Millennials To Become Primary Audience Of Modern Hotels

Millennials are highly mobile members of our society who know the worth of time and are capable of working remotely. What they also value is a healthy lifestyle. After the COVID-19 situation, the hospitality industry must become even more loyal to this demographic. A lot of market players believe that in just six years, the number of people capable of working from anywhere in the world will increase to 1.8 billion people, making up one-third of the global workforce. The hotel business started preparing for the new reality a few years ago already; the pandemic catalyzed the process.

One of the main principles of operation for hotels that target Generation Y and Z is about forming temporary and compact workplaces. It’s entirely possible that the living and public spaces will be designed with this idea in mind – having the option to set up a workplace anywhere in the hotel that will maybe even comply with social distancing requirements.

Tourists and business travellers will soon come back to hotels. There is also little doubt that another future crisis will force the industry to prepare and withstand – be it an epidemic or a natural disaster. Hotels must remain capable of providing comfortable and safe accommodation.

Post-Pandemic Vacation – How To Make Guests Safe

Today we’ll take a look at the health safety example set by Grecotel Hotels & Resorts, a popular Greek hotel chain.

Check-in

In order to thoroughly clean the rooms, standard check-out time is 11:00, while check-in starts at 16:00.

Rooms

Guests are provided with a welcome package that includes personal supplies and sanitizer.

Decontamination

Every hotel has a decontamination team that does room cleaning, and pays special attention to both suspected and confirmed coronavirus cases. When a suspected coronavirus patient can’t be transferred to a medical center or hospital, a restricted zone with an extra level of security with higher hygiene standards is set up to quarantine the sick.

Food

In hotel restaurants, the smorgasbord will stay, but will feature more individual portions and packaged products. With limited capacity in mind, breakfast and dinner are served on a certain schedule. Hand sanitizer at the restaurant entrance becomes an obligatory measure, just as body temperature measurement. Tables are made with disposable table covers, table-ware is provided individually.

Beach

Large territories of most hotels and beaches allow for maintaining proper social distancing between beachgoers.

Not All Countries Are Eager To Start Taking Tourists

We continue keeping you updated on the state of the hospitality industry and how countries are coming back to normal life. Today we are talking about Finland that is clearly not in a rush to start admitting tourists.

Finland will open up for tourists if their country has no more than eight new cases per 100,000 people over a period of two weeks.

If you are a resident of Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Austria, Greece, Malta, Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, you can enter the country via plane, car or ferry.

Citizens of China, Thailand, Australia, South Korea, Georgia, and several African countries must have a sufficient reason to enter Finland (work, medical treatment, funeral).

Safety Measures Used In Hotels Today

Hotels and apartment hotels care about their guests feeling safe during their stay. All the necessary precautions are in place to ensure travellers’ comfort and peace of mind even during the pandemic.

Thorough cleaning and sanitation

At Marriott International, all surfaces in public spaces and rooms are disinfected with medical-grade sanitizers more often. Hilton International has developed a program called Hilton CleanStayTM with Lysol that introduces a new standard for cleaning and disinfecting hotels, further improving guest safety.

The program is made up of the following components:

-Hilton CleanStay Room Seal that indicates nobody has been to the room after disinfection;

-additional disinfection of 10 most used surfaces in hotel rooms, including door handles and light switches;
more frequent public space disinfection;

-improved cleaning procedures and other changes to the buffet, food and drink orders to rooms and conference halls;

-improved cleaning procedures at fitness centres.

Another hospitality market player, Intercontinental Hotels Group, has also reimagined its approach to cleanliness. Guests can rest assured the hotel is taking care of their safety with:

-keycard disinfection;

-deep cleaning of frequently used public space surfaces;

-signs showing time since the last clean-up, special attention to pool cleaning, fitness centres and bars;

-visible proof of thorough disinfection (seen on glassware and TV remotes).

What Hotels Will Look Like In The Future

The Covid-19 pandemic has altered the way life goes for people all around the world, and hotels are no exception. Having thought about it a great deal, we have decided to highlight a few points that will end up changing hotels. They are forced to adapt to the new reality, for instance, digitalization of services.

Mobile apps for check-in and departure from cash

Implementation of mobile apps has become an important point. Digital services help both speeds up check-in/check-out and minimize human contact during stay. This is only the beginning. By the way, over 4700 Hilton hotels around the world offer contactless check-in and check-out with a digital key, eliminating the need for physical contact with guests.

Disinfection

Special attention is paid to sanitizing dishes and table-ware in dishwashers. Plastics are likely to be stepped away from for both environmental reasons and as a cost-saving measure.

Sanitizers and disinfectant wipes will be available to guests in rooms of such hotels as, for example, Intercontinental Hotels Group.

Room capacity restrictions

Some countries recommend hotels to follow one room per person/family policy. This trend might stick.

These are but a few changes that we can highlight in today’s article. Depending on how the pandemic situation unfolds, other areas of hotel life will also change!

Demanding guests

The pandemic has profoundly altered the way hotels operate, and some of these changes might stay for a long time. A lot of the changes were less obvious, yet they require special attention on the part of hoteliers.

Smile. Wearing a medical mask is a requirement for hotel staff. On the face of it, masks conceal the staple of the hospitality industry – genuine smiles. However, this isn’t exactly true, and it’s still important to smile even under the mask. Guests will notice and feel welcome. Besides, masks shift the guests’ attention to your eyes, tone of voice and body language.

Face. It’s difficult for guests and hotel staff to remember and recognize each other when everyone has a mask on. A good solution for it would be placing an employee’s photo without a mask on their name tag.

Tips. Restaurant waiters and administration have already noticed the downward trend in tips, perhaps, due to aversion to cash, so hotels should look into a cashless tip system to continue motivating the staff.

Compassion. Many guests find themselves in a constant state of stress over the entire situation. This may lead to conflicts. Hotel employees need to be empathetic to guests. This improves guest loyalty by a great deal. In time, we will see even more changes to the relationships between the hotel and its guests. What’s important is that guests have been staying home for too long and are looking for the first opportunity to hop on a plane and get away. Now is the time when guests are looking for more than just comfort, they expect to be impressed with the level of care they are given.

Large-scale Digitalization

The pandemic has pushed the hotel business to follow the digitalization path more quickly. A recent industry survey shows that in Europe, Asia and the US over 80% of travelers will now take great care to maintain social distancing in hotels, while 70% of hotels soon will or already have implemented contactless customer service practices.

However, experts believe that the Russian hotel sector is aimed at overcoming the crash rather than implementing expensive innovation. The sector is bleeding red ink.

Considering the consequences of the pandemic, hoteliers will have to contend with a new type of client that will demand extra-special treatment. Safety becomes the main focus, and this goal can be achieved with the help of digital solutions.

This is confirmed by an Oracle and Skift poll: with over 1.8 thousand various hotel industry leaders surveyed and some 4.6 thousand clients from North and Latin Americas, Europe and Asia-Pacific. The survey showed that 84% of travelers believe that maintaining social distancing is the most important factor in choosing a hotel.

Some 70% of customers surveyed have expressed their preference for hotels that offer self check-in and check-out. Some 20% believe that extended room service (for instance, food delivery) is an important safety factor that helps to avoid visiting public spaces in the hotel.

Industry leaders have stepped forward expressing their readiness to comply with these requests. Almost 82% have either implemented or are in the process of implementing changes to the public spaces that will help maintain the required distance between guests and staff. Over 70% of hotel sector directors claim they have either implemented or are in the process of implementing contactless payments and digital information services, while some 60% are using smartphone-app-based room keys.

Two thirds (67%) of directors report having implemented or planning to implement self check-in and check-out. Over 60% of industry representatives have expanded or are in the process of expanding the room service, while 50% are developing new food delivery options.

Eight digital technologies

ModiHost team always follows new trends in the hospitality industry. We are glad to notice that AI use in hotels now goes beyond temperature and light adjustment or playing guests’ favourite music. Hotels are starting to use AI for automation and service quality improvement via learning guests’ preferences and anticipating their needs.

Voice assistants are becoming an integral part of room service. Some, yet few, hotels accept payment in digital currency after blockchain user identification.

What else can digital technologies offer the industry?

Augmented reality is used to stimulate travel packages sales by showing hotel rooms, surroundings and local attractions via an AR headset.

Another amazing technology is the brain-computer interface. BCI is used for remote control of various objects, suitcases for example, by thought, and to engage guests in interactive games played by thought alone.

Hotels are becoming like something from sci-fi, and it’s only the beginning!

Travel: digital trends of 2020

Today lets talk about prospects of digital tourism and its development trends this year.

Online booking and global search.
In 2020 online booking surpassed $800 billion mark. Experts estimate there will be 700 million online booking users looking for an ideal vacation in 2023.

Moreover, 33% of users say a virtual assistant played an integral role in helping them plan a great vacation.

The internet allows for a spontaneous trip. In 2020 Google Analytics show 519% increase in search queries including “this evening” and “today” compared to 2015.

Speaking of global searches, 150 million bookings are made online.

Millennials prefer to look up information about an upcoming trip on a hotel site rather than a travel agency’s one. Furthermore, in 2018 users began to book tours in mobile apps, and it is becoming more popular.

More and more people use digital and internet technologies to plan vacations and business trips. It makes their lives easier, so these trends will continue to grow in popularity.

Digital changes

Traditional tourist attractions, sightseeing, for example, are transforming as well. Tourism becomes digital. Adobe Digital Insights (ADI) analyzed 321 million social engagements and found out 8 out of the 10 largest hotels have tested some VR experience.

Developers paired VR devices with consumers’ mobile devices. Virtual entertainment is becoming the most critical part of the program. Moreover, the number of hotels that offer some AR/VR-related experiences have increased by 13% last year.

For example, customers scan a map, chose a place of interest and join an online tour there via VR.

Gamification elements make it possible for the tourists to make a location part of a famous game. Furthermore, these technologies help to improve service quality.

Hilton Hotels Garden Inns implemented a game into employees’ training. They used AR to simulate routine situations to test how employees interact with customers.

They then received ratings based on the game’s results as well as customer reviews. It helped to improve service quality, which was also rated by guests.
