Bitcoin v0.1 Alpha release notes
Satoshi introduced bitcoin on mailing list
https://sourceforge.net/p/bitcoin/mailman/message/21312004/

Release notes for Bitcoin v0.1 Alpha

Bitcoin is a new electronic cash system that uses a peer-to-peer
network to prevent double-spending.  It's completely decentralized
with no server or central authority.

You can find screenshots and the download link at:
http://www.bitcoin.org

Windows only for now.  Open source C++ code is included.

- Unpack the files into a directory
- Run BITCOIN.EXE
- It automatically connects to other nodes

If you can keep a node running that accepts incoming connections,
you'll really be helping the network a lot.  Port 8333 on your
firewall needs to be open to receive incoming connections.

The software is still alpha and experimental.  There's no guarantee
the system's state won't have to be restarted at some point if it
becomes necessary, although I've done everything I can to build in
extensibility and versioning.

You can get coins by getting someone to send you some, or turn on
Options->Generate Coins to run a node and generate blocks.  I made
the proof-of-work difficulty ridiculously easy to start with, so
for a little while in the beginning a typical PC will be able to
generate coins in just a few hours.  It'll get a lot harder when
competition makes the automatic adjustment drive up the difficulty.
Generated coins must wait 120 blocks to mature before they can be
spent.

There are two ways to send money.  If the recipient is online, you
can enter their IP address and it will connect, get a new public
key and send the transaction with comments.  If the recipient is
not online, it is possible to send to their Bitcoin address, which
is a hash of their public key that they give you.  They'll receive
the transaction the next time they connect and get the block it's
in.  This method has the disadvantage that no comment information
is sent, and a bit of privacy may be lost if the address is used
multiple times, but it is a useful alternative if both users can't
be online at the same time or the recipient can't receive incoming
connections.

Total circulation will be 21,000,000 coins.  It'll be distributed
to network nodes when they make blocks, with the amount cut in half
every 4 years.

first 4 years: 10,500,000 coins
next 4 years: 5,250,000 coins
next 4 years: 2,625,000 coins
next 4 years: 1,312,500 coins
etc...

When that runs out, the system can support transaction fees if
needed.  It's based on open market competition, and there will
probably always be nodes willing to process transactions for free.

Satoshi Nakamoto

Response of Hal Finney:
https://sourceforge.net/p/bitcoin/mailman/message/21312757/

...

Congratulations to Satoshi on this first alpha release.  I am looking
forward to trying it out.

...

It's interesting that the system can be configured to only allow a
certain maximum number of coins ever to be generated. I guess the
idea is that the amount of work needed to generate a new coin will
become more difficult as time goes on.

One immediate problem with any new currency is how to value it. Even
ignoring the practical problem that virtually no one will accept it
at first, there is still a difficulty in coming up with a reasonable
argument in favor of a particular non-zero value for the coins.

As an amusing thought experiment, imagine that Bitcoin is successful and
becomes the dominant payment system in use throughout the world.  Then the
total value of the currency should be equal to the total value of all
the wealth in the world. Current estimates of total worldwide household
wealth that I have found range from $100 trillion to $300 trillion. With
20 million coins, that gives each coin a value of about $10 million.

So the possibility of generating coins today with a few cents of compute
time may be quite a good bet, with a payoff of something like 100 million
to 1! Even if the odds of Bitcoin succeeding to this degree are slim,
are they really 100 million to one against? Something to think about...

Get 5 free bitcoins from freebitcoins.appspot.com
Gavin Andersen created first bitcoin faucet. Everyone was able to get 5 bitcoins for free.
Gavin wrote: "Five ฿ per customer, first come first served, I've stocked it with ฿1,100 to start.  I'll add more once I'm sure it is working properly."
Satoshi's response: "Excellent choice of a first project, nice work.  I had planned to do this exact thing if someone else didn't do it, so when it gets too hard for mortals to generate 50BTC, new users could get some coins to play with right away.  Donations should be able to keep it filled.  The display showing the balance in the dispenser encourages people to top it up.

You should put a donation bitcoin address on the page for those who want to add funds to it, which ideally should update to a new address whenever it receives something."

Shamir backup
Satoshi Labs introduced new seed handling security standard that allows generation of multiple recovery shares and apply multisignature scheme on seeds. For example for recovering seed from 2-of-3 Shamir shares, you need to have at minimum 2 shares from 3. If attacker has only one recovery share, he is not able to recover seed.

This was a great post to read, really informative  Grin

Would be cool if someone takes this information and make an illustrated timeline to show all these important dates for bitcoin. But in this format was great to read too. I will try to translate the post to Spanish because is great information to share with my friends.

Thanks again for the info and i leave a merit for it.

There is one thing that you missed @monerama

Bitcoin Whitepaper wasn't the first Whitepaper made by Satoshi Nakamoto.

Few months earlier Satoshi Nakamoto made Ecash Whitepaper - Eletronic Cash Without a Trusted Third Party
https://draftable.com/compare/rCuIgdwzImUI

It is almost a draft of the original bitcoin whitepaper. You can add to bitcoin origins.  Grin

I have seen something like this before but now I can't find it—it's more like an infographic.

Anyway, thanks for posting this again it's great to see such history of Bitcoin and other currency. Wink

The post was indeed good and informative but it was too long to read. So long that I skipped most of the part to reach the bottom of the post.
OP could have been formatted in a much better way though. Thumbs up for the informative post.

This could be one of the most informative subjects I have ever seen. I didn't know this much detail about before and after of Bitcoin. I couldn't read all of it but I can say that it is very beneficial.

You must have done a lot of research to write such a detailed history. However, as others said, it's really long for a bitcointalk post. Perhaps, a visualized version with a timeline, steps, and some images would be easier to perceive. Especially since you have such an intriguing name of the thread about Bitcoin secrets. I also wanted to add that perhaps you should consider adding David Chaum with his Digicash. even though the project failed, it was in a way something like the first cryptocurrency, at least in terms of anonymity and cryptography used to perform financial transactions.

I think the pre-Bitcoin part is a bit too short, there's much more to it. Check the first chapter of Princeton's "Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency Technologies" (the book is available for free), I was truly amazed when I read it for the first time and found out just how many attempts to create electronic money there was before Bitcoin. Surely Satoshi knew about many of them and learned from their mistakes.

This was really a great timeline of significant Bitcoin history and events that took place since the start of Bitcoin. I never knew Satoshi Nakamoto supported Gavin Andersen's faucet and that he planned to do a project like that.  Grin  <I guess Gavin is still kicking his own ass for giving away 5 bitcoins per IP from that faucet.>  Tongue

Thank you OP, I hope you created this timeline and that you are not plagiarizing someone else's work here.  Huh If it is not your own work, please post a link to the original source, because I would hate it if the mods would decide to remove this for plagiarism.  Roll Eyes

This is an amazing and informative panorama of the prehistory and history of the King of Cryptos. I am learning a lot just reading this post. Right now, I am already thinking of the things just waiting ahead for Bitcoin for the next 10 years. Will it be able to still be influential after 20 years or will there be another one sitting on its vacated throne?

Wow, this is great, good job and hope you plan to maintain it with updates!

I would love to see this in the form of a website, like an horizontal timeline kind of deal, I think that would work great.

I am a little surprised by the anonymouspeech.com domain name. Why didnt we hear much about it before today? I guess everyone is more focused on "anonymous money" lol. Another unsung hero of Bitcoin is the actual inventor of Proof of Works. . through hashcash I think.
Lots of good information you provided. Good job!
