First Ever Hotel For Coronavirus Patients Opens In Europe

Hotels are adapting to the new reality. This statement is reinforced by the fact that in Prague, the first ever hotel focused on hosting coronavirus patients only has opened its doors.

Hotel staff is nowhere to be seen: rooms are booked online or via the telephone, the check-in counter is just a bunch of monitors, and the keys to the rooms are already in their respective locks. Food and medicine is also delivered to the rooms.

There are just 55 rooms in the hotel, and it only admits confirmed cases. Currently some of the rooms are occupied by workers of local businesses that sent them to stay.

Digitalization Is The New Era In Hospitality!

Originally, our project was created to help hotels all over the world to be more effective.

Today, the ideas we have always been advancing are becoming more resonant with the global audience! The hospitality industry is steadily moving towards digitalization! Hotel owners and managers are updating the very model of a hotel that we are all familiar with, by implementing automation into its everyday systems.

There is almost no staff in an automated hotel. Perhaps, one or two managers, depending on the size of the venue. They are monitoring the hotel during work hours and coordinating its systems.

Hotel owners get very important advantages:

Expense saving on staff that would normally constitute some 30-40% of all costs. It directly affects the hotel’s revenue.

Operational expense saving — motion sensors control lighting and heating, therefore cutting energy costs. Automated hotels often rely on clean energy sources.

Hygiene protocols — this one is especially relevant during the pandemic and other possible epidemics. Automated hotels make it so that guests have almost no contact with the staff, driving down the risk of infection dramatically.

You can use artificial intelligence services, such as advertising programs or chat-bots. It will remind the guests to order food and drinks from the bar or restaurant, schedule room service, or order other services during their stay.

These services also allow tracking your guests’ history of stay, their preferences and habits. This will help you convert guests into regular clients because the hotel always knows what they want. The benefit for the hotel is obvious — higher revenue.

Digitalization is the new era in the hospitality industry!

Clients Are Ready To Travel, Provided Hotels Meet Certain Criteria

70% of hotels have already implemented or are planning to implement contactless technologies, while 70% of customers prefer hotels centered around self-service. Another important thing is that very few decide to travel without proper insurance.

As Oracle and Skift research has shown, after a long period of isolation people are ready to travel against all odds.

However, travelers now have strict demands to hotels when it comes to cleaning and technological features. As a result, 70% of hotels have implemented or are planning to implement contactless check-in and check-out, food delivery, room service, etc. 90% of hotels clean and disinfect more often, while 89% train their personnel the relevant skills for a safer way of providing services.

“As the hospitality industry turns a corner on the road to recovery, technology will be critical to protecting travelers and workers alike,” says Alex Alt, senior VP and general manager at Oracle Hospitality. He also noted that safety rightly remains consumers' top priority when they consider traveling, and said “hospitality industry is doubling down on technology to facilitate social distancing and reduce face to face interaction for guests' protection”.

Why Hotels Are Getting Smarter

One of the leading tech trends to help hotels improve their return on investment is the Internet of Things, experts say.

Room automation helps create a more comfortable environment in hotel rooms. This is especially relevant to seasoned travellers who already use smart home systems.

The Internet of Things has opened up new avenues for home automation. Anyone can buy a smart thermostat, smart lock or a dimmable light bulb, etc.

As a result, consumers begin to demand the same level of technological infrastructure from hotels.

Connecting such facilities as minibars, locks, kitchen appliances, water faucets to IoT will allow the hotel to gather data and ensure data exchange between devices, systems and parties concerned.

For example, a thermostat can measure room temperature, and turn on the A/C if it gets too low or high. Automated thermostats will also notify the administrator of any malfunctions or even call in a repair technician. You can open a room with your smartphone and never even touch the surface of the check-in counter where you would typically get the key to your room. This way, the hotel infrastructure becomes way more efficient, saving on public utility.

In these trying times, brushing off new technologies is a luxury; implementing them is a must.

At ModiHost, we aim to help hoteliers minimize costs, identify the strengths and weaknesses of their business, as well as make it more profitable and customer-focused. It is the AI our platform is based upon that can help hotels gather all the crucial data points about the business as well as utilize information about their guests in the most efficient manner!

Role Of Tech In Safe And Quality Service

Over 4600 clients and 1800 hotel owners participated in a global study titled «A Data-Driven Look at Hospitality’s Recovery». The research surveys opinions regarding the hospitality industry.

Contactless technologies.

Over 70% of executives claim to have switched or are planning to switch to contactless payments and digital information services, while 60% use or are planning to use smartphone-activated keys. Customers support these changes: contactless payments (35%), digital keys (26%) and digital information services (20%) are the top three requests about service in the current situation.

Self-service for check-in

Over 70% of executives agree or strongly agree that self-service technologies will play an essential role in guest service, thanks to the reduction in unnecessary contacts. Two thirds (67%) claim they are using or planning to use self-service check-in solutions. Roughly the same share of clients (70%) say they would much rather prefer a hotel where such services are available; 23% of them add that self-service check-in kiosks matter in determining the quality of their stay.

Wide range of services for reducing interactions

Over 60% of executives say they have expanded or are planning to extend room service capabilities. One-fifth of clients say extended room service is among the critical safety factors that help by reducing the need for visiting public spaces, for example, restaurants.

When Will International Tourism Recover?

Summarizing 2020, international tourism dropped 70%, and the optimistic recovery scenario says it will spring back up no sooner than Q3 2021, according to the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). “UNWTO’s Panel of Experts foresees a rebound in international tourism mostly in the third quarter of 2021, however, around 20% of experts suggested the rebound could occur only in 2022”, says the report. There are a number of obstacles the industry is facing on the way to the recovery of international tourism, along with slow virus containment, the lack of coordinated response among countries to ensure coordinated restrictions, as well as the deteriorating economic environment.

“The drop until August represented 700 million fewer arrivals compared to the same period in 2019 and translated into a loss of $730bn in export revenues from international tourism. This was more than eight times the loss experienced on the back of the 2009 global economic and financial crisis”, the report points out.

According to the UNWTO, international arrivals plunged 81% in July and 79% in August, traditionally the two busiest months of the year.

All world regions recorded large declines: Asia and the Pacific, the first region to suffer from the impact of COVID-19, saw a 79% decrease in arrivals, followed by Africa and the Middle East (both - 69%), Europe (-68%) and the Americas (-65%).

“Following its gradual reopening of international borders, Europe recorded comparatively smaller declines in July and August (-72% and -69%, respectively). The recovery was short-lived however, as travel restrictions and advisories were reintroduced amid an increase in contagions”, says UNWTO.

On the other side of the spectrum, Asia and the Pacific recorded the largest declines with -96% in both months, reflecting the closure of borders in China and other major destinations in the region.

The organisation concludes its report by saying “Demand for travel remains largely subdued due to the ongoing uncertainty about the pandemic and low confidence. Based on the latest trends, UNWTO expected an overall drop close to 70% for the whole of 2020”.

Interesting Facts Ahead!

Surviving the crisis: a Japanese temple entered the hotel business to remedy its financial situation.

An ancient Jokyoji temple in a medieval capital of Japan, Kyoto, partnered with Mitsui Garden hotels, establishing a Mitsui Garden Kyoto Kawaramachi Jokyoji hotel, to remedy the financial situation the temple finds itself in, says The Asahi Shimbun newspaper.

Built during the Heian period (794-1185), this weather-beaten temple reopened its doors in September as part of a hotel holding.

It has been getting harder for Buddhist temples in Japan to maintain their decaying real estate, this Jokyoji temple hopes to set an example of how temples can survive in the urban environment.

Rebuilding the temple helped save some of its ancient design and history that would be otherwise lost completely. Its main hall, built some 200 years ago, instead of undergoing regular renovation, it was combined with a residential compound, making it a nine-story 6900 square meter hotel.

How COVID-19 Affected European Hotel Business

Tourism has been one of the worst devastated industries by the COVID-19 pandemic. How do European hotels manage to survive during this event? Let’s find out!

In most European countries (Spain, Italy, etc.), authorities had given direct orders to close down hotels for the lockdown period. Germany didn’t issue such edicts, however, according to STR’s European Hotel Performance Update, hotel occupancy dropped to its minimum of 4-5% naturally: cancelled business trips, events, suspended air travel. People stopped travelling, and the hotel business was thrown into disarray.

The reopening of European borders set the industry on a course to recovery, albeit a slow one. In general, the hotel industry in Europe (current occupancy levels around 40%) is recovering slower compared to the US or China (occupancy just under 50%).

According to McKinsey, in early May, US luxury hotels occupancy was at 15%, while economy class hovered around 40%. Hotel stock prices dropped 60% since January 1, thousands of hotels have closed down for good — and McKinsey experts believe the market will recover no earlier than 2023. Whether or not this forecast works, time will tell.

HOTELS AGAINST THE PANDEMIC: THE EUROPEAN WAY

Tourism has borne the brunt of the pandemic, and with it, suffered the hotel industry. Strangely enough, luxury hotels ended up in a more favourable spot than the rest of the market, but it can be explained with how the social distancing guidelines and hygiene standards had already been an inherent part of their service.

Here is what luxury hotel managers have to say about occupancy rates.

Philippe Perd, general manager of Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc: «We opened our doors July the 1st and achieved 70% occupancy. In August – 76%. Normally, 50% of our guests come from the US, this year it’s 8%. Russian guests usually constitute 9%, this year – 1%. 12% usually come from the UK, in 2020 this figure jumped to 25%. From France – 7-8%, but this season it’s 20%. Normally, from June to mid-September, 75% of our guests are regular customers. This year it’s only 20%. It was bizarre for me and my colleagues to not see familiar faces. Our staff had to find out the preferences and habits of our new guests. It’s a whole different mosaic of clients. We didn’t expect there would be so many people”.

«The market has adapted to the lockdown measures”, says Ivan Artolli of Hôtel de Paris in Monte-Carlo. “The number of our clients from the US dropped 59%, from Russia — 62%.
Faraway countries such as Japan and Mexico — a drop of 95%. However, the share of Italian guests has increased by 60%, Swiss by 65%, Benelux and Netherlands — 88%, France by a whopping 170%. We also believe it to be important that we didn’t just lower our rates, which means we kept our client demographic the same, even though 50% of guests were first-timers. The share of families with children has also increased”.

“We didn’t rush to open the hotel as soon as the authorities lifted the restrictions, since there were very little tourists from other countries, so we decided to wait 2 months to assess the situation”, says managing director of The Lanesborough Hotel in London, Marco Novella. “In September we opened just our restaurant. The people who live nearby started coming in.
Everyone has adapted to the new life under the pandemic rules and aren’t afraid of going to public places to dine, however, their wanderlust is still not as strong as it used to be. However, generally speaking, it seems like the situation is under control, because our regular customers started coming back. We didn’t hope to see them so early, but late September to early October a number of VIPs asked to book them a few rooms, and we reopened our hotel for them — and we stayed open”.

As you can see, the luxury hotel segment managed to adapt to the new rules of the pandemic, and clients were happy to come back to their favourite hotels!

Finland Prepares To Open

The Finnish government is preparing legislation aimed to support the country’s hospitality industry without undermining its citizens’ safety.

The authorities are exploring the idea of creating so-called travel bubbles. The idea is to conduct COVID-19 tests in airports and keep the tourists within their groups, isolated from contacts with the rest of the people.

Finland has previously had the most meticulous epidemiological assessment procedure of all European countries.

That being said, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Finland boasts the lowest COVID-19 infection rates of all the EU.

Late October, Finland’s tourism sector representatives reported over 60% of Christmas bookings had been cancelled by tourists. To attract guests, hotels started reducing prices, which means this year, spending vacation in Finland will be much easier on your budget.

How Tourists Plan To Navigate Current Situation

Tourist attitudes are changing, and today, few plan to travel the same way they used to, even after the lockdown measures are lifted.

Over 80% of tourists are no longer inclined to travel as often as they used to in the previous years. This is according to a poll by Inmarsat Aviation. Over 10 thousand people from 12 countries were polled.

31% of respondents intend to reduce their air travel, while 41% said they will cut down their use of all transportation.

These attitudes are most prevalent in Asia: 58% of Indians and 55% of South Koreans don’t plan to be active in terms of travel.

Naturally, if these would-be customers continue to stick to this viewpoint, the tourism industry will continue to suffer across the world.

This makes it all the more important to develop domestic tourism. It’s not at all clear when the restrictions will be relaxed.
