don't perform for other countries. Some of them did and we were really quick to paint them as national traitors but I actually support any that make a career choice that is away from Croatia.

So, when we win it, the reward is automatically multiplied by 15 or so (because every player gets a reward) and the amount is quite big.

Still, since the Olympics are every 4 years and both of our neighbors (Slovenia and Serbia) who are equally good (if not better) in collective sports have bigger rewards, I'd still like us to reward our best athletes more appropriately. Most of them participate in really unknown sports that basically aren't paid at all so it would really be great if their effort was appreciated more.

This is very true. My country is probably a good example of this. In the 1996 games, the UK managed only 1 gold medal and finished in 36th place overall. It was a real low point, and there was a lot of national shame. After that, the government started channeling large sums of money into elite sport. Then we got awarded the games as a host nation, which increased the focus even more. And since then, the last few games we've finished in the top few places - even coming out second in Rio.

All countries have potentially great athletes, but they need funding to reach that potential.

It's a thing that is difficult to achieve after many years with no medal brought home.

Before the thread will be closed, just want to congratulate our delegates.

First time in our country PH to received that number of medals in the Olympics. Hope we can have the same streak on Paris Olympics 2024. Our delegates are now currently enjoying the perks and benefits they received.

After a year, they now planned to get back on training. It will take again years of practice to ensure that they are fully ready in the next Summer Olympics.

Overall, this is how the top nations performed in comparison with 2016:

1. USA - 39 golds this time (-7): maintained dominance in swimming, lost medals in gymnastics and track and field.
2. China - 38 (+12): huge improvement when compared to last time. Dominated certain sports like diving.
3. Japan - 27 (+15): huge improvement, aided by home advantage
4. Great Britain - 22 (-5): more or less maintained their tally
5. Russia - 20 (+1): surprisingly maintained the tally, despite the ban
6. Australia - 17 (+9): huge improvement.
