There are many developers from Bitcoin core who still use this forum,  so I don't think your information is correct.

This is a good forum, you just need to look in the right boards. This board is a bad one, but technical discussion and support boards, for example, are very good.

Where did you get that impression? I’d genuinely be interested in knowing the arguments that back the assertion stated in the OP, as well as the scope of "core" in it’s context.

Besides the quality side to discussions that can be taking place in one and another platform, there is also the quantitate side. On this latter measure, I’ve come across a site that claims to provide stats on reddit, and for Bitcoin it shows as follows: https://subredditstats.com/r/Bitcoin If the numbers are true, the interesting ones would be Comments per Day (917) and Posts per Day (146). I’m not a Reddit user, so I can’t tell if those numbers are good, great or what.

Quality comparison wise I where it would be interesting to expand, and that is why I wanted to know what backed the initial OP' assertion.

Yes good point. It seems a common message is this forum is on decline from its high point.
Not as relevant for crypto and blockchain insight. To me it seems pretty active.

Does your "friend's" name start with an R and end with an R? Just curious.  Roll Eyes

I think the question is more hypothetical in the sense that where the discussions will take place in case Bitcointalk no longer exists, but there is no reason to expect that this will ever happen. I'm pretty sure that in the worst case scenario the community will bring it back to life in some form or shape.

One thing is sure, they will NOT be taking place on bitchcoin dot com's forum.  Wink

It is an absurd idea without significant benefits and it will  likely spur further chaos since we all all knew bitcointalk.org is the premier

forum to tackle  everything related to Bitcoin. Reddit  is not designed to handle in-depth discussions  in a forum like manner just like

what bitcointalk.org offers. Imho.

I got this impression from several sources. Some related to tracking sentiment on Bitcoin generally for prospective investors. Others for marketing and promoting ICO and STO projects.
And in Feb there was a piece about a third of referrals dropping in one month to bitcointalk.org
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/bitcointalk-lost-third-users-february-004501426.html

So as a newbie I see a lot of discussion and activity IMO. But not able to compare to 2-3 years ago activity.

While some have left, I don't think everything is exclusively as you say, in fact, the forum has increased its quality since the merit system was implemented and this without taking into account that the forum has been since the beginning of Bitcoin and the Since the first publication of Satoshi, I know that some want to be protagonists, many forums and social networks that make the competition may arise, but the bitcointalk forum represents the story and that story is active, if some are gone, surely Take a look and review the topics here, you cannot replace the irreplaceable.

there is no decline. i think some people sometimes over exaggerate things when it comes to this forum. like any other public forum, this place grew and that growth attracted all kinds of people. from people who were genuinely interested in bitcoin and learning more to trolls who are here to spam. the "earning" part might sometimes lead to more spammers but they usually are purged from the forum.

when you only focus on the spammers and negative part, of course it seems like there is a decline! but why not focus on the positive? as much as there is a growth in spammers, there is a growth in the number of experts that are around here with positive discussions too.

There is a FOMO brewing...

Developers might not be discussing things here, but that is pretty normal nowdays. Usually those discussions go in their separate areas, such as a mailing list or a freenode dev channel. Some of them are here and even have global moderator status...

Incidentally i NEVER go to reddit for Bitcoin matters, tho i have an account and probably subscribed r/bitcoin or whatever. I don't think reddit is suitable for developing talk.

Your question is way too hypothetical, to answer it you need to know what made "core bitcoin community" move from this forum - was it abuse by administrations or DT, or the quality of conversations became too low, or maybe forum's technology is not up to modern expectations - there can be countless reasons, and they all determine who would be left on this forum.

I don't think this is true. Surely, some of the earliest members left the forum, and I guess the majority of people active on the forum are earning money from signature campaigns/bounties or planning to do so. Still, though, even those who are somewhat working here can also be interested in discussing the topics. I, for one, like this forum, because if there's important news, someone will write about it here and offer to discuss. It's interesting to see what people think, what they believe and what they worry about. So in a sense, Bitcointalk has a strong and motivated community.

There are two separate matters here, that could have a common link between them, or not:

a) Is Bitcointalk less active overtime (i.e. as the article you referenced in the post I am responding to states)?

Well yes, that is pretty much true. The number of net posts created on Bitcointalk has decreased quite a lot since the beginning of 2018 (see https://public.tableau.com/shared/CM5PFFGQ2?:display_count=yes&:origin=viz_share_link), especially due ICO/Bounty coming to a stall with regards of what it was back then. With less ICOs, less bounties, and ATH being a distant mirage, many people have gone amiss from the forum, just in the same way they swarmed in when the tide was rising high. Things seem to be rather stable as of late in terms of monthly created net posts though; not decreasing as of late.

This is not an isolated feature, and since you referred to an article that looked at Google trends, let’s look at it from a broader perspective (i.e. 5 years instead on 1 year and comparing Bitcointalk with Bitcoin):

The two charts have quite a similarity. That is to say, as expected, sways to and from Bitcointalk are pretty much related to the sways on Bitcoin itself.

Note that Google trends is fine as a reference tool, but subject to some drawbacks:
-   It can, at times, be allegedly manipulated (see Google Trends went crazy for the Btc search).
-   It is based on the relative value of searches of a term vs all searched terms, and does not display absolute values (see re:Google Trends went crazy for the Btc search).

b) Is Bitcoin Community moving over to Reddit?

The stats I referenced (https://subredditstats.com/r/Bitcoin) show (scroll down the stat) that comments per day is receding pretty much over the past few months (except for July 2019 where it was pretty high for some reason). On the other hand, the subscriber cumulative chart shows a nice surge between 137k subscribers in 2019. Bitcointalk in the same period has 157K new accounts (see Statistics of user registrations on Bitcointalk 2017-2019). Granted that many of those Bitcointalk created accounts are twat-a-bot type accounts, but I cannot say what goes on on Reddit to compare this side-effect.

Now whether the r/Bitcoin is really gaining adepts from Bitcointalk, in a clear transfer of “core” contributors is something I do not know, and cannot really see referenced here numerically. Either way, I’m pretty sure both environment have posters and content of all sorts, good and bad, but it would be interesting to get some insights from people that are usual contributors on both r/Bitcoin and Bitcointalk to compare from a perceived quality point of view. For the time being, I have seen no objective proof to that effect.

Define 'core Bitcoin community'.

If it means the old school hard core from the earliest of days I think they've gotten bored of here as it got taken over by Google translate morons in search of a pittance.

I can't say the quality of discourse on Reddit is all that much higher but the financial incentive at least isn't there.

The real communication about real work used to happen here, now it'll be on private or more exclusive channels.

"If core bitcoin community moved from Bitcointalk to Reddit then.." it will result to chaos since Reddit cannot handle efficiently the total amount of information from bitcointalk since its creation. Moreover the idea of migrating all existing data from bitcointalk to reddit is ridiculous!

I find Reddit a piece of shit. It astonishes me that it's so popular considering how agonisingly unwieldy it is. I find it impossible to find half remembered posts from 12 hours ago sometimes, let alone years.

It feels like one of those things that's tolerated simply because it's been around for so long but if you proposed it today you'd get punched in the tits for the mediocrity of your proposal.

If the community ever really did go full Reddit I'd leave the community to it for good.
